For the second straight week, the Rams produced the upset of the day (or at least the upset of the early games) as they smoked the Cowboys 34-14 in St. Louis.

While the Rams have been a nice story the past two weeks under interim head coach Jim Haslett, the story of this game has to be how out of sync Dallas looked offensively without Tony Romo (broken pinkie finger). Despite having a plethora of options in the passing game, Brad Johnson was absolutely brutal until late in the third quarter when the Rams’ defense was playing off the ball and allowed easy completions.

What happened to “American’s Team?” They thumped the Packers in Green Bay and everyone said they were easily the best team in the NFC, if not in the NFL. But in hindsight, something that many overlooked was how bad the defense looked against the Eagles on Monday night in Week 2. Dallas was absolutely shredded and is a fumbled exchange between Donovan McNabb and Brian Westbrook away from being a .500 team. The warning signs were there, but people were so enamored with all of the individual talent Dallas had on offense that they overlooked the underlying issues on defense.

The Cowboys obviously need a healthy Romo to get the offense back in sync. But more importantly, Wade Phillips needs to start making some wholesale changes on defense or else the ‘Boys won’t make the playoffs playing in a stacked NFC East.

After they beat division rivals Dallas and Philadelphia on the road the past two weeks to push their winning streak to four games, fans and pundits alike were ready to crown the Washington Redskins as an elite team in the NFC. But hold that thought.

The previously winless, hapless St. Louis Rams waltzed into FedEx Field on Sunday and beat the Redskins 19-17 on a Josh Brown 49-yard field goal as time expired. It wasn’t only the Rams first win of the season, but it was also their first win after head coach Scott Linehan was fired and replaced by defensive coordinator Jim Haslett.

Haslett’s previous tenure as head coach of the New Orleans Saints was up and down, but his players always played hard under him. You could see that again Sunday as Rams players rallied around their head coach and fought hard for four quarters. And when things took a turn for the worse when Redskins’ RB Clinton Portis scored a go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter, St. Louis didn’t give in like they might have under Linehan.

Washington took a step back with this loss, but every team has bad days. Maybe expectations should be scaled back a bit, but this is still a good team. Had they not turned the ball over as much as they did Sunday against the Rams, they probably would have walked away with their fifth win in as many games.

Still, it has to be awfully concerning to lose a home game against a previously winless Rams team. It’ll be interesting to see how first-year head coach Jim Zorn can rally his team in the wake of an embarrassing loss.

And in his first major move as interim head coach, Haslett has decided to hand the reigns of the Rams’ offense back to quarterback Marc Bulger.

Bulger took all the snaps with the first-string offense in practice — which was open to the media for the first time since the 2005 season — on Tuesday.

“Marc’s the starting quarterback, and he’ll be the starting quarterback the rest of the year unless something happens,’’ Haslett said. “I talk to Marc and Trent (Green) about it. It’s more a gut feeling on my part. I talked to the offensive coaches, and everybody involved, and I thought Marc would give us the best opportunity to win games for the next three months.’’

Well this should make Steven Jackson and Co. happy again. Although with the way this team has played over the first four weeks of the season, it won’t matter who’s under center.
