Could Bonds become a Yankee?

General Manager Brian Sabean recently commented that the Giants might be sellers come the July 31 trade deadline, and the possibility of Barry Bonds being traded isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

That spurned San Francisco Chronicle columnist Bruce Jenkins to at least toy with the notion Bonds would be traded and where he might go. Jenkins brought up the Indians, Tigers, A’s, Angels and Red Sox before squashing those teams for just one: the New York Yankees.

I doubt this would ever, ever, EVER happen because the Giants’ top brass (i.e. Peter Magowan and Larry Baer) are concentrating more on getting Bonds to pass Hank Aaron’s all-time home run record in a San Fran uniform than winning ball games. And if you question me on this, check out the Giants’ putrid lineup these days and then make note that they unexplainably have the 12th highest payroll in the league and next to nothing as far as young position players.

Regardless, could you imagine what the Yankee haters would do if Bonds does wind up in pinstripes? Nevertheless Yankee fans who hate Bonds? Lets hope for the sake of baseball and hell, the human race in general, this doesn’t happen.

IU football coach passes away

Indiana University head football coach Terry Hoeppner passed away today at the age of 59. He died due to complications from a brain tumor.

“You just expect someone that’s as tough and competitive as he is to, no matter the obstacle whether it’s cancer or anything else, show up one day,” said the younger Lynch, who coached with Hoeppner at Miami (Ohio) and followed him to Indiana after the 2004 season. “I was just laughing with the guys, telling them that Terry would probably tell us to suck it up, get going and defend ‘The Rock’ because that’s who he was.”

Hoeppner had gone through two brain surgeries in the past 18 months.

Pacman involved in another shooting?

Per reports from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, suspended Tennessee Titans cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones is wanted for questioning in a shooting that took place early Monday morning outside a strip club in Atlanta. According to the report, two groups of men started arguing outside the club and someone in Jones’ vehicle opened fire on the other vehicle. No one was hit by any bullets and thus far, nobody has been charged.

Fantastic, Pacman may be in trouble again. To give him credit, he waited over a month after being suspended for the entire 2007 NFL season to allegedly get in trouble again. Are you kidding me? He gets racked for a year by Roger Goodell and then turns around and winds up in trouble again a month later? Why isn’t this guy at home on a freaking Sunday night like the rest of the human race? Please, Mr. Goodell, the NFL doesn’t need this guy to survive. If he was yet again involved in another incident, kick his ass out of the league and serve league-wide warning to all players that if they act up, they’re gone too. Playing in the NFL should be a privilege, not a right to those talented enough to play.

I wonder if the national media is going to lambaste Pacman like they’ve been doing to Michael Vick.

Anderson the starter in Cleveland?

The Akron Beacon-Journal is reporting Derek Anderson is the front-runner for the Browns’ starting quarterback job.

If the Browns had to open the season today, the quarterback probably would be Derek Anderson. That’s the word from some with the Browns, but it’s written in pencil, and keep in mind that Anderson is being judged on drills where they wear shorts and helmets and the quarterback is not being sacked.

I had the opportunity to study a couple of Anderson’s games while doing NFL features for Bullz-Eye.com last year, and I was rather impressed. He certainly has the physical tools to compete in the league and his decision-making in his first game as a starter (a 31-28 OT win over Kansas City in Week 13) was above average too. I know some Browns fans have to be a bit disappointed that by all accounts, it doesn’t appear that Charlie Frye is going to make it in Cleveland. However, the future is in Brady Quinn and if Anderson gives them the best chance to compete in 2007, than there’s no question that he needs to be under center come Week 1. Granted, it’s only June and this means nothing at this point, but it will be interesting to follow throughout the summer.
