Marshawn Lynch back on the trade market?
Apparently a 0-3 start has turned Bills GM Buddy Nix into Brian Cashman.
ESPN Milwaukee’s Jason Wilde is reporting that the Bills have put the word out that Marshawn Lynch is available for trade. This comes a day after Trent Edwards was released, so it appears that Nix is starting to get more aggressive in his decision-making.
Too bad he wasn’t this aggressive six months ago when he could have actually helped the Bills build a more competitive team. I don’t understand why he would wait until now to try and get something in return for Lynch. He likely had the opportunity to trade him around draft time and he never did. Now he’s stuck with three starting-caliber running backs (Lynch, Fred Jackson, C.J. Spiller) on his roster and is trying to trade one if them when teams know he has three starting-caliber running backs on his roster.
It just doesn’t make any sense. If the intention was to eventually deal Lynch (and don’t kid yourself – as soon as the Bills drafted Spiller, the intention was to deal Lynch), then Nix should have gotten something before the draft when teams were more motivated to buy. Don’t wait until the season kicks off and teams have had the chance to fall in love with some of their own players that they had throughout training camp and preseason.
Nix will be fortunate to get a fifth round pick in return for Lynch if he winds up trading him now. If he had traded him back in April like he should have, then maybe he would have gotten a third or fourth rounder in return.
Just more bad timing from a bad organization.

YOU KNOW NOTHING..THEY WILL STILL GET A SECOND ROUNDER FOR HIM…..5TH OR 6TH? YOURE A JOKE
Well aren’t you a treat?
I didn’t say “5th or 6th” – I said “fifth.” It’s clearly written above.
And a second rounder for Lynch? Delusional doesn’t even begin to describe you.
We’ll see what kind of character you have when the Bills can’t get a second rounder for him and you’re the one who was wrong. Will you show up here and eat crow or will you be just another hit-and-run wise guy on a sports blog?
I just made this wager online:
JUST ANOTHER HIT-AND-RUN WISE GUY ON A SPORTS BLOG -800 on the moneyline
Obviously this joker that thinks Lynch is worth a 2nd rounder must be from Buffalo and had Lynch on his fantasy team in ’07 and ’08.
Tony, would you pay a 2nd rounder for Laurence Maroney? Because if you woudn’t, you wouldn’t pay that for Lynch…they’re the same back and the Pats got a 4th rounder for Maroney.
Lynch is not the same back as Maroney. That’s a joke right there. He’s currently averaging 4.7 yards per carry behind the worst offensive line in the NFL.
At this point I highly doubt they get a second unless someone is desperate, but I would doubt the Bills would trade him for less than a 3rd unless another player is involved.
So you’re going to compare these two players based on 3 measly games this season or are you going to do a real comparison?
Lynch’s career – 44 games, 683 carries 2757 yds, 4.0 avg, 17 td’s, 94 rec, 670 yds, 1 td
Maroney’s career – 46 games, 594 carries, 2454 yds, 21 td’s, 42 rec, 449 yds, 1 td.
How much closer do you want it? Maroney played in a pass first offense, Lynch in a…well, I don’t really know what the Bills have been trying to do other than try out QB’s who would be better suited to driving a cab. Either way, there’s no way you could convince anyone outside of Buffalo that Lynch is worth a 2nd rounder, especially when a guy with nearly the exact same stats went for a 4th rounder.
Oh yeah…Maroney is averaging 4.1 per carry lifetime. They’re the same player…I’ll throw Marion Barber in there too. All 3 are interchangeable, down to their haircuts!
I tend to agree that the two are very similar. Lynch’s reputation is better because he was The Man in Buffalo for a season or two, while Maroney has been in and out of Beligenius’ dog house.
Lynch does not have great speed, which is what separates the very good backs from the good backs. Plus, he has had off-the-field problems. I think a 4th or 5th is fair.
I’m not going to start second guessing Nix or Gailey right now. If after two seasons the Bills aren’t a better team, then I’ll start whinning. I like what they’ve done so far. I’m glad they don’t let the media tell them how to run a team.
Actually, IronMike, your argument makes the opposite case against you- Maroney was in a prolific, pass first offense, and Lynch was in…well we all know what he was in, but Lynch has more than DOUBLE the receptions, in fewer games. HEAVY advantage to Lynch.
Lynch has managed to average virtually the same YPC…despite having defenses stacking the box against him and daring BUF to throw. Maroney has always had wide gaps to run through, with the defense laying back in pass coverage. Again, HEAVY advantage to Lynch.
Comparing straight up stats without comparing the overall offenses they were in is very misleading…in fact, downright WRONG. Add in Lynch’s obviously superior pass catching ability, and it is simply no contest:
Marshawn Lynch is a FAR SUPERIOR back than Maroney ever has been. It’s not even close. He definately will not be, nor should he be, traded for the same low value that Maroney got. Ain’t gonna happen.
Comparing him to Barber? Wow! That’s some pretty fine company for him to be in, my friend. Barber was, and is, still a BEAST…too bad his coaching staff is total crap and has no clue how to use him anymore.
As John pointed out, let’s keep in mind that Lynch has also been arrested twice and accused of sexual assault one other time. Maroney didn’t have any off-field baggage, so whether or not Lynch is the more valuable running back, his trade value undoubtedly takes a hit because of his track record.
As a Packer fan, I’d prefer Lynch to Maroney, but not if I had to give up a 3rd instead of a 4th. Maroney was yanked around in New England, and while he did play in a good pass offense, Beligenius barely ever threw to him, instead focusing on the wide receivers, Kevin Faulk, Sammy Morris and the like. Maroney proved that he can be a weapon in the passing game by ripping off a 28-yard catch and run against the Colts on Sunday (and he looked fast doing it, something Lynch hasn’t looked in three years).
Samara…I think somebody is spiking your wing sauce because you Bills fans are delusional. What gaping holes was the NE line opening? Their O-line is not very good at run blocking, outstanding at pass blocking. And how do you think 221 yards on 46 receptions more over 3+ seasons is a HUGE advantage?? The difference is only 1 more reception and 5 more yards per game than Maroney. That’s your idea of HUGE?
And are you talking about the same Marion Barber who has averaged 800 yds per season, zero 1000 yard seasons, and has never carried more than 238 times in a year? That’s FAR SUPERIOR? Considering Maroney has averaged 779 yards per season, excluding this year and 2008 when he only played 3 games.
Rushing
Barber – 52.7 ypg, 4.3 ypc,
Lynch – 62.7 ypg rushing, 4.0 ypc
Maroney – 53.3 ypg rushing, 4.1 ypc
Receiving
Barber – 15.9 ypg,
Lynch – 7.1 ypg
Maroney – 10.7 ypg
Show me where Lynch’s production warrants a trade 2 rounds better than Maroney. I agree with JP…I would definitely prefer Lynch to Maroney but not at the price Bills fans seem to think he’s worth.
i dont get why packers wouldnt offer 3rd (which i know is a bit high) but this is supposed to be their year and why not give up a third round (which will be a late 3rd round anyway) to have a decent back and a shot at super bowl.
Lynch has alot to offer a team. Personally, a third round pick isn’t high at all especially if your pick is between 20th to 32nd. Which the Packers are sure to have. Seriously, if a third round pick is gonna win them a superbowl next year, that means they have no legitament shot this one. Who are we all kidding? The Packs need him, Pilly doesn’t, nor do the Saints. I feel like i’m the only one who would pull the trigger to trade A.J. Hawk and a 3rd rounder for Beast Mode. On the other hand, maybe that’s why i’m stuck with a desk job. Just makes way to much sense to me, and I am a Saints Diehard.
