Porter, other top vets shown the door

The Pittsburgh Steelers decided to part ways with linebacker Joey Porter on Thursday. This news is surprising considering Porter has been a mainstay in the Steelers’ 3-4 scheme for the better part of a decade, and helped them win a Super Bowl just two years ago. It should be noted, however, that Porter didn’t particularly play well last year, and was hampered by injuries. Plus he’s not the best fit for the 4-3 defense, which is the front new head coach Mike Tomlin is expected to run. Porter also complained publicly about his contract situation last year, so the news of his release isn’t a total shocker.

Other notable cuts from Friday: Joe Horn (Saints), Keenan McCardell (Chargers), Drew Bledsoe (Cowboys), Fred Smoot (Vikings) and Kenyatta Walker (Bucs).

Lions send Bly to Denver, shake up at the top of draft?

Detroit Lions’ cornerback Dre’ Bly got his wish to be traded Thursday, as the team dealt him to Denver for running back Tatum Bell, offensive tackle George Foster and an undisclosed draft pick. With the possibility of Kevin Jones being sidelined for the ’07 season, Bell gives the Lions security in their backfield. He’s not the biggest back, and has fumbling issues, but he at least gives the Lions options at the running back position if Jones isn’t healthy.

The potentially interesting move is for Foster, because it seemingly shakes up the top of the draft. With the right tackle spot apparently now filled, Detroit may no longer see top value in Wisconsin OT Joe Thomas. With these top needs filled, the Lions could shop the #2 pick to teams interested in Thomas or Georgia Tech WR Calvin Johnson. Arizona, who is rumored to covet Thomas, could swap its #5 pick for Detroit’s #2. The Cardinals get Thomas, the Lions get an extra draft pick and maybe even Gaines Adams (Clemson) or Jamaal Anderson (Arkansas). The possibilities are endless right now.

For the Broncos, they were in dire need of a corner after Darrent Williams was tragically shot on January 1st. Bly will team up with Champ Bailey, forming one of the best cover-corner tandems in the league.

Favre to Moss? Fantasy owners just pitched a tent

Brett Favre is reportedly making a pitch for the Packers to bring in Randy Moss. According to profootballtalk.com, Green Bay has already offered QB Aaron Rodgers.

On the surface, this idea seems can’t-miss for Green Bay. Donald Driver is aging, Greg Jennings and Robert Ferguson battled injuries last year, and Koren Robinson is in and out of jail. Plus, apples for apples, giving up a huge project in Rodgers for a proven veteran like Moss is a potential steal, although it seems far-fetched that that’s all Oakland would want.

There is no issue when Moss is winning, but look at the disaster he is right now in Oakland. Seriously, watch Moss run an out pattern when he knows he isn’t getting the ball. Watch how he barely fights for the ball if it isn’t a potential touchdown. Watch how he doesn’t cut off his routes when the quarterback is in trouble, and look at his sideline demeanor. Why sacrifice a promising receiver’s game time like Jennings or a highly touted rookie (Dwayne Jarrett maybe?) if Green Bay goes that route in the draft? One could say that he would be more motivated with Favre, but what happens when Favre finally does retire and the Packers bring in a young quarterback or free agent? Is Moss going to behave for the new guy like he presumably will for Favre? Moss may help the Packers get to the playoffs this year, but what happens when or if things start to fall apart? Why should anyone think his actions would be different than they are right now in Oakland?

And remember, Moss just turned 30, not 23.
