      Freeney misses practice, listed as questionable

      Injured Colts’ defensive end Dwight Freeney was hoping to test his injured ankle on Friday during practice, but it didn’t happen as he was unable to hit the field. He didn’t practice once during the last two weeks and is listed as questionable on the Colts’ injury report for Super Bowl XLIV.

      On Tuesday, Freeney told the media that the pain in his ankle was subsiding and that it felt better each day. Although he hasn’t practiced, it doesn’t mean that he won’t suit up on Super Bowl Sunday and he still has two more nights to treat the ankle so you never know how he’ll feel in two days.

      That said, I highly doubt that he’ll play in Indy’s base defense and will likely be limited throughout the game. The best case for him and the Colts is if he’s able to play in obvious passing situations and provide a decent rush on Drew Brees but even then, it’s doubtful that Freeney will be that effective given that he’s a speed rusher and his ankle won’t be 100%.

      As I’ve written all week, if Freeney is limited the Saints have a huge advantage because they can concentrate on slowing down Robert Mathis and won’t have to worry about keeping an extra blocker in. They can use their full complement of offensive weapons, which is dangerous considering how explosive their offense can be. Brees might have a field day on Sunday if the Colts can’t figure out a way to drum up some pressure without Freeney.

      USC lands top quarterback recruit…who happens to be 13.

      Lane Kiffin got a solid jump on the Class of 2015 when he got 13-year-old David Sills to commit to USC.

      Wait…what?

      From ESPN Los Angeles.com:

      “His skill set is off the chart,” Clarkson said. “I’ve never seen anyone at his age do what he’s been able to do.”

      Clarkson then directed Kiffin to a video of Sills that is making the rounds on YouTube.

      Kiffin watched it and called him back immediately.

      “He was like, ‘This kid is incredible. How old is he again?’

      “I was like, ‘That’s the problem, he’s 13.’ ”

      A couple of hours later, the Sills family called Kiffin and they spoke for the first time. USC had always been Sills’ dream school, according to his father, David Sills IV.

      “I’m as shocked as anybody,” Sills’ father said. “I was just talking with friends yesterday about what it’ll be like four years from now when David goes through the recruiting process. I never expected this to happen so soon.

      McCoy hopes to throw at scouting combine

      According to Adam Schefter via his Twitter page, Texas quarterback Colt McCoy says that the pinched nerve in his throwing shoulder is making progress and he hopes to throw at the NFL scouting combine in a couple of weeks.

      McCoy suffered the injury on Texas’s first possession against Alabama in the national championship game and he didn’t return. After visiting with the esteemed Dr. James Andrews, McCoy was given a two-week recovery period.

      But if he can’t throw at the combine (which takes place almost two months after he suffered the injury), then red flags about his health will certainly be raised. There was some talk that the type of injury he suffered was career threatening, but if he throws well at the combine, those doubts will obviously be erased.

      McCoy doesn’t have great arm strength as it is, but a good showing at the combine will keep his stock from plummeting as we get closer to April’s draft. Personally, I hope he’s healthy and has the opportunity to compete in the NFL because he showed during his four years at Texas that he’s got great character. The NFL could use more of those kinds of players.

      Is Manning better than Montana and Brady?

      Ross Tucker of SI.com writes that Peyton Manning is a better NFL quarterback than Joe Montana and Tom Brady.

      Here are the highlights of Tucker’s argument:

      Montana may have been the most clutch performer ever; his postseason success is almost unprecedented. He did, however, play in an era before the advent of free agency and the salary cap.

      He (Brady) did, however, have the benefit of playing for one of the greatest coaches and defensive minds, Bill Belichick. Belichick’s game planning against Manning earlier this decade was a primary factor in the Pats’ success. Brady has also been blessed by a defense that was among the league’s best for a good portion of his career.

      But Manning has also shown an ability to adjust, even after losing longtime running mate Marvin Harrison.

      His offensive line has never been dominant, and yet their weaknesses have been covered up by his uncanny ability to get rid of the ball before the defender gets to him.

      I can’t think of any other player who has as much control over the game plan or play-calling. That, of course, is fitting because I don’t think any other player has ever had quite the same grasp of his offense that Manning does.

      Tucker makes some valid points, especially in the case of Manning, who is incredible at what he does. But what he ignores is that quarterbacks will always be graded by their performances in the Super Bowl. The goal for every team at the start of the year is to win a Super Bowl, it’s not to try and rack up as many stats as possible.

      Dolphins to get into the mix for Boldin?

      Beat writer Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald fully expects the Dolphins to discuss trading for Cardinals’ wideout Anquan Boldin this offseason.

      He says not so much on Brandon Marshall, however:

      4. Brandon Marshall. The Denver wide receiver will be traded. And it will not be to the Dolphins. I’m thinking more likely it will be to a team like Chicago. That part is a guess. The trade of Marshall part of the equation? Book it.

      5. Anquan Boldin. This is a totally different situation than Marshall. The price tag has dropped on Boldin and the Cardinals will be looking to get something for him this offseason because he’s a free agent after 2010 and they’ve already identified a replacement for him in Early Doucet. The Dolphins like Boldin. He’s tough. He’s big. He is not a diva. Did he complain about his contract? Yes. He had a legitimate complaint. Does that make him a bad dude? Absolutely not. The Cards will probably ask a second-round pick for him. Somebody will offer a fourth. Depending on how high the selection, I’d say he could be had for a third rounder. Doesn’t mean the Dolphins will do it. But they will absolutely discuss it.

      As Salguero suggests, a Boldin-Miami marriage makes sense and I agree that a third rounder might be good enough to snag him from Arizona. Boldin wants to be the No. 1 guy (and be paid as such), and the Dolphins definitely have the need for a legit go-to receiver for Chad Henne next season.
