Eli Manning, Giants torch Rams

Eli ManningEli Manning was 20 of 29 passing for three touchdowns as the New York Giants romped the St. Louis Rams 41-13 on Sunday.

• Giants are 2-0 for the first time since 2005 (they started 0-2 last season).
• Rams managed only 201 yards of total offense with Marc Bulger passing for 177 and a TD.
• Giants have won four straight in the series with St. Louis.

Anyone (me) who thought he Giants would take a step back this year after losing Michael Strahan, Jeremy Shockey, Gibril Wilson and Osi Umenyiora was dead wrong. Manning looks fantastic, Brandon Jacobs (93 yards rushing) is a beast and the defense has shown no ill effects of losing their top two defensive ends. And with Cincinnati and Seattle coming up the next two weeks, the G-Men could easily be 4-0 heading into their bye week.

The Chiefs and Dolphins deserve mention, but the Rams might be the worst team in the NFL. Getting Marc Bulger and Orlando Pace back in the offense should have helped them this year, but so far they haven’t meant much. But hey, at least rookie Chris Long recorded his first career sack.

Peterson runs wild, but Manning rallies Colts over Vikings

Peyton ManningAdrian Peterson rushed for 160 yards on 29 carries, but Peyton Manning rallied the Indianapolis Colts to an 18-15 win over the Minnesota Vikings at the Metrodome on Sunday.

The Colts put the Manning touch on another impressive rally, thanks to a handful of clutch completions near the end by their stalwart quarterback, and reminded the Vikings it’s just not possible to win without throwing the ball.

Manning passed for 311 yards and moved Adam Vinatieri in position for the winning field goal with 3 seconds left, leading Indianapolis to an 18-15 victory on Sunday after Minnesota led 15-0 late in the third quarter.

The Colts were lucky to pull this victory out. They have to do something about their run defense because they can’t continue to get shredded for 180 yards a game and win. I know Manning threw for 311 yards and a touchdown, but he still looks out of rhythm and he was picked off twice.

The Vikings had this game won, but the secondary let them down once again (very reminiscent of last season). People want to hang all of the Vikings’ success this year on QB Tarvaris Jackson, but he was efficient today. He didn’t torch the Colts by any means, but he didn’t have to with Peterson rushing for 160 yards. So far Jared Allen hasn’t made the impact that many expected him to make when Minnesota acquired him this offseason. So far, Allen hasn’t even recorded a tackle.

Bears can’t hang on, Panthers rally for second straight week

Jake DelhommeThe Carolina Panthers are getting pretty good at this comeback thing. For the second straight week, the Panthers rallied for a win, this time mounting a fourth quarter comeback to beat the Chicago Bears 20-17.

• The Panthers started the season 2-0 for the first time since 2003 but won those two games by a combined five points.
• The Bears gained 151 yards on their first two drives with eight first downs, scoring once and fumbling once. They then gained 105 yards on their final 11 drives of the game, with just four first downs.
• Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart scored his first two NFL touchdowns, both in the second half. He finished with 77 yards on 14 carries, good for 5.5 yards per carry.

Greg Olsen fumbled twice, the second one leading to a Panthers’ touchdown to cut the Bears’ lead to 17-13. While rookie Matt Forte (92 yards rushing) was once again effective on the ground, Chicago QB Kyle Orton missed open receivers all second half. A couple throws could have led to big gains, if not touchdowns.

What a difference Jake Delhomme makes for the Panthers’ offense. There’s nothing that stands out about this Carolina team, but the way they’ve won the past two weeks have been impressive. In their two wins, the Panthers didn’t panic and made big plays in crunch time. They’re schedule over the next three weeks is very favorable (at Vikings, vs. Falcons, vs. Chiefs), so the Panthers might continue to roll.

Jaguars, Bills heading in different directions

Trent EdwardsAfter rallying to beat the Jaguars 20-16 on Sunday, the Buffalo Bills have started the 2008 season 2-0, while Jacksonville, who was supposed to contend for the Super Bowl this season, dropped to 0-2 on the year.

• Edwards became the first Bills QB to complete 80 percent of his passes in a game (min. 25 attempts) since Doug Flutie completed 20 of 25 passes at Seattle on Dec. 23, 2000.
• The Jaguars are 0-2 for the first time since 2003 when they began the season with four straight losses en route to a 5-11 season.
• Jacksonville was 2-11 on third-down conversions.
• David Garrard threw his third interception of the season, equaling his total from 2007.

Entering the season, many figured that Buffalo’s defense was good enough to keep the team competitive, but that their overall success would hinder on whether or not Trent Edwards could continue to develop as a passer. Thus far, Edwards has been outstanding and if he continues to play as well as he has, the Bills are serious contenders in the AFC. It’s still early, but Buffalo has just beaten two potential playoff teams in back to back weeks.

It’s no secret why the Jags are struggling this year; not only can they not run the ball as effectively as they did last season, but Garrard is turning the ball over as well. I don’t think it’s time to hit the panic button yet, but with Indianapolis and Pittsburgh coming up in the next three weeks, Jacksonville better figure things out offensively or things could get worse before they get better.

Bengals offense mush for second straight week

Carson PalmerThe Tennessee Titans went to 2-0 on the season after ruining the Bengals’ home opener, defeating Cincinnati 24-7.

• Tennessee is 2-0 for the first time since 1999, its first season with the Titans nickname. It went 13-3 that year and advanced to the Super Bowl.
• Rookie Chris Johnson of the Titans had his first 100-yard game, going for 109 yards on 19 carries.
• Carson Palmer struggled for the second straight week, throwing for 134 yards with two interceptions. He has yet to throw a TD pass this season.

It’s early, but Johnson is a serious Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate. He runs hard between the tackles and obviously has a ton of speed once he gets into the open field. And although his overall numbers weren’t dazzling, Kerry Collins (14 for 21, 128 yards, 1 TD) was efficient in the passing game and didn’t make mistakes. (Unlike Vince Young, who often struggles in the passing game and doesn’t secure the ball well enough.)

It’s amazing to watch the demise of Cincinnati’s offense. Baltimore and Tennessee have outstanding defenses, but Palmer looks brutal. And although he scored a touchdown, Chris Perry struggled for the second straight week, fumbling twice. I said it last week and I’ll say it again, Rudi Johnson was the backbone of the Bengals’ offense when they made the playoffs a few years ago.
