      David Meggett sentenced to 30 years in prison for criminal sexual conduct

      “Look at that little Meggett go!”

      …all the way to jail.

      Former Giants’ (and Patriots, and Jets) running back David Meggett was sentenced to 30 years in prison after he was convicted of criminal sexual conduct and burglary.

      From the New York Daily News:

      Meggett was convicted in a case involving an encounter with a college student in January 2009, according to the authorities. Meggett was a running back and a punt returner for 10 seasons in the N.F.L. He played six seasons with the Giants. In 1998, Meggett was arrested in Toronto after the authorities said he assaulted an escort worker. A trial on the assault charge ended with a hung jury in April 2000. Meggett later worked as parks and recreation director in Robersonville, N.C., but resigned four years ago after he was accused of sexually assaulting his former girlfriend.

      I knew there was a reason I liked Eric Metcalf better.

      Sounds like “little” David has some issues.

      Blue Jays ask about Zack Greinke

      The Royals have let it be known that Zack Greinke is available this winter and the first club that has come knocking on their door (that we know of) is the Blue Jays.

      According to Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun, the Jays have inquired about the availability of Greinke, who struggled last year after winning the 2009 AL Cy Young Award.

      With Cliff Lee the top free agent on the market, Greinke would appeal to also-rans in the Lee sweepstakes such as the Texas Rangers, Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Angels.

      The Royals are looking for two “can’t-miss prospects” as a starting point in talks on the 2009 American League Cy Young award winner.

      Greinke’s contract includes a limited no-trade clause through the 2011 season and he has a “no-trade list” that includes big market teams like the Yankees and Red Sox. It’s not known if Toronto is on that list.

      The Jays have to do something if they want to compete with the Yankees, Rays and Red Sox in the ultra-competitive AL East. Greinke is coming off a down year but obviously he has the talent. With more help around him, one would think that he would blossom into a consistent performer so we’ll have to see if Toronto can put something together.

      2010 Fantasy Football: Week 10 Rankings

      I don’t generally like to toot my own horn, but since no one is going to toot it for me…well…toot. I finished #5 in Week 9 of the FantasyPros expert accuracy contest and held my rank at #1 for the fifth straight week.

      At the risk of sounding like a broken record, John Paulsen (The Scores Report) currently sits atop the YTD leaderboard as the most accurate expert in our study. This now marks the fifth consecutive week that he has occupied the #1 position. To put this in perspective, Randy Moss has been a member of 3 different teams since Paulsen last trailed someone else in the standings. It’s an impressive feat and Paulsen shows no signs of letting up considering that he extended his lead in week 9. A quick glance at his positional rankings reveals just how dominant he has been thus far. Of the four key positions that factor into our overall results, Paulsen currently ranks in the top 2 for three of them: RB (#1), WR (#2) & TE (#2). It’s been a remarkable run of quality advice and we can only hope the readers at The Scores Report are taking advantage of it.

      Anyway, here are my Week 10 rankings which are sure to change over the next few days, so check them often. I’ll post my defensive rankings on Thursday.

      Tom Brady misses practice due to foot injury

      The Boston Globe is reporting that quarterback Tom Brady missed his first practice of the season due to a foot injury.

      Foot and right shoulder are listed by Brady’s name on the injury report. But the foot injury is believed to be what kept Brady out of practice, considering he is often listed on the injury report for his right shoulder.

      This is the first time Brady has missed a practice due to injury since returning from a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered in the 2008 season. Aside from missing most of the 2008 season, Brady has never missed a game since becoming the starter in 2001.

      I’m not a doctor but this injury doesn’t sound like it’s serious enough to keep Brady out of any games. That doesn’t mean it won’t limit him, however.

      Chances are unless the injury becomes worse this won’t be a big story the rest of the year but it’s worth keeping an eye on as the Patriots battle for a playoff spot in the AFC.

      Vegas pulls Georgia-Auburn odds off board – will Newton be suspended?

      Leave it up to Vegas to offer a window as to whether or not Auburn quarterback Cam Newton will be suspended following allegations that he and/or his family asked for money during his recruitment last year prior to agreeing to play for the Tigers.

      According to a report by Covers.com, Las Vegas pulled the odds for the Georgia-Auburn game this Saturday following a sharp play from a bettor who allegedly knows Newton’s playing status for this weekend. If Newton were to be suspended, the line could drop from 8.5 to as low as Auburn –3 by kickoff.

      That said, it still seems highly unlikely that Newton would be suspended this week. It took the NCAA years to file sanctions against USC following the Reggie Bush fiasco and by the time they did, Bush already had a Heisman Trophy, a Super Bowl ring and Kim Kardashian millions of dollars from the NFL. So it seems far-fetched for Newton to be suspended less than a week after these reports came out.

      Plus, it’s not like Auburn is going to suspend him. First and foremost, they’ve stood by their quarterback amidst the allegations and why wouldn’t they? They’re currently ranked No. 2 in the nation and Newton is in line to win the Heisman. They’re not going to do anything to jeopardize Newton or their season – especially when they don’t have to. After all, it’s not like any hard evidence has come to light yet.

      Let’s keep in mind that if the report is true, how would the bettor get a hold of that kind of information? Does he have a wiretap into the NCAA headquarters or a relative on staff? How would he know whether or not Newton will be suspended?

      We’ll just have to wait and see what happens, although if Vegas is pulling odds off the board then you know they have a good reason to. Those books don’t mess around.
