Pending Questions Entering Mandatory Minicamps
With mandatory minicamps underway around the NFL and the start of training camp less than two months away, there are numerous questions looming around the league. Let’s take a look at some of the top questions.
Around the league, the biggest obsession is the quarterback play. Surely the rookies will get extended looks, but the status of those coming back from injuries, as well as battles for the starting position will be under major observation.
Expect eyes to be focused on Jimmy Garoppolo, Patrick Mahomes, Dak Prescott, and Tom Brady as they all recover from injuries. All of the above are slated to be ready for training camp. With Drew Brees retired, how will Taysom Hill look as he gets set to take over for the Saints? With the legal issues of Deshaun Watson, Tyrod Taylor will be the man, at least for the moment, in Houston. Will Cam Newton play better than last season and if not, what happens in New England? With Tua Tagovailoa woefully unprepared last year in terms of not knowing the playbook, will he have a firmer grasp of the Dolphins’ system?
In Tampa Bay, the Buccaneers are returning a full slate of starting players. It is commonly believed that NFL teams must continue to add more players to the mix to remain competitive, even Super Bowl champions. The crazy thing, and perhaps scary for the rest of the league, is that the Buccaneers didn’t look great on offense much of the season until very late. Then they carried it through the post season. Although Tom Brady is yet another year older and could be limited, the Buccaneers could still cause major problems for the rest of the NFL. Stay tuned. The NFL betting odds seem to favor them a lot.
One of the biggest stories of late is the Jaguars’ decision to give the nearly 34-year-old Tim Tebow a shot to return to the NFL. This time, the position of choice is tight end. The scenario is fascinating in the aspect that the Jaguars have very little at tight end. One thing is certain. Tebow is in fantastic shape, is a great athlete and is extremely competitive. The biggest question is whether or not he can consistently catch and block. Only time will tell whether or not Tebow can progress enough to make the team or the practice squad.
What about the COVID-19 issue? The NFL recently changed their protocols for vaccinated players. No longer will they have to wear masks or test daily. Travel restrictions have been lifted, no more social distancing or quarantines needed. The key will be to see which players have been vaccinated. As of now, the NFL is not requiring players to get vaccinated.
Keep tabs on the above issues as the NFL inches closer to training camp and then the start of their 102nd season.
