Every week, I highlight a few players to start and a few players to sit at each position. I’m a firm believer in starting your studs, so I won’t suggest you bench Drew Brees or Arian Foster because they have tough matchups – just go ahead and keep them in your lineup. Instead, I’ll focus on the borderline guys – players you’ll only start under the right circumstances.
As usual, I’ll discuss these players within the context of my weekly positional rankings, so remember — everything is relative.
Jon Kitna has played pretty well since taking over for Tony Romo, and this week he has a nice matchup with the Redskins, who have struggled mightily against the pass this season…Josh Freeman should continue to put up solid fantasy lines the rest of the way. This week he has the Lions, who did play well against Aaron Rodgers for a half last week. Still, this is a secondary that has given up 20+ to Jon Kitna, Donovan McNabb and Mark Sanchez in the last eight weeks, so Freeman should finish with good stats…Jason Campbell is probably available on your waiver wire (or was earlier in the week) and has a terrific matchup with a reeling Broncos defense that has given up 1.8 pass TDs per game this season.
Knowshon Moreno has been running the ball really well lately and he has a nice matchup with Oakland’s 26th-ranked rush defense. I think he’s a solid RB1 this week…Jonathan Stewart is averaging 108 yards on the ground the last three weeks at a nice clip (6.3 ypc), and the Cardinals have given up 143 yards on the ground this season. Yes, Carolina is one-dimensional, but the Browns, Seahawks and Falcons knew that as well, and they couldn’t stop Stewart either…The Lions have given up 4.5 yards per carry and have allowed 15 rushing TDs on the season, so I think LeGarrette Blount will flirt with a 100-yard game and a score this week…Tim Hightower is out there on a few waiver wires and has a great matchup with a Panther rush defense that is ranked 25th in the league with 133 yards allowed. I’m a tad concerned that Beanie Wells will be healthy enough to get more carries, but at this point it appears that Hightower is still the Cards’ RB1.
Kenny Britt looked pretty good last week and played a lot, so I suspect he’s in for a big game against the Texans’ terrible pass defense. Mario Williams is out, so Kerry Collins should have plenty of time in the pocket to find his favorite receiver…Pierre Garcon is playing well (14 catches, three TDs in his last two games) and he has a great matchup with the Jags. Austin Collie looks like he’s good to go, so he becomes a WR3/flex play in most formats. He’s a little shaky, but he has a lot of upside if he gets his normal snaps…With a nice matchup, Malcom Floyd shaky and Antonio Gates likely out, Vincent Jackson looks like he’ll get a lot of targets against the 49ers tonight…I think both Big Mike Williams and Ben Obomanu could surprise this week against a Falcons defense that isn’t great against the pass.
I’ll be honest — I’ve lost whatever confidence I had in Kyle Orton and Mark Sanchez. They both are playing brutal football right now. Orton’s matchup is better, but I still don’t see him having a good week after what he’s done the last few games. Sanchez has to try to regain his confidence against a tough Pittsburgh defense. Good luck with that…I wish I could be more optimistic about Ryan Fitzpatrick, because he’s a good fantasy story, but with Lee Evans out and a tough matchup with the Dolphins, I don’t see him going off this week.
Even if Shonn Greene is limited, I’d stay away from LaDainian Tomlinson this week. His production is on the decline this season and he has a brutal matchup with the Steelers, who only give up 60 rushing yards per game…In the same game, I’m a little higher on Rashard Mendenhall, but not much. The Jets have the third-best rush defense in the league, and Mendy didn’t do much of anything against the Bengals last week…I would avoid Pierre Thomas and Chris Ivory this week unless Ivory misses the game. The Ravens are a tough matchup, and if Thomas and Ivory are splitting time with Reggie Bush, neither is going to have much predictable value.
Brandon Lloyd was a big surprise this season, but now it’s his lack of production that’s surprising. He’ll probably have Nnamdi Asomugha shadowing him so I’m not optimistic…Sidney Rice looks fine, but with the Bears up next and a rookie QB under center, his numbers could be pretty ugly this week…Mike Wallace is a good, so good that he’ll likely draw Darrelle Revis this week, and that’s not good.
