Love ‘Em & Leave ‘Em: Week 11

Every week, I will highlight a few players to start and a few players to sit at each position. I’m a firm believer in starting your studs, so I won’t suggest you bench Peyton Manning or Adrian Peterson because they have tough matchups – just go ahead and keep them in your lineup. Instead, I’ll focus on the borderline guys – players you’ll only start under the right circumstances.

As usual, I’ll discuss these players within the context of my weekly positional rankings, so remember — everything is relative.

Shaun Hill didn’t look particularly sharp against Buffalo last week, but we’ll write that up to being a little rusty after the layoff. He still finished with 323 yards and a score, so it’s not like he was a big disappointment. This week, he faces the Cowboys, who have given up an average of 2.2 pass TDs per game this season…I wouldn’t say that I trust Mark Sanchez, but against the Texans’ terrible pass defense (301 yards, 2.4 pass TDs allowed), he’s bound to finish with nice numbers. Besides, he has accounted for five TDs (three pass, two rush) in the last two games, so he’s playing pretty well…What Jon Kitna and the Cowboy offense did in a tough matchup last week against the Giants has renewed my faith. The Lions are mediocre against the pass, but I suspect that this one might be a shootout. Kitna should have a nice fantasy day.

More and more, it’s looking like Ryan Mathews isn’t going to suit up this Sunday, so that means Mike Tolbert should get the bulk of the carries in a good matchup with the Broncos, who have given up 14 rushing TDs on the season and are 30th in the league in rushing yards allowed…If it looks like both Ryan Torain and Clinton Portis will be out this week, I’ll probably move Keiland Williams up into the high teens. The Titans aren’t a great matchup, but Williams will get a bunch of touches and has proven he can be productive when given the opportunity…The Eagles have given up an average of 104 rushing yards and 0.9 rush TDs per game this season, so Ahmad Bradshaw should have a nice week…The Lions are #26 against the rush and have allowed 10 rush TD this season, so I suspect Felix Jones will be able to build off his very solid Week 10 performance against the Giants.

In his last four games, Dez Bryant has averaged 5.8-82-1.0 and seems to be Jon Kitna’s favorite target. I think he’ll post good numbers in what should be a high-scoring game against the Lions…With Steve Smith 2.0 out another week, Mario Manningham should follow up a strong Week 10 performance with a nice game against the Eagles. However, every so often, Philly is able to totally take a player out of his game, which makes me reluctant to ranking Manningham higher…I like Santonio Holmes a lot this week in a great matchup with the Texans. He has had two straight solid outings and is second only to LaDainian Tomlinson in targets over the last three weeks. I also like Braylon Edwards, but I trust Holmes more.

Ryan Fitzpatrick and Joe Flacco are still decent starts, but the matchups (@CIN, @CAR) aren’t great, so don’t expect huge numbers this week…The Titans give up some yards, but they’ve only allowed 11 pass TDs versus 14 INTs on the season. That, coupled with his struggles this season, has me down on Donovan McNabb this week…While I like Tyler Thigpen‘s chances this season, this is not the week to start him. The Bears have given up just six pass TDs in nine games this season.

After a pitiful outing against the league’s worst rush defense, I’m offically worried about Jahvid Best. The Cowboys aren’t easy to run on, so Best will have to get his numbers in the passing game…Mike Goodson looks to get his second start this week with DeAngelo Williams on IR and Jonathan Stewart still recovering from his concussion. But with the Ravens’ 8th-ranked rush defense coming to town and a rookie QB making his first start, I’m not optimistic about the Panthers’ offense this week.

Steve Smith 1.0 is a great player, but with Tony Pike throwing him the ball and a pretty bad matchup with the Ravens, I’m not optimistic about his chances this week…Davone Bess has been a nice surprise this season, but with Tyler Thigpen in at QB and a stingy Bears’ pass defense coming to down, I’d avoid starting him this week…Andre Johnson is still certainly startable, but he has to visit Revis Island this week and his QB has missed some practice time this week due to injury. There might be a few owners out there with two or three better options this week.
