Fantasy Football: Waiver Wire Watch, Week 14

QUARTERBACKS

Tony Romo, Trent Green, Vince Young, Steve McNair, David Garrard, Phillip Rivers, Joey Harrington, Jason Campbell, Chad Pennington, Jay Cutler, Jeff Garcia, Matt Leinart, David Carr, Aaron Brooks, Alex Smith, J.P. Losman, Brad Johnson, Bruce Gradkowski

Jay Cutler wasn’t overly impressive in his debut, but he did manage to throw for 143 yards and two scores. His schedule down the stretch looks fair…Trent Green threw for four TDs against the Browns and has two mediocre matchups the next two weeks before a tough matchup against Oakland in Week 16…If you’re looking for a spot starter this week, Vince Young has a nice matchup against Houston. But he’s been playing so well that he may not be on your league’s waiver wire.

RUNNING BACKS

DeAngelo Williams, Ladell Betts, Cedric Houston, Maurice Jones-Drew, Travis Henry, Mike Bell, Ron Dayne, Wali Lundy, Justin Fargas, Sammy Morris, Cedric Benson, Brandon Jacobs, Jason Wright, Leon Washington, Sam Gado, Jerious Norwood, Michael Turner

DeAngelo Williams’ huge Monday night game keeps him at the top of this list, but he’s not available in too many leagues…On the other hand, Cedric Houston may be available and could be a nice option down the stretch and has a nice matchup with Buffalo in Week 14…Justin Fargas might be productive the next few weeks. He scored on Sunday and has two good looking matchups coming up…There was another Ron Dayne sighting this Sunday. He rumbled for 95 yards on 18 carries. Don’t get too excited about him though; he’s always been a tease.

WIDE RECEIVERS

Mark Clayton, Marty Booker, Reche Caldwell, Chris Henry, Mike Furrey, Marcus Robinson, Devery Henderson, Santonio Holmes, Wes Welker, Arnaz Battle, Terrance Copper, Ernest Wilford, Eric Parker, Patrick Crayton, Doug Gabriel

Mike Furrey’s big game pushes him back up this list, but he’s probably already on a roster in your league…Marty Booker scored again, but Chris Chambers was much more active this week…Devery Henderson was a big disappointment especially considering Marques Colston sat out this week…Reche Caldwell is Tom Brady’s top target right now. On Sunday he caught eight passes for 112 yards…With the Troy Williamson demotion, Marcus Robinson appears to be the Vikings #1 option in the passing game (man, it feels weird to type that) and over the last two weeks, he has caught 12 passes for 119 yards and a score.

TIGHT ENDS

Bo Scaife, Jerramy Stevens, Bryan Fletcher, Randal Williams, David Martin, Vernon Davis, Owen Daniels, Alex Smith, Eric Johnson

With Dallas Clark missing the game due to a mysterious knee injury, Bryan Fletcher caught three passes for 56 yards and should be the main TE target for Peyton Manning going forward…Randal Williams continues to be a top target of Aaron Brooks (6-46) but he fumbled twice, which thwarted a Raider comeback.

Panthers blow another fourth quarter lead, give Eagles new life

Last year, Sports Illustrated picked the Carolina Panthers to win Super Bowl XL. This year, many pundits, including ESPN’s Sean Salisbury, had the Panthers Super Bowl-bound yet again. And now after a 27-24 heartbreaking loss to the Eagles on Monday night, one has to wonder if the Panthers will ever live up to all the hype.

When I say live up to the hype, I mean dominating a division and being considered one of the elite teams in the NFL. That doesn’t entail being an inconsistent 6-6 team on the outside looking in at a playoff berth in the mediocre NFC. Living up to the hype is not allowing scatter-feet Jeff Garcia to throw for 312 yards and three touchdowns. Living up to the hype is beating a down trotted Philadelphia team who, before this win, had been looking for a reason to quit on the season when Donovan McNabb got hurt.

I hear every year how John Fox is this brilliant mind that always gets his team to play for him until the bitter end. If he’s so brilliant why did he only run the ball 23 times against an Eagles defense that just gave up 237 yards to the Colts a week ago? If his players play for him until the end, why does Carolina lead the league with five fourth-quarter losses this season? It’s always tough to play in Philly in the month of December, but you have to beat a Garcia-lead Eagles team when a postseason berth is on the line. Especially when you have first and goal from the seven-yard line with less than thirty seconds left to play and a field goal at least ties the game. Now you allow a very dangerous Andy Reid-led Eagles team to have new life.

P.S. I don’t want Jake Delhomme anywhere near my huddle in the fourth quarter with the game on the line unless Jake Plummer is my backup.

NBA Power Rankings (12/4)

Now that the NBA season is a month old, it’s time for a new edition of our NBA Power Rankings.

TOP FIVE:

1. Utah Jazz (14-4)
It’s true that they’ve lost three of their last five, but they still have the best record in the league and deserve the top spot. That is, until they play the Mavs next Monday.

2. Dallas Mavericks (12-4)
After starting 0-4, the Mavs have won 12 in a row and are the hottest team in the league. Next Monday’s game in Utah will give the team a chance to make a statement, but they still have four games to play this week.

3. San Antonio Spurs (12-5)
The Spurs are 6-4 in their last 10 and have lost Manu Ginobili for a few games. In the next seven days they play the Warriors, Bobcats, Lakers and the Clippers twice.

4. Orlando Magic (13-5)
The Magic won six of their last seven and are 8-2 in their last 10, making them the hottest team in the East. They are 3-1 on a West Coast road trip (including a win at Utah) that wraps up tonight against the Kings.

5. Houston Rockets (11-5)
Two games against the Lakers next week will provide a better picture of which team is the fourth best in the West.

BOTTOM FIVE:

26. Charlotte Bobcats (5-12)
The ‘Cats are 2-4 in their last six, but the two wins were against the Pistons and Nets. Gerald Wallace needs to pull his head out of his ass.

27. Philadelphia 76ers (5-11)
After starting 3-0, the Sixers dropped 11 of their next 13, and it looks like the team may fall apart at the seams.

28. Portland Trailblazers (6-12)
The Blazers have lost five in a row, four at home. Ouch. The team needs Brandon Roy back in a bad way.

29. New York Knicks (6-13)
The Knicks have lost seven of their last nine. When do the wheels come off?

30. Memphis Grizzlies (4-12)
The Grizzlies are 3-7 in their last 10, but should be getting Pau Gasol back before the New Year.
