      Big Ben plans to play despite concussion

      With the Steelers in the midst of fighting for a playoff spot, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger plans on playing against the Ravens on Sunday despite suffering a concussion last week in a loss to the Chiefs.

      From ESPN.com:

      “It’s part of the nature of the beast of playing this game. It’s a violent, physical contact sport and there’s a chance you’re going to get hit,” Roethlisberger said Thursday. “You guys don’t talk about the bruises we have all over our body. If I showed you a bruise on my shoulder and a bruise on my shin, it wouldn’t get talked about as much. It’s a violent sport we play.”
      Roethlisberger, who is having his best season statistically despite the Steelers’ erratic play, is evidence of that.

      The two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback’s latest concussion occurred when his head accidentally struck the knee of Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson while he was being tackled during Pittsburgh’s 27-24 overtime loss Sunday.

      The play was subsequently wiped out by a holding call.

      “It just kind of felt like I got hit pretty hard. Kind of said, ‘Let me catch my breath real quick,’ and by that time the trainers were out there, so I didn’t get a chance to get up,” Roethlisberger said.

      I don’t think there’s any doubt that Roethlisberger will play. He’s one of the toughest players in the league and has shown no concussion symptoms since returning to practice on Wednesday.

      That said, I’m not a doctor and I have no idea how he’s feeling. If he suffers a jarring hit on Sunday, then it stands to reason that team doctors will pull him to risk further injury. If that happens, Pittsburgh would likely see its playoff hopes go down with him.

      2009 NFL Week 12 Point Spreads

      Along with a complete list of odds for Week 12 in the NFL, here are quick-hit previews for the marquee matchups.

      Patriots at Saints, Monday, November 30
      The Saints don’t have to prove anything to anyone because their record speaks for itself. That said, a win over the Patriots on Monday night will go a long ways in proving that they’re a Super Bowl contender. New Orleans has the best team in the NFC, but how does it stack up to one of the best that the AFC has to offer? The matchup between Bill Belichick vs. Sean Payton is going to be terrific.

      Colts at Texans, Sunday, November 29
      The Texans need a victory this weekend to keep their postseason hopes alive, while the Colts are eyeing a perfect season. In Houston over the past three years, the Colts only have a combined scoring edge of 85-78. Indy is 14-1 against the Texans in their history together, but the games have been tight at Reliant Stadium. Can the Texans rise to the challenge and finally knock off their AFC South rivals?

      The news surrounding this game is whether or not Ben Roethlisberger will play after suffering concussion-like symptoms in Pittsburgh’s loss to Kansas City last Sunday. At 6-4, the Steelers need a win and that means Big Ben needs to be in the lineup. Another loss would put them behind the 8-ball in terms of the playoffs, especially considering they play in a tight AFC race. Same goes for Baltimore, which would drop to 5-6 with a loss.

      Big Ben hurts head in overtime loss to Steelers

      Teams never assume victory before they play the game (or at least they shouldn’t), but the Steelers must have felt great heading to Kansas City this weekend. After all, the Chiefs have struggled offensively all season and their top playmaker, Dwayne Bowe, was suspended four games earlier in the week.

      But not only did Pittsburgh suffer defeat on Sunday, but they’re key offensive player also suffered an injury.

      Ben Roethlisberger suffered a head injury in overtime of the Steelers’ 27-24 loss to the Chiefs in Week 11. Big Ben caught a knee to the head on a diving scramble and lay on the ground for several minutes before walking off under his own power. He finished 32-of-42 for 398 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions.

      Roethlisberger shredded Kansas City’s secondary the entire game, but three turnovers and one big play by Chiefs’ wideout Chris Chambers (four catches, 119 yards) doomed the Steelers in the end. Chambers’ 61-yard reception in overtime set up Ryan Syccop’s 22-yard game-winning field goal.

      This loss hurts the Steelers on many levels. Not only did they suffer defeat in a game everyone assumed that they would win, but once the Bengals beat the Raiders in Oakland later today, Pittsburgh will also essentially fall three games back in the AFC North. It’s never easy to fly cross-country and play on the road just one week after suffering a tough divisional loss. But this was a game Pittsburgh needed to win.

      It’ll be interesting to see if Big Ben misses any time. He’s a tough player, so one would assume that he’ll play next week but head injuries are always a little trickier to deal with.

      The Bengals have finally found the right blueprint for success

      Last year, it was easy to view the Cincinnati Bengals as a joke. They were a mess on the field and an embarrassment off it. Their star player couldn’t stay healthy, their running back was a castoff from Chicago, one of their star receivers couldn’t match his off-field antics with quality on-field production and their head coach had no idea how to hold everything together.

      But it’s amazing how one offseason can change everything. Carson Palmer is healthy again and playing extremely well, Cedric Benson has revived his career, Chad Ochocinco is still a circus act (but a productive circus act), and Marvin Lewis’ name keeps coming up as a coach of the year candidate.

      The Bengals beat the Steelers 18-12 on Sunday and they didn’t use smoke and mirrors to do it. They held Rashard Mendenhall to 36 yards on 13 carries by dominating the line of scrimmage and forcing Ben Roethlisberger to beat them through the air. But Big Ben couldn’t and Cincinnati put the clamps on Pittsburgh’s offense inside the red zone and made the Steelers settle for field goals instead of touchdowns.

      All in all, it was a complete effort by the best team in the AFC North. The Steelers and Ravens have often been highly regarded as the most physical teams in the division and the Bengals outplayed both of them not once, but twice this year. As long as Palmer and Benson (he left today’s game in the third quarter due to a hip injury) can stay healthy and the defense continues to play well, there’s no reason to think that the Bengals can’t make a deep run in the postseason.

      The Bengals have finally figured out that chemistry can play a huge role in helping a team win. Gone are the days where the inmates run the asylum in Cincinnati; winning has a way of forcing players to shut up and fall in line.

      2009 NFL Week 9 Picks & Predictions

      Here are my top 5 picks for Week 9 against the spread. As usual, fade at will…

      Steelers (5-2) at Broncos (6-1), 8:30PM ET, Monday
      This game set up nicely for the Steelers, who have won four in a row, are coming off a bye and are playing a Denver team that was thumped last Sunday by the Ravens. But I fully expect Josh McDaniels and the Broncos to learn from their loss last week to Baltimore and rebound on Monday night. Denver is always a tough place to play – just ask the Cowboys and Patriots, whom the Broncos beat earlier this year at Invesco Field. I don’t expect Kyle Orton, Brandon Marshall and Knowshon Moreno to have a lot of success against Pittsburgh’s excellent defense, but I do think Denver’s defense will force a couple turnovers to set the offense up in good field position. Linebacker Elvis Dumervil has been a beast this season and Ben Roethlisberger has always had trouble holding onto the ball. While some will start to doubt the Broncos after last week, I’m holding strong that this is a good football team and will prove it with a small upset Monday night.
      Odds: Steelers –3.
      Prediction: Broncos 20, Steelers 17.

      Texans (5-3) at Colts (7-0), 1:00PM ET
      This game has trap written all over it. The Texans have won three straight and four of their last five, while the Colts finally looked beatable last week in their 18-14 win over the 49ers. Your head and gut tell you that Houston will be able to hang with Indy this weekend and at the very least cover the 9-point spread, if not win outright. But don’t be fooled – the Colts are 9-1 in their last 10 games against the Colts and have covered in six of those 10 games. While the ATS trends aren’t impressive, Peyton Manning should have his way with an improving, but suspect Houston defense at home. With Bob Sanders sidelined again, the Texans should score, but it’s not like Indy isn’t used to not having Sanders on the field. This one will be a little bit of a shoot out, but I see the Colts winning by a decent margin in the end.
      Odds: Colts –9.
      Prediction: Colts 35, Texans 24.
