Yesterday’s 152nd running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs delivered drama, history, and one of the most thrilling stretch runs in recent memory. Longshot Golden Tempo, sent off at 23-1 odds, stormed from near the back of the pack to win the “Run for the Roses” in stunning fashion.
The Historic Winner
Trained by Cherie DeVaux, Golden Tempo became the first horse trained by a woman to win the Kentucky Derby. Jockey Jose Ortiz guided the colt to a dramatic come-from-behind victory, holding off a strong challenge from favorite Renegade (5-1) in second and longshot Ocelli (70-1) in third.
The win capped a feel-good story for DeVaux, who made history in her own right as only the second woman to train a Triple Crown race winner. Golden Tempo paid $48.24 to win on a $2 bet — a nice payout for those who took a chance on the underdog.
Epic Race
The 20-horse field (with a couple of late scratches) broke cleanly, and early pace was set by several speed horses. Golden Tempo settled toward the rear early on, a patient ride by Ortiz that conserved energy for the long stretch at Churchill Downs.
As the field turned for home, several contenders made their bids, but Golden Tempo unleashed a powerful late kick on the outside. It was incredible! In the final furlongs, he surged past tiring leaders and held off a late rally from Renegade to cross the wire first in a stunning finish. This clip of DeVaux watching the race are so much fun.
