      Georgia blows out CMU, USC doesn’t play – are Bulldogs No. 1 again?

      Mark RichtLast week Georgia did nothing to lose its No. 1 ranking, yet they fell to No. 2 behind USC in the polls. This week, the Trojans were off (how convenient with No. 3 Ohio State coming to town next week) and the Bulldogs blew out Central Michigan 56-17.

      So will UGA claim their top spot again? If the voters take the same approach as they did last week, then the Bulldogs should be No. 1 again. Technically they outperformed USC on Saturday right?

      Some think I might be over blowing this situation and that Georgia falling last week despite winning isn’t a big deal. But if a program is good enough to be ranked No. 1 in preseason and they win their first game, why aren’t they good enough to be ranked No. 1 heading into Week 2? I still don’t understand it, even though I realize USC might be the better team with how young and inexperienced the Bulldogs’ offensive line is.

      If UGA reclaims the top spot, then somebody needs to cue the tunes because the NCAA appears ready to play musical chairs with the polls again this year.

      East Carolina pulls off second straight upset, crushes No. 8 West Virginia

      Breaking news alert: East Carolina is for real. For the second straight week, the Pirates pulled off the upset of the day, routing No. 8 West Virginia 24-3.

      It was over when… ECU never trailed and never looked like it was going to let WVU back in the game as the Pirates ended a seven-game losing streak to WVU.
      Gameball goes to… Patrick Pinkney: ECU’s QB was 22-28, throwing for 236 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions.
      Stat of the game… 11:21: ECU won the battle of the clock 35:41 to WVU’s 24:19.

      West Virginia is done and Pat White (11 for 18, 72 yards passing) might have lost the Heisman in this game, too. A Big East team that loses before they even reach conference play cannot and should not be brought up in national championship discussion.

      What an incredible year so far for ECU. This was the first time since 2001 that an opponent held WVU without a touchdown. And to limit White to only 72 yards passing and 97 yards rushing was amazing. The Pirates should be ranked heading into next week, although their schedule is too weak for them to be a serious title contender. Still, ECU is the talk of the college football world right now.

      This just in: Notre Dame still sucks

      Jimmy ClausenNotre Dame rallied in the fourth quarter to beat San Diego State 21-13 in their home opener Saturday evening. Quarterback Jimmy Clausen was 21 for 34 for 237 yards and three touchdowns. He also threw two picks.

      The Irish won, but their performance was rather reminiscent of last year. San Diego State was a double-digit underdog and yet gained more total yards, turned the ball over less and flat out outplayed Notre Dame for three quarters. If it weren’t for a couple of costly mistakes in the third quarter, SDS embarrasses ND on their home turf and maybe Charlie Weis doesn’t make it out of the parking lot without his pink slip.

      Look, I’m not a Notre Dame-hater. I just think it’s a little ridiculous that a football program still has their own national television contract and they put on performances like the one Saturday. The game was pathetic and it looks like the Irish are in for another long season.

      Gators use big fourth to top Canes

      The Florida-Miami rivalry isn’t quit what it used to be. The game was largely close throughout, but the Gators used a 17-point fourth quarter to top the Canes 26-3 Saturday night in “The Swamp.”

      It was over when… Tim Tebow’s 14-yard TD pass to Aaron Hernandez came on the Gators’ sixth play from scrimmage and only 2:26 into the game.
      Gameball goes to… Tim Tebow, who threw for 256 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 55 more yards.
      Stat of the game… 1.6: Miami only averaged 1.6 yards per carry and had 61 rushing yards in the game.

      Randy Shannon has Miami’s football program moving in the right direction but Saturday night’s game proves the Canes have a long way to get on Florida’s powerhouse level again. Unfortunately a game like this is a killer for Miami in the Florida recruiting war. They just don’t have any offensive firepower.

      NFL Week 1: 5 Things to Watch

      1.Peyton Manning’s bursa sac/Colts’ offensive line play without Jeff Saturday. Manning had a bursa sac removed in one of his knees and might not be 100% by Sunday night when the Colts take on the Bears. Saturday is dealing with his own knee problems and will miss up to the first six weeks of the season. Chicago blitzes well, so it’ll be interesting to see how Manning moves in the pocket and if his timing will be off in the first quarter or half.

      2. Ricky Williams. The Dolphins host the Jets on Sunday, a team that didn’t play well against the run last year. Williams looked good in preseason and might be a candidate to win the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year.

      3. Tom Brady’s foot. Does he have a broken bone in his foot or not? The Patriots won’t tell, but it should be obvious if Brady looks hampered. He practiced all week and was taken off New England’s injury report so all indications are that he’s healthy. The Chiefs’ secondary is weak, but they do have a decent pass rush and could give Brady and the Pats some trouble.

      4. Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco’s debuts. Forget about previous history – the Falcons and Ravens don’t care. They’re starting rookie quarterbacks and they’re ready to sink or swim with their young signal callers. Neither rookie QB plays a tough defense on Sunday (Ryan and the Falcons host Detroit, while Flacco and the Ravens host the Bengals) so maybe they could build some confidence in their first career starts.

      5. Shawne Merriman’s knee. Merriman will play with a brace for most, if not all of the season because of ligament damage in one of his knees. One hit could end his season (and possibly his career), but assuming he stays upright it’ll be interesting to see how well he moves with a brace on.
