Well, at least the Lions didn’t pick a wide receiver. Detroit selected Florida State linebacker Ernie Sims over the likes of Matt Leinart, Brodrick Bunkley and Haloti Ngata. Sims has had injury concerns and disciplinary issues as well.
If I’m the Lions, why do I take the second rated linebacker in the draft, over the top rated defensive tackle (Bunkley)? Both were needs for D-Town.
The Buffalo Bills win the first ‘What the?’ for their selection of Ohio State safety Donte Whitner. ESPN’s 2006 draft guide had Whitner has the fourth rated safety behind Michael Huff, Darnell Bing and Ko Simpson.
What’s interesting here is how the Bills probably would have landed Whitner at No.14 or 15, where the Eagles and Broncos apparently wanted to trade up. If the trade rumors were true, Buffalo could have got more picks and still got their man.
It looks like Matt Leinart won’t be California dreaming as the Oakland Raiders selected Texas DB Michael Huff. Huff steps in a depleted Raiders secondary who ranked dead last in interceptions in 2006. It’s unknown whether or not Huff will play corner or safety at this point (he played both while at Texas), but either way the Raiders go a physical DB with great intelligence. Huff deserved a lot of the credit for his run stuffs against U.S.C in the Rose Bowl.
The Buffalo Bills are on the clock, but ESPN just reported that the Broncos and Eagles have just contacted the Bills for a possible trade. The Eagles are apparently interested in getting Brodrick Bunkley, while the Broncos are after Matt Leinart.
An emotional Vernon Davis was selected by the 49ers at No.6. Davis has wide receiver speed; he out benched D’Brickashaw Ferguson and his vertical leap was rivaled by no other prospect at the NFL combine. Davis steps right in among the new breed of tight ends with the likes of Antonio Gates and Tony Gonzalez. Let’s just hope for Davis that the 49ers know how to use him, because this guy has the potential to be great.
As Chris Berman commented, the Green Bay Packers have had a pretty decent week. Brett Favre will return for another season, they just signed Charles Woodson to beef up their secondary and they just selected Ohio State linebacker AJ Hawk in the first round. This guy is fast, strong and has excellent sideline-to-sideline speed.
