ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter reports that the Jets have acquired receiver Braylon Edwards in exchange for wideout Chansi Stuckey, linebacker Jason Trusnick and two draft picks believed to be third and fifth rounders.

This is an interesting move for both sides. Because of Edwards’ recent off-field incident, his trade value was never lower, so the Jets jumped on the opportunity to acquire him even though he could inevitably be suspended. If he isn’t suspended and he winds up turning his career around with a this fresh start in New York, then the Jets accomplish their goal of adding a No. 1 (caliber) receiver for rookie QB Mark Sanchez.

For the Browns, this couldn’t have worked out better. They lose a No. 1 receiver, but a No. 1 receiver that is facing a possible suspension, had worn out his welcome in Cleveland and one that had done nothing to deserve a long-term contract. Even though his trade value was low, they faced not getting anything in return for him if he walked via free agency this offseason. But now they get a couple of players that Eric Mangini is familiar with in Stuckey and Trusnick, plus draft picks.

Now that Edwards is gone, Cleveland can give more opportunities to rookie Mohamed Massaquoi and Joshua Cribbs in the offense. The second round pick Massaquoi had a breakout game against the Bengals and could develop into the Browns’ new No. 1 receiver.

This deal has the potential have working out for both teams as long as Edwards pans out for the Jets. And even if he doesn’t produce, they didn’t give up much in the deal outside of maybe the third rounder.

This is interesting news to say the least. Sometimes players just need a change of scenery to reach their potential, and Edwards had definitely worn out his welcome in Cleveland. I believe that Jerricho Cotchery is a better wide receiver right now, but Edwards does have superior size and strength, even if he doesn’t have Cotchery’s hands our route-running ability. For the time being, Cotchery will still be the Jets’ WR1, but they’ll try to get Edwards involved and see if he responds.

For the Browns, this is a vote of confidence for rookie wideout Mohamed Massaquoi, who had a great game Sunday against the Bengals, showing flashes that he could potentially develop in to a go-to WR in the NFL. This boosts his already high stock this week on the waiver wire, and fantasy owners should add him if they have a spot available. Meanwhile, Chansi Stuckey is having a disappointing season, so he should be avoided until the Browns prove that they’re going to use him.
