Nate Lawson of HeavyMMA.com breaks down the payroll from UFC 117 and surprise, surprise, Anderson Silva and Matt Hughes walked away with the most dough from the event.

Anderson Silva’s fifth round submission victory over Chael Sonnen in the main event of UFC 117 earned the middleweight champion some walking around money.

According to the California State Athletic Commission, Silva netted $200,000 for his efforts earlier this month. Matt Hughes and Jon Fitch each earned a nice paycheck as well, bringing in $200,000 and $108,000, respectively.

No other fighter brought in six-figures for their efforts in Oakland.

Main event loser Chael Sonnen’s payday was quite a bit weaker after the submission loss in a fight he was clearly winning. The middleweight top contender brought in $35,000, while co-main event loser Thiago Alves earned $60,000, and Roy Nelson took home $15,000 for a 15 minute beating at the hands of Junior dos Santos.

The full payroll from UFC 117 reached to just over 1 million dollars and can be found below.

Nate Lawson of HeavyMMA.com has the scoop on Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic replacing Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 119:

UFC 119’s main event is undergoing a big change.

According to “Fighters Only”, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira has been forced out of his UFC 119 bout with Frank Mir. The replacement is allegedly already in place, as Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic will step in to face the former UFC heavyweight champion.

Filipovic is coming off an impressive submission victory over striking sensation Pat Barry at UFC 115, while Mir is several months removed from his UFC 111 knockout loss to Shane Carwin. However, the bout has yet to be finalized by the promotion.

UFC 119 is set for Indianapolis, Indiana’s Conseco Fieldhouse on September 25. The card features the new main event, along with a co-main event between Ryan Bader and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. The card also includes a welterweight contest between Matt Serra and Chris Lytle, along with a lightweight contest between Evan Dunham and Sean Sherk.

Nate Lawson of HeavyMMA.com writes that the UFC is heading back to the big screen on August 28.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship is making its way back to the big screen.

On August 28, UFC 118 will be broadcast live in high definition in select movie theaters nationwide. The event features a lightweight championship rematch between title-holder Frankie Edgar and former longtime champion BJ Penn. As a part of the evening’s co-main event, boxing great James Toney will take on fan favorite and former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion Randy Couture in what is being billed as a “Boxer vs. Mixed Martial Artist” bout.

Tickets for the event can be purchased at www.fathomevents.com and a list of theaters participating can be found there as well. For parties of four looking to attend the event, an exclusive offer is available through www.ufc.com/4pack. If the fans elect to buy “The Ultimate 4 Pack”, which includes four tickets to the broadcast, they will receive one free TapouT t-shirt.

The event is set for August 28 at select theaters with the five-fight main card broadcast beginning at 10 p.m. ET. Tickets are available now.

Clay Guida brings excitement to the Octagon

Nate Lawson of HeavyMMA.com writes that the relentless style of MMA fighter Clay Guida has brought excitement to the Octagon.

What do you think of when you hear the name Clay Guida?

To mixed martial arts fans, the lightweight’s name has become synonymous with adjectives such as exciting, relentless, and perhaps even reckless. His style has won him a handful of fights and lost him a few as well. It’s a style that leads to him taking plenty of damage while also dishing it out.

But the biggest benefit Guida’s fighting style brings him is the fan support that comes along with being one of the promotion’s top entertainers.

Pleasing the fans seems like a very important aspect of being a fighter. Is anyone here waiting anxiously for a UFC Unleashed featuring Ben Rothwell vs. Gilbert Yvel, Anderson Silva vs. Demian Maia, or Kalib Starnes vs. Nate Quarry? Fans don’t want to see someone lay on top of his opponent, move to mount several times, and still fail to get the finish. And no one wants to see a fighter literally run away from his opponent, especially when that fighter is the UFC middleweight champion and arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

Ben Rothwell out for nine months following ACL surgery

Nate Lawson of HeavyMMA.com is reporting bad news for fighter Ben Rothwell.

This past Tuesday, UFC heavyweight Ben Rothwell underwent surgery to repair his ACL and torn meniscus. The surgery comes under two months after his unanimous decision victory over Gilbert Yvel at UFC 115.
MMAjunkie.com reported the news earlier this morning.

Rothwell stated that he sustained the injury during his first takedown against Yvel in a fight that drew a lot of criticism from Dana White, who was seemingly very unhappy with Rothwell’s inability to finish the fight. The Wisconsin native expects a return in the first quarter of 2011, but has already began physical therapy. He will be able to start back up on strength training in three months.

The victory over Yvel pushed Rothwell’s record to an impressive 31-7, but was only his first fighting under the UFC banner. In his debut with the promotion at UFC 104, Rothwell was battered for the better part of 5:58 by current top contender Cain Velasquez. He was scheduled to face Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic in his second UFC contest, but had to withdraw due to illness.
