2010 NFL Week 10 Picks

While my college picks continue to be great fade material, my NFL selections have improved over the past couple of weeks.

After going 3-1 in Week 8, I followed up that performance with another 3-1 Sunday in Week 9. The Saints, Bucs and Chargers all hit, while my lone loss could have been avoided if the Chiefs would have knocked down one errant Jason Campbell pass in the closing seconds against the Raiders.

No complaints though – let’s aim for another winning week.

Jets (6-2) @ Browns (3-5), 1:00PM ET
The Browns are on a nice little tear of late. They beat the Saints in New Orleans three Sundays ago and then following their bye, they completely manhandled the Patriots in Week 9. The Jets, on the other hand, came out of their bye and were shutout by the Packers at home in Week 8 and then needed a miracle finish in Detroit to beat the Lions last Sunday. Smart money is on a hot Cleveland team getting points at home, but the problem is that I’m not that smart. Colt McCoy has held his own against the likes of Pittsburgh, New Orleans and New England, but eventually the first year starter will play like a rookie – it’s only inevitable. And what better time for him to play like a rookie then against Rex Ryan’s complex defense? I look for the Jets to get back on track this weekend while the Browns fall slightly back to earth.
THE PICK: JETS –3

Panthers (1-7) @ Bucs (5-3), 1:00PM ET
I generally don’t pick the total in these predictions, but I can’t help myself here. The Panthers are starting rookie Jimmy Clausen again following the season-ending injury to Matt Moore and there’s a very good chance neither DeAngelo Williams nor Jonathan Stewart will play. That leaves our fantasy guru John Paulsen as the Panthers’ only running back and therefore, I like the chances of a low-scoring game this weekend in Tampa. It’s hard not to like the Bucs in this contest, although division games tend to be close so I’m sticking with my gut. Final score, Bucs 9-3.
THE PICK: UNDER 37

Rams (4-4) @ 49ers (2-6), 4:15PM ET
I know the Niners are playing with a renewed sense of confidence, are coming off a bye and are facing a team that has yet to win on the road yet this season. But six points? The Niners are laying six points this week? Maybe I’m falling into a trap here, but I’m going with the better team getting nearly a touchdown. St. Louis hung with Tampa a couple of weeks ago on the road and quite frankly, could have easily won the game outright. San Francisco puts together some of the worst game plans in the league so chances are this will be a close game throughout. The Rams have battled each and every week and have a shot to claim sole possession in the NFC West with a win and a Seattle loss. I’m going with Sam the Ram.
THE PICK: RAMS +6

Texans (4-4) @ Jaguars (4-4), 1:00PM ET
This is my upset pick that isn’t really an upset because I’m picking the favorite…upset. Huh? I don’t care what their record is – the Texans should win this game. The Jaguars beat a horrendous Dallas team two weeks ago, but looked like utter crapola against Tennessee at home in Week 7. That said, the line doesn’t make much sense here and I’m surprised that Houston isn’t a one or 2-point favorite, even though they’re on the road. That’s why I like Jacksonville – because it makes little sense. Argue with that reasoning – I dare you.
THE PICK: JAGUARS -1

Season Record: 16-15-1

Injuries create fantasy opportunities

In this, the last week of byes, there are a few situations that have created opportunity for (somewhat desperate) fantasy owners to pluck a player off the waiver wire and immediately insert them in their starting lineups:

1. Steve Smith 2.0 is out. Mario Manningham is a top 20 play this week. Manningham is available in about 40% of ESPN leagues, so he’s not widely available. But if he’s out there, he’s a pretty solid WR2/flex option with Smith 2.0 sidelined in a great matchup with a very suspect Cowboys’ pass defense. If Manningham is on your bench, consider starting him this week. I have him ranked #19.

2. Owen Daniels is ruled out. Joel Dreessen looks like a sneaky good play. Last week, with Daniels sidelined, Dreessen caught five passes for 67 yards and was the most-targeted Texan receiver (8). He has caught two TDs on the year and has a terrific matchup with Jacksonville, who is among the worst at giving up points to opposing TEs. I have him ranked #14 this week.

3. DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart are out. Mike Goodson gets the start. Tyrell Sutton is out as well, so Goodson has no competition for carries this week. The Bucs are 30th against the run, so there is some opportunity for Goodson to rack up some yards on the ground. He is also dangerous as a pass catcher, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he gained 120+ yards from scrimmage. I have him ranked #26 this week, so he’s a fringe RB2/flex play.

2010 College Football Week 11 Picks

It’s probably safe to put a bullet in me and take me out to pasture at this point. These past couple of weeks have been brutal and the only good thing is that I’m perfect fade material right now.

I followed up my first 0-4 week with a 1-3 Saturday in Week 10. Utah, Alabama and Hawaii were all losers, while North Carolina was my one crowning achievement.

Maybe I should pick some obscure games to get my record up and stay away from top 25 action. How does everyone feel about the Little Sisters of the Poor-Boy Scouts of America game this week? Smart money has to be on the Little Sisters, I would think…

Here goes my best for Week 11. Whatever.

No. 14 Utah @ Notre Dame, 2:30PM ET
I know I’m going to piss off Irish fans when I write this but I couldn’t care less. Look at my season record: I’m doing you a favor, Notre Dame fan. I think Utah only having to give up five points (even though the game is in South Bend) is a freaking gift. Freshman Tommy Rees had one hell of a game against Tulsa too weeks ago when Dayne Crist suffered a season-ending knee injury, but it’s not him I’d be worried about. Notre Dame is ranked 77th in total defense, 62nd in scoring defense and 79th against the run. Those numbers are a little worrisome with the ninth best scoring offense coming to town and an offense averaging 175.89 yards per game on the ground. Not too mention this will be one pissed off Utes team that the Irish will face this weekend.
THE PICK: UTAH –5

Georgia @ No. 2 Auburn, 3:30PM ET
I don’t think there’s any doubt that Cam Newton will play, but will his mind be right following the allegations that have come out in the last one about his recruitment at Auburn? This isn’t Brett Favre we’re talking about – it’s a young kid trying to win a national championship and a Heisman Trophy. He’s a tremendous player but you don’t know how a young man will react in the midst of a media scandal. Georgia got off to a horrendous start this year but they’ve one four of their last five games and their only loss came in overtime against Florida two weeks ago. In their past five games, the Dawgs have averaged over 41 points per contest and this isn’t the 2000 Baltimore Ravens they’ll be facing on Sunday. The tigers are 55th in scoring defense and 69th against the pass. I’m taking the points with Georgia.
THE PICK: GEORGIA +7.5

No. 23 South Carolina @ No. 22 Florida, 7:15PM ET
You get the sense that the Gamecocks have begun their annual nosedive. In 2002 they lost five straight to end the season. In ’03 it was four straight. In ’04 it was three of their last four. In ’07 they lost five straight. In ’08 they lost four of their last six and last year they dropped five of their last seven. SC was crushed by Arkansas 41-20 at home alt Saturday and now have to travel to Gainesville to take on a Florida team that has won two straight by a combined score of 89-45. Granted, they also played Vanderbilt last week but it looks like the Gators are starting to figure things out offensively. I don’t like the Gamecocks’ odds in “The Swap” this Saturday.
THE PICK: FLORIDA –6.5

No. 10 Oklahoma State @ Texas, 8:00PM ET
Call this one a gut feeling. A hunch. The touch and feel of cotton. Texas wins this game outright. OK State definitely has the better team, more to play for and most importantly, more to lose. The Longhorns are fighting for a bowl berth but their season is essentially done. They haven’t played well this year, they’ve lost three in a row and they were beaten by the likes of Iowa State and Baylor at home. But the pressure is off. They can let it all hung out and just play the game, which is why I think an upset is in the making – especially on primetime. Just for safety precautions though, I’m gonna go ahead and take the points anyway. Better to have them and not need them than need them and not have them.
THE PICK: TEXAS +5

Season Record: 14-18 (Don’t laugh – it’s not funny. All of this is so not funny.)

Watch the Pacers hit 20 straight shots [video]

I don’t know if this says more about the Pacers’ ability to shoot the ball or the Nuggets’ inability to defend, probably a combination of the two. Indiana started the third quarter with a 10-point lead. Watch how the lead grows as the Pacers get hot from the field.

Indiana scored 54 points in the third quarter and won the game 144-113. If you’re wondering, the Pacers had just one turnover in the period (a bad pass by Darren Collison) and Josh McRoberts missed the final shot of the quarter (a 26-foot 3PT attempt).

The Pacers are better than I thought they’d be. They have an up-and-coming point guard (Collison) and big man (Roy Hibbert) to go along with their All-Star wing (Danny Granger). And if Mike Dunleavy is going to shoot the ball like this, Indiana will be tough to beat.

Rajon Rondo with big-time dunk on Chris Bosh [video]

Paging Mr. Bosh….come in, Mr. Bosh…

The Celtics went into Miami and beat the Heat, 112-107. Ray Allen scored 35 points, hitting 7-of-9 from 3PT, while Rondo had eight points and 16 assists. LeBron James had a near triple-double (35-10-9), but Dwyane Wade stunk up the joint (2-of-12 from the field, eight points).

The C’s are now 2-0 against the Heat this season.
