Missouri State on a Roll

Missouri State knocked off St. Louis for their third straight win of the year. After dropping their opener at Toledo the Bears have regrouped and won three in a row at home… It dropped St. Louis to 4-2 on the year. After watching St. Louis in practice I am continually amazed at how well the Bilikens have played with such a short bench…Right now Coach Majerus is only operating with a couple of bona fide Division one players on the roster…

On the flip side Barry Hinson has been able to overcome some early season suspensions to start building a resume for post season.

CHANGES WITH THE TERPS

Maryland Assistant Michael Adams has left the Terps staff for personal reasons. He will be replaced by former Colorado Head Coach Joe Harrington. Harrington is a Maryland alum who coached under Lefty Driesell. He should give the coaching staff some stability in a year that will take a lot of patience while the young Terps develop…

Cremins Does It Again

In one of them ost unbelievable comebacks in years, Bobby Cremins led his College of Charleston team back from a 50-25 halftime deficit to beat Temple 79-76. The comeback flew under the radar because it was played over in Puerto Rico…Leading one to seriously wonder if Coach Fran Dunphy can regain the glory years of Temple basketball… I certainly hope he does as he is one of the classiest guys in the business.

Thompson Returns (The other brother)

When Georgetown played Ball State this past week it was the return of the Thompson family to the campus of Ball State. After the tumultuous tenure of his brother Ronny, John Thompson II showed what a class act he is. Instead of trying to get out of the game, he played it and was a true professional in every sense of the word. One could understand his wanting to cancel the game after his brother resigned under a cloud of NCAA allegations and racial charges…. With that game in the rear view mirror I hope new Coach Billy Taylor can get the Cardinals back to the top of the MAC… Also, look for Georgetown to make another serious run at a national championship..

#10 Duke vs. #13 Marquette tonight

Sometimes it’s tough to keep up with the interesting matchups that develop out of these early season tournaments, but tonight’s Duke/Marquette game (10 PM ET on ESPN) at the Maui Invitational should be a treat. Both teams are ranked and have looked good thus far this season.

Duke is getting great play out of super sophomore Gerald Henderson, who has scored in double figures in each of the Blue Devils’ four games. The team is getting meaningful contributions from its trio of freshman – Kyle Singler, Taylor King and Nolan Smith – giving Duke a talented rotation that goes nine deep. Coach Krzyzewski has implemented some of the up tempo offense of the Phoenix Suns, so the Blue Devils are running more than ever.

Meanwhile, Marquette is led by juniors Dominic James and Jerel McNeal, who make up one of the best backcourt duos in the country. Marquette is also able to go nine deep, so this game might come down to who has the better bench.
