Did the Jets make a lateral move by signing Tomlinson?

Quick question: At this point in their careers, what does LaDainian Tomlinson bring to the field that Thomas Jones doesn’t? “Not much” would be my answer, but apparently the Jets know something I don’t.

Over the weekend, the Jets inked Tomlinson to a two-year, $5.2 million offer. This comes on the heels of them declining to match Kansas City’s two-year, $5 million offer to Jones. If both backs were are being counted on to be a complement to Shonn Greene, why wouldn’t the Jets just hang onto Jones, who by the way, is coming off a more productive season than Tomlinson?

Granted, the Jets released Jones because he’ll turn 32 in August, which makes him 10 months older than Tomlinson. But the dreaded age for a running back is 30 and Tomlinson has already shown signs of wearing down so really, what’s a 10-month difference at this point? Until his tired legs failed him late in the year, Jones was a highly productive back in 2010. Tomlinson looked tired virtually all season.

The Jets may have successfully beat out the Vikings by signing Tomlinson, but they seemed to have made a lateral move.

Chargers trade Cromartie to the Jets

The NFL free agency period is set to kickoff at midnight on Friday, but the Chargers and Jets are already making headlines by agreeing to a trade.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter via his Twitter page, the Bolts have agreed to trade cornerback Antonio Cromartie to the Jets for a conditional 2011 third round pick. The pick will turn into a second rounder depending on Cromartie’s playing time and performance.

Cromartie essentially fell out of favor in San Diego because he wasn’t a fit for the Chargers’ zone defense and also carried baggage with him off the field. But in New York, Cromartie will play in more press coverage under Rex Ryan, which will allow him to better use his ball skills He’ll see a lot of action playing opposite outstanding cover corner Darrelle Revis.

On the surface, this seems like a great fit. Ryan respects his players and commands the same in return, so if Cromartie can stay out of trouble then New York might be his home for the foreseeable future. We’ll see if the two sides eventually agree on a long-term contract, seeing as how Cromartie’s contract expires after the 2010 season.

Thomas Jones set to become a free agent?

According to a report by NFL.com, it’s unlikely that the Jets will pick up Thomas Jones’ $3.3 million roster bonus and if so, the 32-year-old back will become an unrestricted free agent on March 9.

The Jets were hoping that Jones would take a pay cut by restructuring his deal, but the running back declined. With Shonn Greene and Leon Washington already on the roster, New York has the luxury of letting Jones go, even though he’s coming off a career year after rushing for 1,402 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Jones started to show his age in December, but he would still bring value to teams in search of running back help this offseason. The Texans and Chargers are obvious choices, but don’t rule out a team like the Eagles adding a veteran back like Jones to complement youngster “Shady” McCoy now that Brian Westbrook is out of the picture.

Rex Ryan flips Dolphin fans the bird

Jets head coach Rex Ryan gave a couple of Dolphin fans the one-fingered salute at the MMA Strikeforce event in Miami over the weekend. You can see photos of the giddy Ryan and his middle finger at SPORTSbyBROOKS.com.

Ryan has since issued an apology:

Ryan: “It was stupid and inappropriate. I wouldn’t accept that type of behavior from one of the coaches or players and it’s unacceptable from me. I apologize to the Jets organization, the National Football League and NFL fans everywhere.”

New York Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum: “Rex showed extremely poor judgment and his conduct was inappropriate. He knows he was wrong, has apologized and we have accepted his apology. Any other actions regarding this incident will be addressed internally by the organization.”

According to Brooks of SPORTSbyBROOKS, Ryan was verbally attacked several times on his way to his seat by one belligerent Dolphin fan. It was on his way out that Ryan flipped off the fan, so for the most part the coach showed some restraint.

Of course, it didn’t help that Ryan said that, “I just want to tell everyone in Miami that we’re coming to beat you twice next year,” in an interview that was played over the loudspeaker. Still, he laughed after he said it so it was supposed to be in good fun.

Ryan was obviously in the wrong here, but if the drunken idiot kept his mouth shut then Rex wouldn’t have done what he did. I’m not excusing Ryan, but let’s be realistic here: When most human beings are provoked, they react. That said, what’s done is done and he apologized, so nothing more should be made about this situation.

Is Mark Sanchez’s knee injury serious?

According to a report by the Newark Star-Ledger, Jets’ QB Mark Sanchez made a precautionary visit with the acclaimed Dr. James Andrews to have his right knee examined.

Sanchez suffered a sprained posterior cruciate ligament in a 19-13 victory over the Buffalo Bills in a Week 13 game in Toronto when he made an ill-advised head-first slide. The exam is a precaution as Sanchez finished the season strong and showed no ill-effects of the injury.

Sanchez will likely have his left knee examined as well. He injured that knee in college. The trip to Birmingham, Ala., to see Andrews was first reported by The New York Post.

This offseason is vital for Sanchez because the Jets are expected to throw more of the playbook at him in his second year. The reason why some quarterbacks struggle in their second season is because more is expected of them, they have to learn more of the system and because defensive coordinators figure out more ways to defense them. So if Sanchez has to spend most of his offseason rehabbing from knee surgery, that would likely sidetrack his development.

Hopefully the injury is nothing serious though, and Sanchez can put in a ton of work this offseason. He’s going to need it before the season starts again.
