Steelers ups and downs

The World Champion Pittsburgh Steelers received good news and bad news this weekend.

The good news, Big Ben Roethlisberger is looking even better this spring than last. The Pittsburgh coaching staff felt that Ben use to rely on physically ability and will to win in his first couple years. They feel the playoff experience has given Roethlisberger the confidence needed to excel even further as a leader on this Steeler squad. Pittsburgh’s not ready to become a throw first team, but they do believe Ben’s decision making and confidence will make it easier for the team to throw when the run is not successful.

The bad news, Santonio Holmes, the Steelers first round pick was arrested this weekend for disorderly conduct in South Beach. The Steeler organization has little tolerance for off the field problems. They released Plaxico Burress because of his attitude and continuing problems away from the gridiron. This won’t sit well with the Rooney family and I’m sure Holmes will feel the wrath of Bill Cowher.

Wallace tells Cavs to enjoy their last home game

The Cleveland Cavaliers have numerous reasons for wanting to win game four. A win would put pressure on the Pistons, a win would be sentimental for the Hughes family, and now an even better one, a win would prove Rasheed Wallace wrong.

After losing a close battle with LeBron James and the Cavs, Wallace proclaimed that Monday would be the last game this year in Cleveland for the Cavaliers. He proceeded to predict that the Pistons would “kick their butts” in game four. This type of prediction is exactly what Cleveland needed to keep their heads in the game. The pressure clearly has shifted to the Pistons after winning the first two games.

The Cavaliers need to show the same patience and determination as in game three and tie this series up. Detroit, still the decided favorite, would have to start second guessing themselves if this young and inexperienced Cleveland team won two in a row.

James better “all around” than Bryant

The comparison of LeBron James and Kobe Bryant continues to grow as the Cavaliers compete in the playoffs. LeBron is showing the world that a player can be an All-Star without being selfish and continue to keep the whole team involved in the game.

LeBron had a triple double in a critical playoff game against one of the best defensive teams in the NBA. James didn’t force the game, he waited until the openings came, then he attacked. The openings were either a shot or a perfect pass to a teammate for an easy lay-up. This type of team play is what is separating James and Bryant when it comes to comparing their contributions to their team.

Kobe Bryant and LeBron James are both great players, but team play is what wins championships. This is why the Cavaliers will be in the Finals before the Lakers.

New York, Isiah may be kissing Brown goodbye

The New York Knicks continue to embarrass the city and their organization. There are reports that New York owner James Dolan is going to buy out Larry Brown as their head coach for approximately 40 million dollars. He was upset with the way Brown would openly criticize the players and the terrible record this past year.

The rumor is that Isiah Thomas will become the new head coach to replace Brown. This is an amazing turn of events. Brown is a good coach and needs a chance to form his own team. The fact that Dolan would allow Thomas to coach the terrible team that he formed is exactly why the Knicks will be holding up the bottom of that division for quite some time. Isiah has never been a successful general manager or coach, but teams continue to give him an opportunity. The fact someone was a great player does not automatically make them a good coach.

NCAA Football becoming more like the NFL

The NCAA Football Rules committee is making a recommendation to implement the “challenge rule” to college football. The National Championship game had a number of controversial calls, but none quit as obvious as Vince Young’s knee hitting the ground before he pitched the ball to his teammate.

This rule would allow an NCAA coach to call a timeout during the course of a game to challenge a call. If the call was correct, the team would be charged a normal timeout and lose their challenge for the rest of the game. If the call was incorrect, the team would retain their timeout and ability to challenge a future call. This would open the possibility to unlimited challenges.

This is just another step at making college football similar to the NFL. I believe it’s the right decision for college football. There are too many critical games that finish with questionable or wrong calls.
