Volleyball is an increasingly popular sport, with millions of fans and participants worldwide enjoying the sport. There are plenty of reasons that volleyball is so popular (and we do not just mean the obvious reason of guys loving to watch fit female athletes in shorts jump around!). Volleyball is exciting, fast-paced, and thrilling to watch as a spectator.

The rules are also very simple compared to many other sports, which makes it easy to follow and quick to understand. Volleyball is also great exercise, and a lot of fun to play with your friends, whether you are playing on a court or the beach.

Are you interested in getting into playing amateur volleyball? Whether you ever have played the game before or are completely new to it, we can help you to get started with these top tips!

Get into Good Shape

Playing volleyball can be physically demanding, even at an amateur level. To avoid injury or exhaustion, getting reasonably physically fit is highly recommended if you want to play the sport. Thankfully, playing volleyball itself is a great form of exercise, so you may not have to take up running or sign up for a gym, you can get fit as you go! Just remember to take it easy and go at your own pace.

Watch Volleyball Games

There is no better way to get yourself familiar with how the game works than to watch live volleyball. If you cannot find local games to visit, you can stream volleyball games online. Watching professionals play does not just help you learn the rules of the game; it also helps you understand the winning techniques of the sport’s best players.

Team Up with Some Friends

Getting some physically active friends together and playing a volleyball game is the best way to get familiar with the sport and practice your techniques. If you do not know anyone who wants to do this, why not check out social media or local groups? Your local gym may have volleyball classes or even a team! Even if you play with just one other person, you can get some practice.

Wear the Right Clothes

Volleyball kits are usually tight-fitting. T-shirt jerseys and tight spandex bicycle shorts are the typical outfits for playing the sport. This is because these allow unrestricted freedom of movement. When practicing, if you cannot get the exact clothes that are recommended, anything that is tight but flexible and comfortable will work.

You will also need to dress safely. This means avoiding wearing any jewelry. Rings, in particular, can lead to injury to your fingers when making contact with the ball. Glasses are also not ideal, but thankfully you may be able to get prescription goggles designed for playing sport. If you have long hair, it is best to tie this back in a ponytail to avoid obstructing your vision and causing an accident. You may also choose to wear elbow or knee pads, and for women, it is best to wear a sports bra for comfort.
