      Phil Davis the next big thing in MMA?

      E. Spencer Kyte of HeavyMMA.com thinks so.

      Phil Davis’ first year with the UFC has already been a very good one.

      The 26-year-old former Penn State wrestler has already earned a trio of victories, a pair of lopsided unanimous decisions sandwiched around a first round Anaconda choke submission of Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 112.

      Saturday night, Davis has a chance to add a fourth win to his yearly total, facing off against Tim Boetsch in his main card debut at UFC 123. Though the 12-3 Boetsch has the edge in experience, Davis is favoured heading into the bout, and with good reason. In a sport where fans and analysts are always looking for “The Next Big Thing,” many have tabbed Davis as the man to carry that moniker in 2011.

      Arguing with that assessment is a difficult task, as the talented young light heavyweight has the pedigree and past performances to make you believe greatness rests in his future.

      UFC 123 complete with 11 official fights

      Nate Lawson of HeavyMMA.com writes that UFC 123 will feature 11 bouts on its fight card.

      “UFC 123: Rampage vs. Machida” is complete with the addition of nine bouts to the now 11-fight card.

      The promotion announced the remainder of the card earlier today.

      The event, which is set for Auburn Hills, Michigan, on November 20, features a light heavyweight tilt between former champions Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Lyoto Machida, along with a welterweight contest between Matt Hughes and B.J. Penn.

      Making up the remainder of the five-fight main card, Joe Lauzon and George Sotiropoulos face off in a battle of two of the sport’s top grapplers, while light heavyweight prospect Phil Davis faces off against Tim Boetsch. The final main card contest announced today will feature Maiquel Falcao and Gerald Harris.

      In addition to the pay-per-view broadcast, the promotion has also announced a preliminary special on Spike TV, which will feature a middleweight bout between Mark Munoz and Aaron Simpson and a welterweight fight between Matt Brown and Brian Foster.

      For the undercard portion of the event, UFC veterans Karo Parisyan and Dennis Hallman and top-level wrestlers Tyson Griffin and Nik Lentz face off, while Darren Elkins vs. Edson Barboza and T.J. O’Brien vs. Paul Kelly round out the remainder of the card.

      Torres to take on Banuelos at UFC 126

      According to Jeremy Botter at HeavyMMA.com, Miguel Torres will take on Antonio Banuelos at UFC 126.

      Heavy.com has learned that former WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres will take on Antonio Banuelos at UFC 126.

      The Super Bowl weekend event takes place on Feb. 5 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. Anderson Silva defends his UFC middleweight title against Vitor Belfort in the main event, while perennial welterweight contender Jon Fitch takes on Jake Ellenberger in the co-main event of the evening.

      The bout will serve as the UFC debut for both Torres and Banuelos and will take place on the pay per view portion of the event. Torres recently scored a victory over Charlie Valencia at WEC 51 after dropping two fights to Brian Bowles and Joseph Benavidez, while Banuelos defeated Chad George.
      Torres will appear on tonight’s edition of MMA Live.

      Benavidez talks Fabiano, Faber

      Joseph Benavidez discussed his upcoming fight with Wagney Fabiano, as well as teammate Urijah Faber’s drop to the bantamweight division with Nate Lawson of HeavyMMA.com.

      Following his disappointing, yet narrow split-decision loss to Dominick Cruz at WEC 50, Joseph Benavidez was looking to take some time off.

      The 135lbs contender had just faced the top bantamweight on the planet, former champion Miguel Torres, and submission ace Rani Yahya all within one year. You could say he deserved a break.

      However, when the WEC came calling for the Team Alpha male product to step in for former champion Brian Bowles against Wagnney Fabiano at this month’s WEC 52, Benavidez did not have to think long about cutting his time away from the cage short.

      “When the fight came up with Wagnney Fabiano, it was kind of a no brainer,” Benavidez told HeavyMMA today. “I was definitely looking to fight before the end of the year. You know, definitely wanted to get in that third fight of the year. I had already taken some time off, and it’s kind of hard man. I’m just a fighter and when someone offers me a fight, it’s always something I want to do. I’m always training and it always feels like the right decision for me.”

      Fabar the key to Bantamweight success in UFC?

      That’s what Jeremy Botter of HeavyMMA.com writes:

      Next Thursday night, long-time WEC poster boy Urijah Faber will make his bantamweight debut against Takeya Mizugaki.

      If “The California Kid” comes away with a win, he’ll make an even more important debut in early 2011.
      By beating Mizugaki, Faber would set up a second meeting current bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz. The two met a handful of years ago when Cruz challenged for Faber’s featherweight title; the loss remains the sole blemish on the current champion’s resume. With all due respect to Cruz, Faber is the 135-pound fighter who holds the key to solidifying the WEC divisions as viable pieces of the puzzle.

      Faber is one of the few stars to crossover from the WEC who have the pre-established stardom to help deliver the lighter weight-classes to the new audience in the UFC. The leader of Team Alpha Male is already a known quantity in the business, and while he’s lost three of his last five fights, the move down to the 135-pound division could be the kind of career renaissance that return Faber to the pound-for-pound rankings he called home for quite some time.
