Stan Kroenke the right man to turn around Rams

It has been four years since the Rams have been relevant and seven years since they last had a winning record.

Whether or not owner Stan Kroenke will change the current misfortunes of the franchise remains to be seen, but just having him as the primary owner should be enough for Rams fans to be encouraged about the direction of their team.

On Tuesday, NFL owners unanimously approved Kroenke’s bid to purchase the remaining 60% of the Rams franchise. He already owns 40 percent of the team and will now be forced to sell the Nuggets and Avalanche as part of his approval to purchase the Rams.

Kroenke’s experience lies in sports team commercial management and sports marketing, which won’t translate to any more wins on the field but his commitment to winning will. He has also promised to keep the Rams in St. Louis, which was a key concern for the city and more importantly, their fans.

The key is that this isn’t Kroenke’s first rodeo. He understands how the sports management business works and already has experience working in the confines of the NFL. Obviously the other owners want him in the league, which only works in the Rams’ favor as well.

While Kroenke certainly has his work cut out for him in St. Louis, this probably won’t be a move that eventually blows up in the Rams’ face.

Ochocinco to appear on “Basketball Wives”

CANTON, OH - AUGUST 8: Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens of the Cincinnati Bengals look on against the Dallas Cowboys during the 2010 Pro Football Hall of Fame Game at the Pro Football Hall of Fame Field at Fawcett Stadium on August 8, 2010 in Canton, Ohio. (Photo by Joe Robbins/Getty Images)

TMZ has the details…

As we previously reported, Chad is all set to appear on the show next season — as the love interest of his current girlfriend Evelyn Lozada.

Now, sources connected to the show tell us Chad has inked a deal to shoot several scenes between September and October … and the shoots will be scheduled around his football obligations.

We’re told some of Chad’s scenes will take place in Miami — where the show is based — whenever he can spare the time. However, sources tell us VH1 wants Ochocinco material so badly … they’re willing to shoot scenes out in Cincinnati too.

Lozada is the ex-fiancee of Antonie Walker, so technically she’s not a basketball wife, but the devil isn’t in the details as far as reality television is concerned.

From a fantasy football perspective, the more and more I think about Ochocinco, the less I like him as a WR1/WR2 this year. Terrell Owens is in town, he spent part of his summer on his own dating reality show and now he’s going to be flying back and forth to Miami to shoot scenes for “Basketball Wives.” This all adds up to distraction, and that can’t be good for his numbers this season.

Bottom line — I wouldn’t take him before the 5th round.

Defensive line could be a major sore sport for the Chargers in 2010

SAN DIEGO, CA - OCTOBER 19: Linebacker Shawn Merriman #56, Jyles Tucker #94, and Luis Castillo #93 of the San Diego Chargers leads the team in a cheer before the start of the game against the Denver Broncos during Monday Night Football on October 19, 2009 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California. Merry training camp season, everyone. It’s been a long offseason, but football is finally gearing up again and to celebrate I’m rolling out a new series on TSR entitled “2010 NFL Question Marks,” where I discuss one or two of the biggest concerns that teams have heading into the new season. Granted, some teams have more issues than others, but I’ll primarily be focusing on the biggest problem areas. Today I’ll be discussing the issues the Chargers could have up front on defense.

Thanks to GM A.J. Smith’s ongoing battle with the disgruntled Vincent Jackson, one could argue that receiver will be the Chargers’ biggest weakness heading into the new season. But even without Jackson, quarterback Philip Rivers will have plenty of targets to throw to in tight end Antonio Gates, wideout Malcom Floyd and up-and-comer Legedu Naanee.

With that in mind, the Bolts’ biggest issue still lies on the defensive side of the ball.

In 2009, the Chargers ranked 20th in the league against the run, allowing 117.6 yards per game. After Smith failed to address the defensive line this offseason, run defense could once again be the team’s Achilles heel.

Luis Castillo is still considered the team’s best defensive lineman, but he finished last year with career-lows in sacks (one) and tackles (25). He also underwent offseason shoulder surgery and has missed 15 starts over the past four seasons.

Sonnen to get immediate rematch with Silva?

Chael Sonnen during the press conference for the Ultimate Fighting Championship 109 event at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on February 4, 2010.

Nate Lawson of HeavyMMA.com writes that Dana White has granted Chael Sonnen an immediate rematch with Anderson Silva.

Chael Sonnen’s efforts at UFC 117 may not have earned him the belt, but they have earned him an immediate rematch with middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

UFC President Dana White delivered news of the rematch on ESPN earlier this morning.

In what is a certain “Comeback of the Year” candidate, Silva took a beating for four and one-half rounds, with Sonnen earning takedowns in each and every round and utilizing ground and pound throughout the contest. However, Silva locked on a triangle choke from his back at the end of the fifth, forcing his underdog opponent to submit.

Peek inside the head of an NBA owner

Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley is a character. He appeared on the Chris Vernon Show recently and got into a…um…spirited debate over whether or not the Grizzlies should exercise a little-known clause in the collective bargaining agreement that allows for teams to negotiate a performance incentive into rookie contracts.

Xavier Henry is still unsigned due to Heisley’s insistence on this performance incentive. Rookie contracts are generally ‘rubber stamp’ type deals where the player gets the max (120% of the rookie scale) and he signs immediately. Heisley claims that the Grizzlies are not the only team to use this strategy, but he was unwilling to name any names and I certainly haven’t heard of any other teams doing so.

On the show, Heisley is passive-aggressive, condescending and entertaining, and in addition to the Henry negotiations, he defends the Pau Gasol trade, the Zach Randolph acquisition, and his decision to draft Hasheem Thabeet over Ricky Rubio.

Matt Moore of CBSSports called the interview an ‘abject trainwreck,‘ while Chris Harrington of the Memphis Flyer called it ‘borderline-embarrassing.’
