MMA is big now, but it continues to grow

Dana White during the press conference for the Ultimate Fighting Championship 109 event at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on February 4, 2010.

The UFC continues to grow in popularity on a global level and as far as Spencer Kyte of HeavyMMA.com is concerned, we haven’t seen anything yet.

Dana White has famously called mixed martial arts the “fastest growing sport in the world” on numerous occasions.

With the ever-increasing popularity of the UFC and the countless promotions cropping up across the globe hoping to emulate the biggest brand in the business, the boisterous UFC President could certainly be right.
What makes the assertion even more impressive is that in all reality, the sport is still in the infancy stage, and as it continues to grow outside of North America, mixed martial arts has the potential to become a truly global phenomenon that rivals soccer.

If you think I’m exaggerating, take a look at the number of British fighters competing this weekend at UFC 120.

Four of the five main card bouts feature a Brit, and the lone bout which doesn’t contain a British national involves Cheick Kongo, a French heavyweight who trains with one of England’s premier teams at Wolfslair Academy. On the preliminary portion of the event, four more Britons are competing, bringing the event total to eight.

Mac Danzig to take on Joe Stevenson for UFC 124

Nate Lawson of HeavyMMA.com is reporting that a lightweight bout between “Ultimate Fighter” winners Joe Stevenson and Mac Danzig will take place at UFC 124 this December.

Both Danzig and Stevenson have struggled as of late to live up to the expectations their success on the reality series earned them. They have gone a combined 9-9 since each won his respective season of “The Ultimate Fighter”.

Stevenson, however, has had the greater success of the two, even climbing the ranks years ago to earn a title shot. He followed his “Ultimate Fighter” with four wins to only one loss, but fell short to B.J. Penn when he fought him for the 155-pound title. In his last outing, Stevenson fell short to George Sotiropoulous at UFC 110 on the judges’ scorecards.

Like his upcoming opponent, Danzig has struggled immensely as of late, winning only once in his last five showings. He dropped three consecutive fights between September of 2008 and July of 2009, but snapped the downslide with a unanimous decision victory over Justin Buchholz at UFC 109. However, a controversial submission loss to Matt Wiman at UFC 115 derailed a potential winning streak.

The lightweight bout is set for UFC 124 on December 11 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The main event of the card features a welterweight title bout between champion Georges St. Pierre and top contender Josh Koscheck. The only other fights to be made official by the promotion are Matt Riddle vs. Anthony Waldburger and Mark Bocek vs. Dustin Hazellet.

Jake Shields to get title shot with victory over Kampmann?

Fighter Jake Shields attends the Strikeforce Fedor vs. Werdum fight in San Jose,CA on June 26, 2010.

From HeavyMMA.com:

Jake Shields hasn’t stepped in the Octagon one single time, but he’s already being spoken of as the next contender to Georges St. Pierre‘s welterweight throne.

Shields, who faces Martin Kampmann at UFC 121 next week, signed with the UFC this summer after leaving Strikeforce. He was the Strikeforce middleweight champion at the time, fresh off a win over former UFC star Dan Henderson.

UFC President Dana White confirmed that a Shields victory over Kampmann will likely earn him a shot at the winner of the St. Pierre vs. Josh Koscheck fight that takes place in December.

“If Jake Shields wins against Martin Kampmann, it’ll probably be him next,” White said at today’s UFC 124 press conference in Montreal.

Shields is in the midst of a 14-fight win streak, with victories over notable names such as Yushin Okami, Robbie Lawler, Jason Miller, Paul Daley, Carlos Condit and Henderson. He’s dropping to welterweight for his entrance into the UFC after ruling the Strikeforce middleweight class.

White originally promised a title shot to the winner of the Jon Fitch/Thiago Alves bout in August, but Fitch’s slow and plodding victory that night may have changed White’s mind. Shields will instead get the rare chance to jump right to the front of the competition and earn a UFC title shot in only his second bout for the promotion.
