Every week, I highlight a few players that you should target in waivers. I use the ESPN league data when filtering players, so the only players eligible for discussion here are those that are available on the waiver wire in at least 50% of ESPN’s leagues. I’ll list each player’s percentage-owned after their name so you have an idea of how available they are in leagues around the country. I’ll always try to mention a few players that are available in 90% of leagues for those of you in 12-team leagues or leagues with big rosters. I’ll rank them in the order I’d pick them up in a league with a high-performance, PPR scoring system.
Please note that these rankings are for total value through the end of the year. Players with particularly good matchups this week are in bold.
Matt Hasselbeck (54.6) is out there in almost 46% of leagues and when he’s on the field, he’s clearly roster-worthy. He has a great upcoming schedule, so grab him before picking anyone else up on this list:
Jason Campbell (40.1)
After some early season struggles, Campbell is averaging 218 yards and 1.7 TD over the last three games. A nice matchup with the Chiefs awaits.
Shaun Hill (13.4)
Hill is on bye this week and didn’t play particularly well against the Falcons in Week 5. However, he has a tasty matchup with the Texans in Week 7, so if you’re looking for a bye-week fill in, you could do worse.
Matthew Stafford (6.9)
If he can play, which is unlikely considering the Lions have a bye in Week 6 and may decide to give him the extra rest, Stafford has a nice matchup with the Packers this week.
Derek Anderson (3.7)
Marc Bulger (1.3)
Jake Delhomme (14.6)
Chad Henne (1.6)
Josh Johnson (1.4)
Johnson posted 240 yards and 2 TD (along with three INT) against the Eagles. Not bad for a rookie.
As is usually the case, there isn’t a whole lot out there on the waiver wire at the RB position.
Sammy Morris (38.8)
With Fred Taylor sidelined, maybe for the season, Morris (19 touches, 117 yards) was the clear RB1 for the Patriots. Kevin Faulk had seven touches and Laurence Maroney had five, so it looks like Morris is the NE RB to own going forward. He should be owned in most formats and should be a solid RB2/flex play despite a tough upcoming schedule.
Michael Bush (30.8)
With 13 touches for 43 yards and a TD, Bush looks like the better RB to own in Oakland while Darren McFadden is out. Bush appears to be the goal line back, so that helps.
Jamaal Charles (4.4)
The KC RB1 job is ripe for the plucking, but Charles has a fumbling problem and can’t get out of his own way. Charles is averaging 5.1 ypc to LJ’s 2.4.
Mike Bell (34.1)
Bell has been medically cleared to play, so he should be back in Week 6. We’ll see how Sean Payton plans to use him.
Chris Brown (2.1)
He’s still the Houston goal line back so he’s a threat to score a TD each and every week.
Kevin Faulk (5.7)
Justin Fargas (2.4)
Nate Burleson (50.5)
Now that Matt Hasselbeck is back, Burleson should be more consistent.
Jeremy Maclin (8.5)
The rookie erupted for 6-142-2 against the Bucs. Don’t expect a top 20 finish, but Maclin is currently the WR2 in a great offense.
Donnie Avery (52.2)
Avery hit some waiver wires after a brutal start, but a 5-87-1 day should start to turn things around. The Rams simply don’t have any good options at WR, so Avery should see a ton of targets.
Nate Washington (20.0)
Despite a quiet day against the Colts (3-37), Washington has caught 16 passes over the last four weeks.
Sidney Rice (18.5)
Rice is averaging 4.0-62-.7 over the last three games.
Austin Collie (2.1)
Collie was a big disappointment (1-4) in Week 2 just after Anthony Gonzalez went down, but over the last two weeks he has posted 14-162-3. He’s appears to be safe to use as a WR2/WR3 in PPR leagues as long as Gonzalez as out.
Miles Austin (2.4)
The Cowboys say they’re going to get Austin more involved, but it will help if Roy Williams stays sidelined.
Mohamed Massaquoi (9.7)
He was brutal in Week 5, but the wind was gnarly and he was targeted six times. He is the Browns’ WR1 going forward.
Hakeem Nicks (8.4)
The rookie has 5-103-2 over the last two games and the Giants want to get him involved.
Josh Morgan (52.0)
After just three catches in the first two games, Morgan has a total of 10-164-1 over the last three. After a Week 6 bye, he has two great matchups in the next three weeks with Houston and Tennessee.
Chris Henry (8.9)
He had his first big yardage game in Week 5 with 92 yards. Laveranues Coles has been a non-factor, so if Henry could get completely healthy, he could seize the Bengals’ WR2 job.
Kenny Britt (11.8)
Andre Caldwell (2.1)
As the Bengals’ WR3, his numbers haven’t been consistent, but he has caught six passes twice this season and already has two TD.
Bobby Wade (3.8)
He has at least eight points in PPR formats in each of the last four games. He’s a good guy to have as a fill-in.
Bryant Johnson (1.0)
Keep an eye on Calvin Johnson’s leg injury. If Megatron is out, Bryant Johnson would become the Lions default WR1.
Chris Chambers (34.1)
Mark Clayton (11.6)
Muhsin Muhammad (25.3)
Davone Bess (5.5)
Keenan Burton (1.0)
Burton is the Rams’ possession guy and should get some work as the Rams throw to stay in games.
Earl Bennett (16.9)
Mike Wallace (2.0)
Heath Miller (30.8)
Miller is slow of foot but has great hands, and Big Ben likes him. He is averaging 5.8 catches per game and has posted 13-124-3 over the last two games. I’d say he’s starter-quality.
Todd Heap (38.9)
Heap has 21 catches on the year and 15 in the last three weeks. The Ravens like to run around the goal line, but Heap is a decent backup in PPR leagues.
Visanthe Shiancoe (37.6)
Brett Favre loves to use his TE in the red zone and Shiancoe already has three TD on the season. He’s not being used much otherwise, but 7-67-2 over the last two weeks might be a sign of things to come.
Bo Scaife (7.1)
Scaife has caught seven passes for 70 yards over the last two weeks. He’s a decent backup in PPR leagues.
Jermichael Finley (5.4)
Tony Scheffler (19.4)
He has seven catches in the last two weeks as Orton seems to be looking his way more often.
Brandon Pettigrew (6.4)
Benjamin Watson (28.6)
Watson has caught at least two passes in four of five games and already has three TD on the year. He’s always a threat with Tom Brady under center.
Marcedes Lewis (7.1)
