Despite saying he would make a decision today, Terrelle Pryor, the nation’s top high school football recruit, has decided not to make a commitment to any collegiate on National Signing Day.

National Signing Day is the first day high school players can formally sign paperwork and declare their intent to enroll at a specific college, but players actually have until April 1 to make a final decision. And after not being able to come to a final decision between his top four schools, Pryor has opted to continue considering his options.

Pryor’s decision should not come as a major shock to anyone who has been following his recruitment. In the days leading up to signing day, conflicting reports surfaced regarding his final intention. Some, like the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, wrote that he was “80 to 90 percent” sure he would.

So Buckeye, Wolverine and Nittany Lion fans will have to wait. I applaud the kid for taking his time. This is a major decision and if he needs more time, than more time is what he should take.

The nation’s top high school recruit, Terrelle Pryor, is expected to announce which college he plans to attend on Wednesday. He has apparently cut his choices down to three: Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State.

That leaves Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State, according to Pryor. His quarterbacks coach, Roy Hall, told the Plain Dealer last week that he had a gut feeling that Pryor would wind up at Ohio State.

If Ohio State gets Pryor that would be a tremendous blow to Michigan, who hired former West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez to install the spread offense. Rich Rod’s spread offense won’t look too good without a spread-offense quarterback. And Chad Henne’s backup, Ryan Mallett, transferred to Arkansas so Wolverine fans better hope Pryor bleeds Maze n’ Blue.

One YouTube viewer has already bought into the rumor that Pryor is heading to “Buckeye City”:

ESPN.com’s Gene Wojciechowski did a mock conversation between new Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino and a recruit’s dad. It’s hilarious if you know anything about Petrino and his decorative past.

Petrino: “Before we start, can I just say one thing from the bottom of my heart? This is by far the best Chex Mix I’ve ever had in my life. My wife Becky will kill me if I leave here without the recipe.”

Recruit’s dad: “Recipe? You open the bag and pour it into a bowl.”

“Hold on — I’m writing this down. Into … a … bowl. Well, I can certainly see where your son gets his smarts.”
“Yes, about my son …”
“Best recruit I’ve ever seen. He could be a legend in Little Rock.”
“You mean Fayetteville.”
“Fayetteville … Little Rock. I keep getting those two mixed up. Memo to me: buy map of state.”
“You’ve never actually seen my son play in person, have you?”
“Not exactly. But I have seen him on film and he’s absolutely the kind of student-athlete I want in, uh …”
“Fayetteville?”
“That’s the place. And while we’re discussing college campuses, do you mind me asking where your son has taken his official visits?”
“Well, so far he’s talked to Notre Dame, LSU, Florida, Mississippi and Auburn.”
“Weird — so did I. What I meant to say is, has he made any kind of verbal commitment?”
“Yes, to Auburn.”
“Weird — so did I. I mean, he’s only given them his word, right?”
“Isn’t that enough?”
“It’s been my experience that if you try hard enough, you can get out of anything, including your word.”

It seems that every morning another highly touted underclassman declares eligible for the NFL draft. Arkansas’ Darren McFadden, Rutgers’ Ray Rice, UCF’s Kevin Smith, WVU’s Steve Slaton and Vernon Gholston of Ohio State are just some of the more well-known prospects that have decided to forego their senior seasons and enter the NFL draft.

That must mean only one thing: Just like fans, college football players must be upset that there’s no playoff system, too. It’s the only explanation that I can come up with to explain why these kids aren’t staying in school for another year. It’s either that, or the fact that they’re about to get a butt load of money…no, no – it must be the fact that they’re pissed that there’s no playoff system.
