      Mike Kyle to replace Overeem, face Silva

      Jeremy Botter of HeavyMMA.com writes that American Kickboxing Academy product Mike Kyle will face Antonio Silva on Saturday’s “Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu” even in San Jose.

      Kyle replaces Valentijn Overeem, who pulled out of the fight last week with an elbow injury.
      HeavyMMA.com confirmed the switch with a Strikeforce official on Monday afternoon. The news was first reported by MMA Junkie.

      Kyle has competed mostly at light heavyweight this year, but will return to his original weight class to face Silva, who is considered a contender for Strikeforce’s heavyweight title. Since losing to Fabricio Werdum in August 2009, Kyle has put together a six-fight win streak.

      Silva is coming off a win over Andrei Arlovski in May. His Strikeforce record stands at 1-1.

      Gerald Harris released from UFC

      After losing just one fight during his tenure, middleweight Gerald Harris has been released from UFC according to Jeremy Botter of HeavyMMA.com.

      Harris was notified of his termination yesterday afternoon.

      Harris had won three straight fights in the Octagon after debuting with the promotion during the seventh season of “The Ultimate Fighter,” including two Knockout of the Night bonuses.

      Sources close to the promotion told Heavy.com that the decision to terminate Harris’ contract had to do with his lackluster fight with Maiquel Falco and the shrinking amount of roster spots in each division within the UFC after the addition of the WEC weight classes.

      MMA’s Frankie Edgar at the center of Jets’ comeback win?

      Nate Lawson of HeavyMMA.com writes that Frankie Edgar inspired the Jets’ recent come-from-behind victory over the Texans on Sunday.

      When the New York Jets battled back in the late seconds of their Sunday afternoon game to defeat the Houston Texans, it was not a member of the team that earned the credit for the victory, but rather a mixed martial arts champion.

      On Saturday night, UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar spoke to the New York squad per the request of head coach Rex Ryan, according the the New York Times.

      Edgar became the lightweight champion earlier this year with a decision victory over B.J. Penn at UFC 112, following up the victory with a second in his rematch with the longtime champion at UFC 118. When the New Jersey native addressed the Jets earlier this weekend, his speech was about something that has helped him advance to the top spot in a highly competitive division; mental toughness.

      Matt Hughes fighting like it’s fun again

      E. Spencer Kyte of HeavyMMA.com writes that if Matt Hughes seems like he’s enjoying himself these days, it’s because he is. And the former welterweight champion plans on having fun against B.J. Penn on Saturday day at UFC 123.

      There is a point in the careers of many elite athletes where their once dominant skills start to erode, the twinkle in their eye turns into a glossy stare as they go through the motions.

      Somewhere along the way, the Jim Gray du jour sits across from them, softly and earnestly asking what caused the decline, often eliciting the same response: “It stopped being fun” or some variation on that sentiment.

      Sitting on the sidelines, far away from the daily grind of being a professional athlete, many wonder how such a thing could be possible, ready and willing to trade our daily routine with those of our athletic idols at any moment. But every job gets stale after enough time, and being a professional athlete is no different.

      At that point, there are only a handful of options: riding things out, continuing to collect a paycheck is the path many take, while some decide enough is enough and opt for retirement. A small percentage choose the path Matt Hughes has decided to follow, accepting that his glory days are gone and getting back to having fun inside the cage.

      Tito Ortiz to get one more chance says Dana White

      Despite losing five straight fights, Jeremy Botter of HeavyMMA.com writes that Tito Ortiz will get another shot at staying in the UFC.

      UFC President Dana White confirmed today that Ortiz will face Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. White said he considered cutting Ortiz following his loss to Matt Hamill, but Ortiz convinced his boss to give him one more shot.

      “I thought I was going to cut him,” White said. “I talked to Tito. He came up to me and we had a conversation. Tito said ‘I’m not done. I feel healthy and I feel good.’ And he asked for one last chance, so I’m going to do it.”

      White did say that the Nogueira bout would be Ortiz’s last chance at remaining with the promotion.
      “I’m not the evil bastard everyone thinks I am,” White said. “But it’s definitely his last chance. And he knows that, too.”

      Ortiz has not won a fight since an October 2006 victory over Ken Shamrock. The Nogueira fight is expected to take place in March, likely in the promotion’s return to Abu Dhabi.
