Giants to land Falcons’ Hall?

Despite winning the Super Bowl, the Giants aren’t ready to just rest on their laurels. According to the Newark Star-Ledger, the G-Men are seeking a trade with the Atlanta Falcons for cornerback DeAngelo Hall.

According to two people with knowledge of discussions between the teams, the Giants are willing to give Atlanta their first-round pick (31st overall) in April’s draft in exchange for Hall. The people requested anonymity because of the private nature of the trade talks.

Hall is arguably coming off his best season as a pro and paired with Aaron Ross, the Giants would dramatically upgrade their secondary. But Hall isn’t exactly a choirboy and is in a contract year, so if New York can’t sign him long term, is this still a wise investment? There’s no doubt he can play, but his attitude and contract status might be worth passing on.

As for the Falcons, it’s clear new GM Thomas Dimitrof and head coach Mike Smith want to rebuild from the ground up. They appear to want players who will fall in line and think team-first, which is an understandable with how things fell apart in the locker room last year. If they pull off the trade, Atlanta will have four picks in the first two rounds.

NFL Offseason Odds & Ends: 2/21

– The Browns re-signed Jamal Lewis to a three-year contact. It appears that GM Phil Savage is trying to keep the core of the team together seeing as how the Browns were knocking on the doorstep of a postseason berth last year.

– The Panthers cut running back DeShaun Foster. The team tried to shop him over the past few days, but apparently the market was light for a back that has a bloated salary and trouble staying on the field.

– The Patriots decided not to use their franchise tag on wide receiver Randy Moss. The Boston Globe speculates that Moss and the Pats have already reached an agreement on a multi-year deal, but nothing can be announced until February 29 when free agency officially starts.

– The Bears won’t use their franchise tag on receiver Bernard Berrian. He’s likely to test the market according to the Chicago Sun Times.

– Travis Henry restructured his contract and will remain a Bronco.

– The Seahawks have used their franchise tag on cornerback Marcus Trufant.

Sheffield threatens not to play nice with agent Boras

Outfielder Gary Sheffield showed up to Tigers’ spring training Thursday to do the usual. You know, some light jogging, stretching…ripping agent Scott Boras.

Sheffield and Boras have been in dispute for five years, since Sheffield fired Boras in 2003. Sheffield later negotiated his own contract with the New York Yankees, but Boras claimed he should get a portion of that deal because of the work he had done on Sheffield’s behalf. Sheffield had to miss four spring training games last year to deal with the case, and he said he is having to attend to it again this spring.

“It’s probably personal, but when it gets done it’s going to be personal with me,” Sheffield said.
Sheffield won’t mention Boras by name, but he left no doubt who he was talking about when he said this morning that he would tell other players to stay away from the super-agent.

“I’m going to warn everybody,” Sheffield said. “It’s going to be the ugliest thing you’ve ever seen. There’s certain people you don’t want to mess with — and I guarantee you I’m one of them.”

Sheffield later said that his dealings with Boras were “total hell,” and he twice referred to the agent as a “bad person.”

Them are fighting words.
