Rams eyeing Dorsey?

Adam Schefter of the NFL Network believes that if Jake Long is off the board when the Rams pick at No. 2, St. Louis will select DT Glenn Dorsey.

The Rams would then move 2007 first-round pick Adam Carriker to end, his natural position. Dorsey would start next to NT Cliff Ryan. Schefter thinks that if Jake and Dorsey go 1-2, Atlanta would lean toward Matt Ryan at No. 3.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Glenn Dorsey is the best defensive player in this draft. That’s not a knock on Chris Long, Vernon Gholston or any other prospect – Dorsey is just that good. He was double and triple teamed in many games this year and he still dominated. He’s going to be a hell of a pass rusher in the NFL, but he doesn’t get enough credit for how he plays the run.

I never got why the Rams moved Carriker to tackle last year anyway. I understand his size allowed him to make the move, but his natural position is at end. St. Louis would go a long way in beefing up their pass rush with Dorsey, Long or Gholston but for what it’s worth, Dorsey would be my pick.

Manu Ginobili wins SMOY

Well, I’m one for one in my year-end award predictions. Manu Ginobili was named this year’s Sixth Man of the Year.

Ginobili led the Spurs in scoring, averaging a career-high 19.5 points to go with 4.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists. Ginobili came off the bench in 51 of the 74 games he played this season.

“I really don’t care about coming from the bench if that helps the team to win a championship,” Ginobili said.

Ginobili got 123 of 124 first-place votes for 615 points. Barbosa came in second with 283 points and the Dallas Mavericks’ Jason Terry was third with 44.

As the final vote count indicates, Ginobili ran away with the award after his best season as a pro. His season was so strong that some brought him up as a MVP candidate.

Report: Dolphins, Jake Long close

According to NBCSports.com, the Miami Dolphins and Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long are close to a contract deal.

Word that Miami initiated talks with Long’s agent, Tom Condon, surfaced almost two weeks ago. Condon actually was in South Florida to meet with Dolphins officials. Miami’s also made overtures toward Vernon Gholston but little other progress has been mentioned.

Meanwhile, with Jake Long off the board, the St. Louis Rams are a lock to go with defense at No. 2 and, according to the same league source, the camp of Virginia defensive end Chris Long is very confident that’s where he’ll be headed.

This makes a lot of sense for the Dolphins. They can upgrade their offensive line instantly (assuming Long pans out of course) and they can give youngster John Beck some protection. Either one of the defensive linemen would be fine picks, but why not get a cornerstone left tackle if you can? The Browns did last year and it went a long way in helping them become contenders.

One and dones

I’m through watching my last press conference where a freshman basketball player announces he is going to the NBA. What a charade! At least in Kansas State’s case they were honest in their presentation. Kudos to Coach Frank Martin and Michael Beasley for not thinking we’re all idiots. Martin, for his part, knows he has the best player in college and knows Beasley could make millions. He clearly stated this is a no brainer. Thanks, coach! Beasley didn’t use any lines about playing at the next level and admitted it was about money. Thanks, Micheal. The real problem lies in the whole one-year rule imposed by the NBA. Gene Wojiewski said it best in his article.

My only question is why are we limiting players to begin with? Isn’t this America? Captialism is what we were built on!!

Scott Skiles in as Bucks’ new coach?

This is still considered a “report,” which is journalist-speak for a “strong rumor,” but the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel is reporting that the Bucks are on the verge of naming Scott Skiles as their new head coach.

Continuing to make significant progress in their negotiations, the Milwaukee Bucks might be ready to name Scott Skiles their new coach in the next day or two.

The Bucks initially considered a number of coaches from an available pool of candidates that includes former NBA coaches Rick Carlisle, Larry Brown, Jeff Van Gundy and Mike Fratello but indications are that the Bucks have zeroed in on Skiles, who was fired in December as coach of the Chicago Bulls.

“The search is continuing,” [Bucks GM John] Hammond said Sunday. “We’re making progress and our goal, as stated before, is to react quickly.”

Asked if the Bucks had decided that Skiles is their man, Hammond said, “We will not discuss individual names of candidates at this time.”

Skiles is a highly coveted commodity who has been linked to coaching vacancies in New York and Memphis as well. It has also been rumored that Skiles might bide his time to see if Miami Heat coach and President Pat Riley stepped aside as coach to pursue Skiles as the new Heat coach.

Regular readers know I’m a Bucks fan, so getting this hire right is especially important to me. Part of me would love to see Larry Brown get the job, but he’s pretty flaky and there’s a good chance that he wouldn’t be around very long. On the other hand, it’s conceivable that Skiles would be the strong leader that the franchise so desperately needs.

The Bucks were one of the league’s worst defensive teams and Skiles is known for his commitment to that end of the floor. The main knock on him is that he’s not widely considered a “player’s coach” because he rubs players the wrong way. But most good coaches do. The worry is that, this season, the Bulls started to tune him out. Still, he went to management and said that the team needed a new voice, so he prompted the change.

The Bucks don’t really have a player that is bigger than the team, so it’s worth the risk if Skiles can whip this team into shape. Milwaukee is currently building around Andrew Bogut, Michael Redd and Mo Williams, who are all good character guys, even if they don’t always pull the team in the same direction.

But that’ll be Skiles’ job, won’t it?

I predict if Skiles does in fact take the job, the Bucks will be playoff-bound next season.
