Reid making the right choice to go with Vick over Kolb

Had Andy Reid stuck with Kevin Kolb as his starting quarterback, he would have mainly done so because a) he drafted him and b) he didn’t want to play the role of fool for benching the man tabbed to replace Donovan McNabb just three weeks into the season.

And had Reid stuck with Kolb as his starting quarterback, he would have been making the wrong decision.

In two outings this year, Michael Vick has completed 63.8 percent of his passes for 459 yards with three touchdowns and zero interceptions. He holds a QB Rating of 105.5 and has also rushed 18 times for 140 yards with no fumbles.

He’s only played in two games, but those are Pro Bowl-type numbers. That’s why Reid’s decision to stick with Vick as his starter was the right choice, even though Kolb was named the starter in preseason and is essentially losing his job because of an injury.

Had Vick showed signs of inconsistency or had been reckless with the football (which wasn’t uncommon for him in Atlanta), Reid would have been justified for sticking with Kolb. But with how well Vick played against the Packers and Lions, this was really an easy decision for a head coach in a tough spot.

That said, winning is the only thing that matters from here on out. If Vick looks like a disaster over the next three weeks (ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting that this is a permanent move by Reid – not an injury-related matter tied to the concussion Kolb suffered two weeks ago), then nobody should hold it against Reid for going back to Kolb. But as of right now, right this second, the Philly head coach is making the right move.

Kevin Kolb has Andy Reid’s backing now, but he better win

After leading the Eagles to victory over the Lions on Sunday, this is what Michael Vick told Peter King in reference to his role as Kevin Kolb’s backup:

“I know Kevin can do it,” Vick said. “I saw him do it all summer. For me, I’ve had a taste of it now, and now, finally, I know it’s going to be there for me. If I have to wait another year, I can. I can be patient.”

Those are the types of comments that show how far Vick has come in his maturity. Although, what else is he going to say? In the last two weeks, he’s completed 37 of his 58 pass attempts for 459 yards and three touchdowns with zero interceptions.

He doesn’t have to say anything – his play speaks for itself.

Vick has put up Pro Bowl-type numbers in his two outings this year, but he knows Andy Reid makes the decisions. And Reid has already made it clear that Kolb is his starter for Week 3 and beyond.

But if I were Kolb, I wouldn’t get too comfortable. Sure, he has the backing of Reid and as long as he plays well, he’ll continue to receive his coach’s support. Reid went to bat for Kolb after he shipped Donovan McNabb to Washington on Easter Sunday and isn’t going to abandon him now for Vick. Reid also drafted Kolb and doesn’t want to be made the fool after choosing him over Vick earlier this offseason.

But again, Kolb better produce. Reid knows that in benching a nearly flawless Vick, he’s running the risk of not only having this situation blow up in his face, but losing games, too. Looking like a fool is definitely the lesser of two evils here.

The Eagles are at Jacksonville this week and host the Redskins next Sunday. Those are two winnable games and if Kolb can’t get the job done, I wouldn’t be surprised if Vick gets the starting nod again in Week 5 when the Eagles play the 49ers in San Francisco.

Or better yet, when they host the Falcons (Vick’s old team) in Week 6.

Don’t bank on Vick replacing Kolb as Eagles’ full-time starter

I’m getting a big kick out of listening to all the chatter going on this week surrounding the Eagles’ starting quarterback job.

Michael Vick plays like the 2002 version of himself for three quarters and now all of a sudden some are ready to anoint him mayor of Philadelphia.

Relax.

First and foremost, keep in mind that part of the reason Vick looked so good last week against the Packers is because Green Bay had game planned for Kolb. While they may have had a plan to defense Vick for the three or four times they should have seen him, they weren’t prepared to stop a mobile quarterback for three-fourths of the game. There’s no question that Vick looked good, but let’s see how he does when a defense has an entire week to game plan for him…

…what? The Eagles play the Lions this Sunday? (Damn it…should have looked at the schedule before making that point.)

Back to Kolb: not only did Andy Reid use a second round pick on the former Houston product in 2007, but he also signed off on the trade that sent his quarterback of the last decade (Donovan McNabb) to Washington in order to make way for Kolb to start. So it’s going to take a little more than one quarter of poor play (with a concussion, no less) for Kolb to lose his starting job.

Even if Vick dazzles again on Sunday, don’t expect Kolb to ride the pine in Week 3 and beyond. When he’s healthy enough to play again, he’ll start. If he looks shaky again, then maybe the fine folks in Philly can start thinking about getting that mayor chair warmed up for Vick.

Michael Vick to start against the Lions in Week 2?

Eagle fans that enjoyed Michael Vick’s performance against the Packers on Sunday might get a taste of it again in Week 2.

With Kevin Kolb’s playing status up in the air due to a concussion, beat writer Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News thinks it’s likely that Vick will start against the Lions this Sunday. The backup came in yesterday and nearly led the Eagles to a come back against the Packers by completing 16 of 24 passes for 175 yards and one touchdown, as well as rushing for 103 yards on 11 carries. Philly eventually lost 27-20, however.

The Lions’ secondary is one of the weakest in the league, so it’ll be a good matchup for either Kolb or Vick. But it’ll be interesting to see what happens if Vick plays well again while Kolb is on the sidelines because it could spark a quarterback controversy in Philly. Andy Reid maintains that Kolb is the starter and he’ll certainly have to do more than look shaky for one half against one of the league’s best defenses (Green Bay) to lose his job. But when it boils down to it, the only thing that matters in the NFL is winning so this is going to be a storyline to follow for the next couple of weeks.

Vick forgets what year it is, nearly rescues Eagles from shaky Kolb

The Kevin Kolb era got off to a less than auspicious start in Philadelphia on Sunday. Not only did the 26-year-old quarterback have to leave the game due to a concussion, but when he was in there he was brutal, finishing just 5-of-10 for 24 yards with no touchdowns and zero interceptions.

Luckily for the Eagles, Michael Vick blacked out at halftime and when he woke up, he thought it was 2002. He wound up throwing for 175 yards on 16-of-24 passing and one touchdown, while also rushing for 103 yards on 11 carries. Outside of being stopped on a 4th and 1 to seal a 27-20 win for the Packers, he was nearly flawless in relief duty.

But Eagle fans hoping to see more of that shouldn’t get too excited because Andy Reid already said following the game that Kolb will start against the Lions in Week 2 if he’s medically cleared to play. Of course, with the new conclusion rules for players, Kolb maybe forced to miss the game and Philly fans could wind up seeing Vick after all.

I’m sure this will be a topic of discussion all week, but it’ll be interesting to see if a) Kolb plays next Sunday and b) if he plays well. If he does play and once again fails to impress (especially against an awful Detroit secondary), then I can’t wait to read the headlines in Philadelphia the next morning. You know some overzealous writer has the words “quarterback controversy” saved in a Word doc right now.
