Spurs dominate Kings

I still think the Kings will make this a series, but it certainly doesn’t look promising after their dismal performance in game one. The Spurs scored 73 points in the first half, destroying Sacramento, 122-88. Tony Parker outplayed Mike Bibby, scoring 25 points on 9-15 shooting while dishing four assists. Earlier in the week, Ron Artest guaranteed a series victory, but didn’t play terribly well shooting 7-21 from the field in route to 16 points.

Look for a strong game from the Kings in game two. If they get blown out again, the chances of an Artest meltdown increase exponentially.

Cavs cruise past Wizards

The Cavs dispatched the Wizards, 97-86, in game one of their first round playoff series. Cleveland dominated just about every facet of the game and the contest was never as close as the score would indicate.

LeBron James, in his first ever playoff appearance, responded with a huge game, tallying a triple double of 32 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds. The Cleveland crowd chanted “M-V-P” throughout the game, and James seemed to embrace the idea, putting forth a brilliant effort and getting his team off to a great start in the playoffs.

The Wizards suffered through 15-47 shooting out of their top three scorers, Gilbert Arenas, Antawan Jamison and Caron Butler. 32% shooting is not going to get it done, especially when the team plays little or no defense, as they did in this game. Antonio Daniels played well off the Wizards’ bench, providing 14 points, six assists and five rebounds, and was a perfect 6-6 from the field.

UCLA’s Farmar, Afflalo declare for draft

UCLA sophomore guards Jordan Farmar and Arron Afflalo both declared for the NBA draft yesterday, but wisely, neither player will hire an agent, making them eligible to return to school for their junior seasons.

UCLA coach Ben Howland said he talked to 17 or 18 NBA general managers, who projected Afflalo and Farmar would be selected late in the first round or early in the second round of the June 28 draft.

“Whether they both go this year or come out at the end of next year, they’re both going to be in the NBA. That’s a given,” Howland said at a campus news conference. “I am totally 100 percent behind them, as is our whole UCLA basketball family in their decision to test the waters.”

Like Farmar, Afflalo said he would return to school if he wasn’t assured of being a first-round pick.

Although both players performed well in the NCAA tournament, neither player is a lock to be a first round pick. There are questions about Farmar’s quickness and his inconsistent three point shooting, while Afflalo showed an inability to score against athletic off guards, who he’ll be facing on a nightly basis at the next level. Afflalo is the better defender, and was often matched up with the best perimeter scorer on the other team.

I think we’ll see both guys return to school, but a couple great individual workouts could be the difference between the late first round and the early second.

LeBron James deserves MVP

LeBron James basically sat out the last two games of the season and still made a solid case to win MVP. James has been the best all around player this year and led his team to the playoffs for the first time since the 1997-98 season. The statistics LeBron has posted are almost mind boggling for a 21 year old.

After reviewing the candidates, James should have the MVP locked up. The apprehension writers had because he’s only 21 years old were answered when LeBron ended the season strong and carried Cleveland to the playoffs. Kobe Bryant, the only other possible candidate, is really more of a scorer. The Lakers are barely making the playoffs and Kobe is playing more one dimensional this year than anytime in his career. Kobe can have the scoring title, while LeBron receives the MVP award.
