Browns’ Edwards returns to practice

Browns wideout Braylon Edwards practiced for the first time in training came on Wednesday, after missing six practices with an undisclosed injury.

From the Cleveland Plain Dealer:

Edwards had missed the first four days and six practices because of an undisclosed injury, believed to be on an ankle, that occurred off the field prior to the June minicamp.

Edwards reported to camp a day late and then failed to pass the team’s physical. By appearing on the field this morning, it means the club’s medical staff cleared Edwards to practice.

If you’re Edwards, you have to be concerned with the way your contract year has started off. As the article notes, he reported to training camp late after head coach Eric Mangini told him to be there a couple days earlier so that he could take a physical. Then of course he fails his physical, yet nobody knows what the injury was. (Some speculate that he hurt his ankle playing basketball, while others believe he faked the injury in some kind of unique holdout attempt.)

If Edwards wants someone to pay him like a No. 1 receiver (whether it’s the Browns or another team), then he better start making a better impression. (Catching the ball would help too.)

Fielder goes after Mota in clubhouse following Brewers-Dodgers game

ESPN.com is reporting that Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder tried attacking Dodgers pitcher Guillermo Mota in L.A.’s clubhouse before being stopped by security guards and teammates.

Mota drilled Fielder with two outs, apparently in retaliation for a pitch that hit Dodgers slugger Manny Ramirez in the seventh inning of Los Angeles’ highest-scoring home performance in 30 years. Home plate umpire Marvin Hudson immediately ejected Mota, who slowly left the field while Fielder voiced his anger.

When the game ended, Fielder charged through the underground tunnels at Dodger Stadium to the door of the home clubhouse, shouting obscenities with many fellow Brewers trailing behind. Several security guards and teammates Bill Hall and Casey McGehee prevented Fielder from entering the locker room in search of Mota.

Could you imagine Mota sitting at his locker in the Dodgers clubhouse and turning to a teammate saying, “Do you hear something?”

All of a sudden Prince Fielder busts through the doors screaming “Where the f**k is he? Where the f**k is he?!”

I’d be telling one of the members of the clubhouse staff to wear my jersey so I could sneak out the back door.

The rest of this series should be interesting. Milwaukee has played flat since the All-Star break and maybe this incident will fire them up. They’re still only five games back of the Cubs and Cardinals in the NL Central, so it’s not like they still can’t make a run. They certainly have enough hitting, but the pitching has been brutal.

Contract extension coming for Eli Manning?

According to a report by FOXSports.com, the Giants are close to signing Eli Manning to a six-year, $97.5 million contract extension.

The deal will make the 28-year-old the highest-paid player in the history of the Giants organization as well as the highest paid quarterback in NFL history, a figure Giants fans would probably not argue with.

I’ve always found it kind of humorous how NFL contacts work. Eli clearly isn’t the best quarterback in the league, yet he’ll be the highest paid signal caller in NFL history. It doesn’t make sense, yet that’s just how things have always worked in the NFL.

From the Giants perspective, they have to get a deal like this done. Eli is a franchise quarterback who has already won a Super Bowl, so he’s going to get paid. And at only 28, he still has plenty of years ahead of him.

The Giants are wise to get this done now.

Update: The Giants locked Eli up with a new seven-year, $106.9 million contract according to the New York Daily News. He’s now the eighth NFL player to reach $100 million.

Rogers: ‘I smoked pot every day in NFL.’

Charles Rogers admitted on ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” that he smoked marijuana every day during his three years in the NFL.

He’s a small clip of the segment (via the Detroit Free Press):

This is a classic example of a player who just wasn’t dedicated to developing his game in order to become great. Rogers had all the talent in the world, but he clearly wasn’t willing to work on his craft and excel. I’m not about to suggest that marijuana derailed his career because 1) I don’t have enough facts to make a generalized claim like that and 2) something tells me it was a collection of things that contributed to Rogers being a bust, including drugs, a poor work ethic and injuries.

I just hope he’s the minority and that there aren’t more players like Chuck Rogers, who smoke the hippie lettuce on a regular basis. I’d like to believe that more players are dedicated to the game than he was.

Packers not ruling out Vick?

FOX Sports.com is reporting that Ted Thompson isn’t ruling out potential interest in free agent quarterback Michael Vick, although the Packers’ GM isn’t saying that his team is interested in Vick either.

“We look at everything,” Thompson said.

Vick has been conditionally reinstated in the NFL after completing a 23-month federal sentence for running a dogfighting ring. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has said Vick can sign with a team and begin playing by week six of the NFL season.

While I wouldn’t put it pass Thompson to do something unpredictable (Justin Harrell at No. 16 in 2007, Ted? For realsies?), I don’t think he would sign Vick. Not only does Vick have character issues, he doesn’t really seem like a great addition to a team that already has Aaron Rodgers at quarterback and Ryan Grant at running back. Unless the Packers want Vick to serve as a backup for Rodgers (and why would they with Brian Brohm and Matt Flynn on the roster?), why take on his baggage just to try and see if he could play a position outside of quarterback?

Thompson is smarter than this and besides, he has always tried to take on players with high character issues, so it would reason that he would stay away from Vick.
