      Couch Potato Alert: 9/1

      Things are looking up sports fans! With the return of college football, and the NFL kicking off this week, there won’t be a shortage of games to watch on TV this week.

      Plaxico– The NFL season kicks off this Thursday when the Washington Redskins travel to the Meadowlands to take on defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants. The game will be televised on NBC at 7:00 PM Eastern. Be sure to tune in!

      – The fourth round of the U.S. Open will be shown on CBS on Labor Day from 11:00 AM Eastern, to 6:00 PM Eastern. That’s a whole lot of tennis!

      – Speaking of Labor Day, ESPN will be airing a couple college football games on the holiday. Tune in at 4:00 PM Eastern as Fresno State @ Rutgers, and then again at 8:00 PM Eastern to see Tennessee travels to UCLA. Be sure to check ESPNU and other sports networks to see if any games are airing.

      – The Tampa Bay Rays will try to stay ahead in the AL East when they get a visit from the New York Yankees on Wednesday. The game can be seen on ESPN at 7:00 PM Eastern.

      – “Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Dallas Cowboys” will air it’s finale this Wednesday night at 10:00 PM Eastern on HBO. Expect an inside look at how the coaches decide who’s good enough to make the roster, and who’s not. Also: In my last Couch Potato Alert, I said there were six episodes. I stand corrected, this will be the fifth and final one.

      – The ole’ ball coach, Steve Spurrier, will lead his Gamecocks against Vanderbilt this Thursday at 8:30 PM Eastern. The game can be seen on ESPN.

      Sunday MLB Roundup: Sabathia continues to impress

      – C.C. Sabathia looked masterful against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday afternoon. He gave up one hit, and struck out eleven in a complete game effort as the Brewers defeated the Pirates 7-0. Many have questioned the official score keeper’s decision to score an infield hit by Andy LaRoche as a single.

      Sabathia limited the Pirates to Andy LaRoche’s infield single leading off the fifth inning, on a play Milwaukee manager Ned Yost argued was an error on the pitcher, and the Brewers beat Pittsburgh 7-0 Sunday for their eighth victory in nine games.

      “He accomplished a no-hitter and wasn’t given what he deserved. That should have been a no-hitter,” Yost said. “That’s a stinking no-hitter we all got cheated from. I feel horrible for CC.”

      No-hitter or not, C.C.’s been looking sharp since joining the Brewers.

      – Jason Werth hit his third home run in two days as the Phillies defeated the Cubs 5-3 Sunday to split the series. Carlos Zambrano missed his scheduled start in order to rest his tired arm. He’ll expected to start Tuesday against the Astros. The Phillies remain one game back of the Mets in the NL East.

      – The Chicago White Sox are in a dead heat with the Minnesota Twins in the AL Central. The White Sox, who are just a half game up on the Twins, defeated the Red Sox on Sunday to avoid a three game sweep at Fenway. Jim Thome hit a two-run homer in the first inning, which tied Mickey Mantle for 14th place on the all-time home run list with 536. Unfortunately for the White Sox, the Twins were able to demolish the A’s 12-4 behind a home run and four RBI’s from Justin Morneau.

      – The New York Yankees continued to slide on Sunday, losing to the Blue Jays 6-2. Roy Halladay won his fourth consecutive start, and defeated the Yankees for the fourth time this season. It’s been a tough season for the Yanks, especially considering this is their last season at Yankee stadium.

      – Brandon Webb failed to earn his 20th victory of the season against the LA Dodgers. The Dodgers were able to hit a couple homers in the first inning, and never looked back, cruising to an 8-1 victory. The Dodgers are now two and a half games back of the D’Backs in the NL West.

      Boss says Yankees to target Sabathia, Burnett in the offseason

      With his club fading fast, Hank Steinbrenner decided to turn his attention to offseason spending. Steinbrenner recently told Newsday that the Yankees will target pitchers CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett in the offseason.

      CC Sabathia“Everybody’s looking at Sabathia and Burnett, not just us,” Steinbrenner said during Thursday’s game against the Red Sox. “We’ll see. The main concern is, are their arms going to be OK after this season?”

      Once again, Steinbrenner predicted a flurry of offseason activity to make improvements to a Yankees team that may miss the postseason for the first time in other than strike years since 1993.

      “It’s very frustrating. We haven’t given up on this year, but we’re definitely going to be better next year,” Steinbrenner said. “That I can promise.”

      I doubt Sabathia will return to the AL. He’s mopping up in the NL and has already stated that he likes to hit. But money talks, so it’ll be interesting to see how much the Yanks throw at the Brewers’ ace.

      It’s funny how teams would have rather burned their stadiums down than trade for Burnett at the deadline, but now (according to Steinbrenner at least) everybody is interested.

      Sunday MLB Roundup: Relax K-Rod!

      It was yet another important and exciting Sunday afternoon in the majors.

      – Anaheim Angels closer Francisco “K-Rod” Rodriguez continued his tear and collected his 50th save of the season on Sunday in a 5-3 win against the Minnesota Twins. He’s the fastest to 50 saves by far, taking only 129 games to reach the milestone. His next stop: Bobby Thigpen’s record of 57. Say goodbye Bobby!

      – Pedro Feliz hit a huge, clutch walk-off homer for the Phillies to lead them to a 5-2 victory over the LA Dodgers. The Phillies win, plus a Mets loss against the Astros, puts them just a half-game-back.

      – For the fifth time in eight starts, Chicago Cubs SP Rich Harden struck out 10 or more batters. The victims this time around were the Washington Nationals. Harden pitched seven strong innings, giving up just two hits and one earned run in a 6-1 victory over the Nationals.

      – The Red Sox were able to defeat the Blue Jays by a score of 6-5 with a walk-off homer by Jed Lowrie in the 11th inning Sunday. The Red Sox now focus their attention on the New York Yankees, who held off the Baltimore Orioles with an 8-7 win.

      Sunday MLB roundup: Andre Ethier puts Dodgers in first place

      -Dodgers’ Outfielder Andre Ethier hit a two-run walk-off homer on Sunday against the Brewers in a wild 7-5 game. The home run came in the bottom of the ninth after an error-filled top of the ninth that saw the Brewers come back from a 5-1 deficit. The win has put the Dodgers into a first place tie in the NL West with the Arizona Diamondbacks, who were shutout in their game at Houston. Roy Oswalt was masterful, going eight innings, and allowing just one hit. The Astros scored all of their three runs in the first inning, and it was more than they needed.

      –The Cubs went on a hitting spree against the Marlins. They scored seven runs in the eighth inning, and were able to extend their lead over the Brewers in the NL Central.

      -Speaking of hitting sprees, the Baltimore Orioles were one of five teams in the American League Sunday to score in double figures. They managed to put 16 runs on the board. The Twins (11), White Sox (13), Yankees (15), and Blue Jays (15) round out the rest of the double-digit scorers.
