The upsets continue: #2 South Florida falls

Last year, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights were the feel-good story of the college football season. This year, not so much, but they did pull off one of the better upsets of the season when they defeated #2 South Florida 30-27 Thursday night.

It happens every season. One or two Big East teams sneak up the polls, and then suffers a humiliating upset and order is restored in college football land (well, sort of). Last year, Louisville upset #3 West Virginia. Then Rutgers topped #3 Louisville. Then unranked Cincinnati beat #7 Rutgers. All of these Big East schools have similar talent levels and all it takes sometimes is a trick play, a blocked kick and one big-time playmaker (i.e. Ray Rice, who by the way, I can’t wait to see play on Sundays).

Regardless, South Florida had a hell of a run. It’s quite remarkable that a team that wasn’t even ranked in the preseason polls took only seven weeks to climb into the #2 spot. The Bulls have a hell of a team and true gamer in QB Matt Grothe. He does everything possible to win and leaves it on the field every week. It was a long shot that USF would compete for a national title all season, but it was a fun ride while it lasted.

Worst mascots

Dayn Perry of FOXSports.com recently ranked the 10 worst college football mascots for his blog, “$8 Beers”. It’s worth checking out just to see some of the ridiculous ideas schools had for mascots, and Dayn provides some pretty funny commentary.

The best commentary has to follow #2 Colonel Reb, the mascot for Ole’ Miss. Following a picture of “Reb” holding an Ole’ Miss flag with confederate colors, Dayn writes:

This one actually hasn’t been in sanctioned use since 2003, but it’s so bad that it deserves fresh ridicule. Yeah, it doesn’t exactly chill the bones to see a racist dotard who lost the only war he ever fought in staring back at you. Besides, extra wuss points for having fey little frat boys rally to your defense.

Personally I think that Stanford tree is the worst freaking mascot. Wow, a tree with huge red lips – scary. Although hey, I guess it scared at least one opponent this year, right USC?

SNL: Notre Dame/NBC Parody

In keeping with the previous spoof on Notre Dame’s poor season, here is a parody of a NBC/Notre Dame promo from the last episode of “Saturday Night Live.”

Pretty hilarious stuff. Weird seeing all those missed plays.

I always thought it was strange that NBC would marry a single college team like that. Talk about putting all your eggs in one basket…
