      Giants inquired about Braylon Edwards

      According to an insider at Scout.com, the Giants contacted the Browns about the availability of wideout Braylon Edwards.

      A February internet rumor had Mathias Kiwanuka going to Cleveland for Edwards, but Scout.com says Kiwi was never brought up in talks. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Kiwanuka traded with all the depth New York has on its defensive line, but Cleveland certainly can’t afford to part with Edwards. Take Braylon off the Browns and their No. 1 receiver is Donte’ Stallworth.

      This confirms the old adage of, “when there’s smoke there’s fire.” Most web sports rumors can be dismissed, but this one just made sense. The Giants are in desperate need of a receiver and the Browns don’t seem willing to commit to Edwards long term. Kiwanuka might not have been a part of their talks initially, but he would make sense for Cleveland, who needs an outside linebacker who can rush the passer.

      According to Luke Chandler of the Akron Beacon-Journal, wide receiver Braylon Edwards is likely to remain with the Browns in 2009 despite rumors that he could be traded this offseason.

      4Braylon Edwards, WR – With the trade of Winslow, Edwards is likely going to be a Brown again in 2009, which is a free agency year for him. The team would have to get at least a first round, and multiple future picks for the Edwards trade to make any sense.

      There are a couple of wildcards in a trade scenario involving Edwards. First and foremost, new head coach Eric Mangini and GM George Kokinis have no previous ties to Edwards and as they proved with Kellen Winslow, they’re not shy about trading a key piece if the right deal came along.

      Edwards’ contract also expires at the end of the year and if Kokinis doesn’t feel that the Browns could re-sign him next offseason (if Kokinis would even want to re-sign him that is), it would make sense to get compensation now.

      Finally, the Giants are in quite the predicament with Plaxico Burress and are clearly in need of a wide receiver. One rumor that has been circulating had the Giants trading DE/OLB Mathias Kiwanuka for Edwards, although that hasn’t picked up much steam over the past couple weeks.

      But in the end, maybe Chandler is right and Edwards will remain a Brown. He certainly has a ton of talent, but he has underachieved for most of his career in Cleveland and unless he produces this season, it makes no sense for the Browns to pony up next offseason to retain him.

      Browns shopping Braylon Edwards?

      According to Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News, the Browns are reportedly shopping wide receiver Braylon Edwards.

      This rumor has been circulating for over a month, but so far nothing concrete has developed. Cimini doesn’t even go into much detail about the subject, in fact all he writes is that he got a “hot tip” that Cleveland is shopping Edwards and asks readers whether or not the Jets should be interested.

      One small rumor that developed late last week had the Browns shipping Edwards to the Giants for Mathias Kiwanuka, which on the surface makes sense. Cleveland is dying for a pass rusher and Kiwanuka, who has experience at both defensive end and linebacker, certainly fits the bill. New York is in obvious need of a wideout with the uncertainty of Plaxico Burress’s situation hanging over their heads, and is stacked with defensive linemen and linebackers after signing Chris Canty, Michael Boley and Rocky Bernard last week.

      But even with the depth they have at defensive end and linebacker, why would the Giants target Edwards? At 26 he’s still young, but he has yet to post more than one 1,000-yard and one 10-touchdown season in his four-year career. Take away his breakout 2007 season (which at this point was an obvious fluke) and he has very pedestrian numbers – not too mention he also came down with a major case of the drops last season. So again, why would the Giants give up a coveted pass-rusher in Kiwanuka (who don’t forget was a late first round pick) for a warm body in Edwards?

      If the Browns do wind up trading Edwards, it probably won’t be until draft day when they could possibly package him with picks and hope for decent compensation. Until then, speculation will run rampant but little action is sure to follow.

      Quinn solid in debut, but Browns choke again

      Brady QuinnAll of the talk surrounding the Cleveland Browns from the start of the season until now has been around the quarterback. But the fact that they sit 3-6 right now after losing 34-30 to the Denver Broncos on Thursday night has little to do with the play of their quarterback.

      It has to do with Kellen Winslow fumbling. And Braylon Edwards not making plays. And the defense’s ability to choke away leads by giving up big plays. And defensive coordinator Mel Tucker putting his corners on islands in the most inopportune situations.

      In his first career start, Brady Quinn was outstanding. The Browns were able to get the running game going and Quinn was able to pick apart Denver’s decimated secondary by getting the ball out of his hands quickly and taking what the defense gave him. His final numbers (23 of 35 for 239 yards and two touchdowns) should have been good enough to earn him a victory. But the Browns continue to lose because they can’t do the simplest of tasks. Don’t turn the ball over. Don’t give up the big play. Don’t squander double-digit leads. Catch the freaking football when it’s throw right at you.

      Conversely, this is a huge win for the Broncos. The AFC West is so horrible that 9-7 will probably win the division. Cleveland couldn’t get any pressure on Jay Cutler all night he shredded them for 447 yards and three touchdowns. At several points during the first half, Cutler looked frustrated and almost downtrodden but the Browns could never break his back (figuratively, not literally obviously).

      Impressive comeback by Denver, but Cleveland choked on applesauce for the second straight week.

      Brady Quinn ready for NFL starting debut

      Brady QuinnTonight marks the much-anticipated NFL debut of Brady Quinn as the second-year quarterback will make his first career NFL start when his Cleveland Browns host the Denver Broncos on the NFL Network at 8:15 PM ET.

      Quinn has been given a fantastic opportunity to succeed tonight. Not only does he make his first start in the comforts of the Dawg Pound, but he’s also facing a Broncos’ defense that has been shredded by air, ground and sea this year, and will also be without cornerback Champ Bailey, who continues to nurse a torn groin muscle.

      Some feel that starting Quinn is a final desperation move by Romeo Crennel to save his job. That might be, but former starter Derek Anderson didn’t give him a lot of choice either. He was plagued by dropped passes (see Edwards, Braylon) and injuries (see Winslow, Kellen), but outside of a great game against the Giants and a decent first half against the Ravens, DA flat out hasn’t made as many plays as he did last year.

      Quinn is going to be fine…at least tonight. The Browns have done a nice job building a solid offensive line and if they can get the running game going with Jamal Lewis, it’ll allow Quinn to take what the Broncos give him (which should be a lot) in the passing game. As long as offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski doesn’t ask him to do too much, Quinn shouldn’t have any problem moving the ball.

      Looking ahead, Quinn has both favorable and nasty defensive matchups. Buffalo will be a decent test next week, but after that he faces two mediocre defenses in Houston and Indianapolis before getting his first huge challenge in Tennessee. He’ll also face Jim Johnson’s blitz-happy Philadelphia defense, as well as the Steelers at the end of the year so we’ll see what kind of mettle the young man has over the next two months.

      But the thing to remember over the final eight weeks is that Quinn is still a pup. The torch has been passed, but everyone should give him time to develop. He might have a dazzling performance tonight, but fizzle next week; that’s just what you get from young quarterbacks. Regardless, the Browns have presented a great opportunity for him to succeed tonight. Let’s hope for Quinn’s sake that the offensive line opens holes for Lewis and the onus can be off of their young quarterback. As long as he doesn’t turn the ball over, he should be fine.
