Every week, I will highlight a few players to start and a few players to sit at each position. I’m a firm believer in starting your studs, so I won’t suggest you bench Drew Brees or Adrian Peterson because they have tough matchups – just go ahead and keep them in your lineup. Instead, I’ll focus on the borderline guys – players you’ll only start under the right circumstances.
As usual, I’ll discuss these players within the context of my weekly positional rankings, so remember — everything is relative.
I like Shaun Hill again this week given his matchup at home with the Pats’ 31st-ranked defense…Eli Manning is a little short on weapons, but the Jaguars have given up 246 yards and 2.0 pass TDs per game this season and have enough offense to keep the Giants throwing…Ryan Fitzpatrick‘s matchup isn’t as bad as it looks. The Steelers are 22nd against the pass, though they’ve only given up 1.1 TDs per game this season. Still, I think Buffalo’s plan will be to spread Pittsburgh out and throw, throw, throw…Sam Bradford figures to have another solid outing against a Denver defense that has given up an average of 2.0 pass TDs per game on the year.
Both BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Danny Woodhead should be able to post nice overall numbers against the Lions, who have given up the most fantasy points to opposing RBs this season…Thomas Jones performs well in games that are close or those that the Chiefs dominate. KC/SEA figures to be a close game, so Jones should be very involved against the Seahawks’ suspect rush defense.
Mario Manningham looks like a great start given the Giants’ issues at WR and his matchup with the Jags, who have been bad all year against the pass…Don’t be afraid to start Vincent Jackson this week in his first game back. Norv Turner said he expects Jackson to play a lot since he’s been practicing the last few weeks and Philip Rivers is playing out of his mind right now…Sidney Rice played more than he thought he would against the Packers due to an injury to Bernard Berrian, and I’d expect the Vikings to use him a lot again this week against a Redskins secondary that has really struggled to stop the pass…Need a sleeper? Check out Ben Obomanu, who has played pretty well the last couple of weeks and will step into the Seahawks’ WR1 role if Mike Williams misses time due to his foot injury.
David Garrard has been hot of late, but he has to play the Giants’ 3rd-ranked pass defense in New York, and that’s no treat…He’s still startable in some formats, but don’t expect big things out of Josh Freeman against the Ravens, who have given up just 1.2 pass TDs per game this season and are 10th in yards allowed…I’d steer clear of Jason Campbell this week. The Dolphins are pretty good (5th) against the pass and the Raiders are likely to feature Darren McFadden this week.
Fred Jackson has been playing well of late, but don’t expect monster numbers against the Steelers, who are #1 in the league against the run…Cedric Benson figures to have a down game against the Jets, who have been tough to run on this season…The Falcons have only given up three rush TDs all season and are 6th best in rushing yards allowed, so if Brandon Jackson is going to do any damage, it will probably be through the screen game.
Johnny Knox hasn’t caught a TD pass since Week 7 and that’s the only one he has caught all year. The Eagles have been fairly tough on opposing WRs this season…I’m actually benching Miles Austin for Danny Woodhead in one league. Austin only has six targets in the last two weeks and has a tough matchup with a New Orleans defense that is tied for first in fantasy points allowed to opposing WRs.
