Does Rush Limbaugh have interest in purchasing the Vikings?

Judd Zulgad of the Minnesota Star-Tribune had an interesting tidbit this morning about Rush Limbaugh, the Vikings and a little city called Los Angeles.

I received a few messages on Monday about an exchange between conservative talk-show host Rush Limbaugh and former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who has announced his plans to run for President.

During the course of an interview, Limbaugh asked Pawlenty about the Vikings’ stadium situation. Obviously, that isn’t Pawlenty’s problem any longer but he certainly is familiar with what has taken place. Here is the exchange as transcribed by the Limbaugh website.

Limbaugh: I know you’re not in the statehouse any longer, but there’s an issue roiling the state right now and that’s the Vikings and their new stadium and how much of it should be publicly financed. The usual threats are being made: If the public doesn’t chip in and build a new stadium the Vikings are gone. They’ll move to L.A. or someplace.

Pawlenty: The rumor is you’re gonna buy ’em and move ’em. Is that true?

Limbaugh: (laughing) Well, uh, this interview is about you. (laughing)

When Pawlenty then laughed, Limbaugh said, “I’ll keep [the interview] focused on you.”

Limbaugh, as you’ll remember, had a hell of a time trying to purchase the Rams a couple of years ago. He wound up being a limited partner but was eventually dropped from the group altogether.

It’d probably be a cold day in hell before Rush ever had the opportunity to not only purchase the Vikings, but also successfully move them to L.A. But since there’s not much going on these days in the NFL thanks to the soul-sucking owners and players, I figured I’d post this anyway. It’s interesting fodder.

Comment starter: Let’s say Rush agreed not to move the franchise from its host city. Would you want him to buy your team? If it were me, I couldn’t care less who bought the team as long as they were committed to winning. Oprah could buy them and as long as the first words out of her mouth were “Just win baby,” then I’d be fine with it. (Again, assuming the Queen of Daytime Television wouldn’t relocate the team or change the name or something.)

Limbaugh lashes out after Checketts drops him from Rams bid

Well, you knew Rush Limbaugh wasn’t going to go quietly into the night after St. Louis Blues chairman Dave Checketts dropped him from the group bidding to become the next owner of the Rams.

From FOXSports.com:

He also said Checketts assured him his involvement as a minority investor had been vetted by the National Football League.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Colts owner Jim Irsay both expressed misgivings this week about Limbaugh’s involvement. Late Wednesday, Checketts said Limbaugh had been dropped from the bid.

Limbaugh says he believes he has been made an example by a players’ union seeking leverage in talks over a new collective bargaining agreement. And he says he believes what happened to him was an illustration of “Obama’s America on full display.”

People can put a racial spin on this situation if they want, but the bottom line is that Limbaugh was dropped because he is a controversial figure. Whether it’s far to Limbaugh or not, the NFL ultimately didn’t want to open Pandora’s box by allowing Rush to become an owner.

But Limbaugh’s comments regarding the players’ union are interesting. The NFL is heading into an uncapped 2010, but would like to renew with the union at some point so that football doesn’t become like baseball where the teams with the most money sign the best players. It’s not impossible to think that the NFL made this decision based on being able to sign a new collective bargaining agreement.

Another interesting debate that is developing is whether or not the NFL is being hypocritical by not allowing Limbaugh to become an owner. After all, Michael Vick, Pacman Jones, Tank Johnson, Chris Henry, Leonard Little and a host of other players have gotten into controversial situations off the field and have still been allowed to participate in the league. But Limbaugh can’t because of his controversial political views?

I get that allowing Limbaugh into the league is a deicer situation than suspending a player and then allowing him to return, but the debate is interesting nonetheless.

Limbaugh expected to be dropped from bid for Rams

According to a report by Adam Schefter of ESPN.com, Rush Limbaugh is expected to be dropped from a group bidding to buy the St. Louis Rams.

Dave Checketts, chairman of the NHL’s St. Louis Blues and the point man in the Limbaugh group attempting to buy the Rams, realizes he must remove the controversial conservative radio host from his potential role as a minority member in the group in order to get approval from other NFL owners, the sources said.

Three-quarters of the league’s 32 owners would have to approve any sale to Limbaugh and his group. Earlier this week, Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay predicted that Limbaugh’s potential bid would be met by significant opposition. Several players have also voiced their displeasure with Limbaugh’s potential ownership position, and NFL Players Association head DeMaurice Smith, who is black, urged players to speak out against Limbaugh’s bid.

Ultimately, the sources said, Checketts must reconfigure his group and find another investor to make his bid more viable.
Exactly when Limbaugh will be dropped is uncertain, though some familiar with the situation said it could be within the next week. It is unclear if the two sides even have spoken.

Checketts and his group would have to find a financial substitute if they do drop Limbaugh, but one shouldn’t be too hard to find. The NFL is widely popular and I’m sure a sound financial risk for a potential owner, even in a bad economy.

While I’m sure he’s upset that he didn’t have the opportunity to own a stake in the Rams, Limbaugh has gotten plenty of publicity for his radio show. But in the end, he was too controversial of a figure for the league to inherit. If there are plenty of financial suitors available, why take a risk on someone like Rush Limbaugh if you’re the NFL?

Boycott coming if Limbaugh takes over as owner of Rams?

In a report by the New York Daily News, a couple of NFL players including the Giants’ Mathias Kiwanuka and the Jets’ Bart Scott said that they wouldn’t play for the Rams if Rush Limbaugh took over as one of team’s owners.

“All I know is from the last comment I heard, he said in (President) Obama’s America, white kids are getting beat up on the bus while black kids are chanting ‘right on,'” Kiwanuka told The Daily News. “I mean, I don’t want anything to do with a team that he has any part of. He can do whatever he wants, it is a free country. But if it goes through, I can tell you where I am not going to play.”

“I am not going to draw a conclusion from a person off of one comment, but when it is time after time after time and there’s a consistent pattern of disrespect and just a complete misunderstanding of an entire culture that I am a part of, I can’t respect him as a man.”

Kiwanuka cringes at the idea of Limbaugh becoming an NFL owner. “They are flat-out racist,” Kiwanuka said of many of Limbaugh’s statements. “He jumps on Obama and he jumps on other people for being racist. But a lot of the comments that he said, I feel like they have no place in journalism. It is just an opinion show that should be only be taken for shock value. I liken it to ‘South Park’ when I am listening to him.”

“I love Spags and would play for him in a heartbeat, but under that situation … obviously trades you have no control over, but if it was a free-agent thing, I wouldn’t care if I only had one offer on the table, I would rather stay a free agent.”

Granted, Kiwanuka and Scott are just two players but this could potentially be an issue for the Rams if Limbaugh takes over as part owner. The Rams are already at a disadvantage given the lack of talent on the current roster. If they’re limited in free agency because certain players don’t want to come to St. Louis, that will only further put them behind the eight ball.

And what about current players? What current Rams are cringing at the thought of Limbaugh taking over?

The St. Louis Rams franchise is quickly turning into the Detroit Lions.
