Fantasy Football: The Postgame, Week 6

Week 6 is pretty much in the books and several wideouts put up huge numbers on Sunday. T.O. scored a hat trick, but his performance was trumped by a class act in St. Louis. LT2 ran roughshod over the 49ers, while Rudi and the Houston QB blew great matchups. But enough with the tease, let’s get to the Week 6 Headliners and Flatliners.

HEADLINERS

Marc Bulger (360 yards, 3 TD, 1 INT)
The Seattle/St.Louis game was a shootout, so it’s no surprise that the two QBs in that game top the Headliners list. Bulger threw like he was still playing in a Mike Martz offense, but benefited from a great game (and a spectacular catch) from the WR Headliner.

Honorable Mention: Matt Hasselbeck (268 yards, 3 TD), Philip Rivers (334 yards, 2 TD), Jake Delhomme (365 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT), Drew Brees (275 yards, 3 TD, 2 INT), Kyle Boller (226 yards, 3 TD, 1 INT)

LaDainian Tomlinson (28 touches, 135 yards, 4 TD)
Tomlinson went apeshit on the 49ers, scoring three times before halftime. Luckily for his owners, the Chargers still played him quite a bit in the second half, and he was able to snag a few passes and score a fourth time. This was the first time in his career that he scored four TDs in a game.

Honorable Mention: Travis Henry (34 touches, 181 yards, 1 TD), Tiki Barber (29 touches, 227 yards), Willie Parker (22 touches, 98 yards, 2 TD), Kevin Jones (29 touches, 163 yards, 1 TD), Warrick Dunn (14 touches, 146 yards, 1 TD), Clinton Portis (19 touches, 75 yards, 2 TD), Ronnie Brown (22 touches, 127 yards, 1 TD)

Torry Holt (8 rec, 154 yards, 3 TD)
There were a lot of strong games turned in by wide receivers today, but none better than Torry Holt. He made a beautiful adjustment on a tipped ball to score his third TD of the day. Right now, he is the hottest fantasy WR in the game. On a side note, do you think Terrell Owens was disappointed to see that five other receivers scored multiple touchdown? He’s just happy to get the win, right?

Honorable Mention: Steve Smith (8 rec, 189 yards, 1 TD), Reggie Brown (6 rec, 121 yards, 1 rec TD, 1 rush, 15 yards, 1 rush TD), Joe Horn (6 rec, 110 yards, 2 TD), Laveranues Coles (5 rec, 106 yards, 2 TD), Mark Clayton (5 rec, 101 yards, 2 TD), Terrell Owens (5 rec, 45 yards, 3 TD), Roy Williams (10 rec, 161 yards, 1 TD), Deion Branch (6 rec, 76 yards, 2 TD), T.J. Houshmandzadeh (10 rec, 102 yards, 1 TD)

Jeremy Shockey (6 rec, 55 yards, 2 TD)
Shockey had his best game of the year against a pretty good Atlanta pass defense. Even more impressive, he finished the game without aggravating his ankle injury. I grow weary of watching him limp around on the field. I get it, you’re a tough guy for playing through the pain. Let’s move on.

Honorable Mention: Antonio Gates (5 rec, 78 yards, 1 TD), Todd Heap (5 rec, 55 yards, 1 TD), L.J. Smith (4 rec, 48 yards, 1 TD), Chris Cooley (2 rec, 27 yards, 1 TD)

FLATLINERS

David Carr (128 pass yards, 2 INT)
Carr squandered a great matchup against a Cowboys secondary that has been playing some suspect football of late. What’s worse, his team was behind the whole game, but he could still only muster 128 pass yards. He looked like the David Carr of old.

Dishonorable Mention: Damon Huard (162 yards, 1 INT)

Rudi Johnson (17 touches, 52 yards)
After a red-hot start, Rudi has cooled off considerably in the last three weeks, rushing for a total of 164 yards and one score in the last three games. Cincinnati is supposed to have the best offensive line in the league, so their inability to run on the Bucs Sunday is a complete mystery. Coming into the game, Tampa Bay had allowed an average of 163 yards on the ground, so RJ’s performance is a big disappointment.

Dishonorable Mention: Jamal Lewis (12 touches, 50 yards), Ron Dayne (11 touches, 18 yards), Reggie Bush (15 touches, 60 yards), DeShaun Foster (28 touches, 70 yards), Willis McGahee (19 touches, 80 yards)

Derrick Mason (0 rec, 0 yards)
Oddly enough, I benched the next guy on this list for Mason in one league and neither guy did diddly-squat. Mason was targeted on that crazy Kyle Boller pass that was deflected into the air before falling into Mark Clayton’s hands. Mason is definitely a better play with Steve McNair under center.

Dishonorable Mention: Jerricho Cotchery (1 rec, 6 yards), Plaxico Burress (4 rec, 44 yards), Keyshawn Johnson (5 rec, 46 yards)

Tony Gonzalez (3 rec, 15 yards)
After a great game in Week 1, Gonzo has been pretty quiet, catching only 11 passes for 106 yards over the next four games. Something stinks in KC, and Gonzo’s production is probably a symptom, not the cause. Regardless, he’s on pace to have his worst year since his rookie season.

Dishonorable Mention: Jason Witten (3 rec, 17 yards)

Weekend Wrap: Late action in the NFL

Here was your best late game in the NFL:

Jets 20, Dolphins 17
I guess this contest wins by a matter of default with the other two late games being blowouts. After being finding itself in a 20-3 hole early in the fourth quarter, Miami fought all the way back to make it a three-point game with under a minute to play. A 50-yard field goal attempt by Olindo Mare fell just short, however, and New York hung on for the victory.

Most impressed with: WR Laveranues Coles had a great game with five catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns. It’s amazing how QB Chad Pennington can continue to find Coles open on so many plays with no real threat on the other side. Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown finally had a breakout day in rushing 22 times for 127 yards and one touchdown. The biggest thing about Brown’s day was the 5.8 yards he averaged per carry.

Least impressed with: Eric Mangini should settle on one running back and right now, the hot hand is Leon Washington. Washington only carried the ball 11 times in this contest, but managed 5.3 yards per attempt and should get the bulk of the carries. Mangini has to find a running game if his team is going to be serious contenders with the Patriots in the AFC East.

Quick Shots:
Okay, who pissed off Pittsburgh? A few days ago Ben Roethlisberger said this team was starting over and the Steelers certainly stuck with that plan Sunday, trouncing the Chiefs 45-7. Roethlisberger was outstanding in going 16 for 19 for 238 yards and two touchdowns. More important than numbers, however, was the way he stood in the pocket like he’s done for the past two seasons and didn’t dive out of plays. He also didn’t throw any interceptions, which has plagued him so far this season. With Cincinnati and Baltimore both falling Sunday, Pittsburgh is starting its climb back up the AFC North totem pole. Nice day by RB Willie Parker (21 carries for 109 yards and two scores) too…Okay, who pissed off San Diego? Nobody? Oh, I guess they’ve played this well all season, huh? The Chargers embarrassed the 49ers 48-19 in a fantasy dream day by RB LaDainian Tomlinson. Four touchdowns on just 71 yards rushing for Tomlinson as San Diego improved to 4-1 on the season. QB Philip Rivers was excellent as well in going 29 of 39 for 334 yards and two touchdowns. Tough day for San Francisco defense – the Niners D gave up a total of 421 yards…

Weekend Wrap: Early Action in the NFL

The best of the best from the early NFL games:

Seahawks 30, Rams 28
These two teams always play each other hard don’t they? Seattle gets a last second FG by Josh Brown to put the nail in a topsy-turvy contest. The Seahawks take sole ownership in the NFC West, but St. Louis proved today that their 4-2 mark isn’t by fluke.

Most impressed with: The two star receivers on both squads. Deion Branch caught six passes for 76 yards and two scores while Torry Holt hauled in eight catches for 154 yards and three touchdowns. While Branch will get more headlines because of the win, Holt continues to outperform most receivers on Sundays and gets less and less exposure.

Least impressed with: Nobody in this game should be ridiculed, but I guess Steven Jackson (20 carries, 56 yards, one TD) getting out rushed by Maurice Morris (23 carries, 74 yards) isn’t too impressive on Jackson’s part. However, Seattle’s run defense is among the best in the league, so Jackson’s low rush total isn’t a total shocker.

Saints 27, Eagles 24
It’s time to stop biting a lip when saying how good New Orleans is. After beating Philly 27-24 on a last second FG by John Carney, the Saints are among the leagues best. The Saints are in first in their division by two games now, play extremely motivated at home and are overachieving on both sides of the ball. New Orleans is a very solid football team and should be recognized after staving off several Eagles comebacks throughout the game.

Most impressed with: Drew Brees are brought security to the quarterback position in New Orleans. He did throw two picks to keep Philadelphia close in this game, but was otherwise marvelous in going 27 of 37 for 275 yards and two scores.

Least impressed with: I’ve said it for a few weeks now about how the Eagles don’t look the same on defense as they did in going to all of those NFC Championship games earlier this decade. They allowed 372 yards of total offense and are allowing opponents to score on a regular basis in the red zone.

Quick Shots:
The Giants look strong again after Tiki Barber (26 carries for 185 yards) pounded a once stout Falcons’ run defense. New York sacked Michael Vick about 42 times in its 27-14 win and are now right back in the NFC East chase…After a painfully slow start against Houston, the Cowboys abused the Texans 34-6 as Terrell Owens scored three times. Now shut up T.O…What a weekend for the city of Detroit. First its Tigers clinched a World Series appearance on Saturday and then on Sunday the Lions somehow found a way to hang on to a 20-17 victory over Buffalo. It was Detroit’s first win of the season…The Ravens defense got beat up like a piñata by QB Jake Delhome in the Panthers 23-20 victory in Baltimore. Delhomme threw for 365 yards and two scores as Carolina is now back from the dead and Baltimore is back to reality…Congratulations to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for winning its first game of the season. The Bucs beat the Bengals 14-13 on a last minute Bruce Gradkowski pass to Michael Clayton. The Bengals have now lost back-to-back games after starting the season 3-0…Another team that notched its first victory of the season was the Tennessee Titans. Rookie QB Vince Young (13 of 25 for 161 yards and a TD) wasn’t overly impressive in the Titans 25-22 victory over the Redskins, but he didn’t throw any picks and kept the offense moving the entire contest. What a crushing blow for Washington to lose against a winless team on its home turf. Yikes…

NLCS: St. Louis 5, New York 0 (St. Louis leads 2-1)

And just like that, the Mets are in big, big trouble. The Mets’ bullpen threw about four times as many pitches last night as the Cardinals pen, and tonight, starter Steve Trachsel had to leave after loading the bases without recording an out in the second inning. He even started the second by giving up a solo home run to Cardinals pitcher Jeff Suppan (!). Two more runs scored on a wild pitch and a fielder’s choice, and that was more than enough for the wheeling and dealing Suppan, who would scatter five hits over eight innings. Not that there was any need to watch after the second inning. Oh, and who knocked in those two runs in the first? Scott Spezio, with another 2-RBI triple. Think he’s playing for a fat new contract?

After four innings of sluggish hitting on the part of the Mets, I started to drift toward my TiVo queue, so I watched the back halves of the first two “SNL” episodes from this season. Man, is that show in a bad way. All of that talent in the cast, and they can’t write a skit to save their lives. Come back Tina Fey. You’re sorely missed.

The Mets send the erratic Oliver Perez (3-13, 6.55, 102K/68 BB) to the mound for Game 4. And at once it hits me that the Mets may not play another game in Flushing this year. Good pitching always beats good hitting. Go ask the AL champion Detroit Tigers about that one.

Weekend Wrap: College Football

Top 10 Rewind:

#1 Ohio State
What a slow day by QB Troy Smith who finished with only 238 yards and two touchdowns for the Buckeyes in OSU’s 38-7 victory over Michigan State. How unselfish is WR Ted Ginn Jr.? So unselfish that fellow wide out Anthony Gonzalez is getting most of Smith’s passes due to the fact Ginn is getting double and triple-teamed by the opposition. Both receivers finished with a touchdown apiece, but Gonzalez had more receptions (12 to 3) and yards (120 to 58). Ginn probably won’t win the Heisman with Gonzalez putting up better numbers, but Jim Tressel has to love the way Ginn gives up production for wins.

#2 Florida
For as well as QB Chris Leak has played for the Gators, you can’t turn the ball over twice late in the game like Leak did. It doesn’t matter if you’re playing Auburn, Ohio State or one of those poor excuses of a school Nebraska plays. Turnovers is what made this 27-17 win for the Tigers and what broke it for the Gators – plain and simple. After leaning on a strong run game the entire night, Florida needed Leak at the end the way the Gators needed Leak in the end of the Tennessee and Alabama game. He just couldn’t deliver and unfortunately it will probably cost Florida a trip to the National Championship.

Look, it might not be fair that Florida has had to play the toughest schedule in all of college football and now face falling down the ranks – in fact, it isn’t fair at all. But this is how the NCAA wants it and despite the hopes of most red-blooded Americans, this system isn’t going anywhere.

I have to give it to Auburn – the Tigers stepped it up Saturday. I criticized them hard for losing to Arkansas last week, but Auburn straightened out its season with this win and will get an undisputed welcome back into the top 10. Great game by Brad Lester (17 carries, 92 yards) along with Kenny Irons (13 carries 66 yards), who both ran ragged through Florida’s usually stout run D.

#3 USC
Do the Trojans look overly impressive to anyone? They certainly don’t to me. After taking a 21-0 lead, USC defeated Arizona State 28-21 Saturday in yet another sub-par victory. The past three weeks Pete Carroll’s team has had to hang on for a victory in the fourth quarter. At first I gave the Trojans credit for the close W’s, but now it’s getting questionable.

In the end, a win is a win, so who cares right? But this isn’t the NFL where a 3-0 ugly win will look like a 45-0 victory later in the season. In college, you have to blow inferior opponents out from time to time to show that you deserve a high ranking. Michigan looks more like a #2 worthy program than USC right now and when the new polls come out, they should reflect that.

#4 Michigan
How about Brent Musberger announcing that Michigan had already beat Penn State with more than 13 minutes still left in the contest? The Wolverines were only up 17-3 (albeit a comfortable 17-3, but nevertheless) and Musberger starts waxing poetically about how Michigan probably will be ranked #2 with its victory over the Nittany Lions. Then PSU scores to make the game 17-10 with about three minutes left and Musberger tells everybody to hold on “we might have a game here!”

Michigan ended up hanging on for the 17-10 win, but slow your role a bit Brent. Nice win for the Wolverines without stud WR Mario Manningham. It’s tough to go on the road without arguably your best offensive weapon and still keep it together.

#5 West Virginia
So much for Syracuse proving to be a decent test for the Mountaineers. QB Pat White rushed for an incredible 235 yards on just 14 carries and scored three times in West Virginia’s 41-17 victory over SU. White was so busy running that he only threw for 97 yards. RB Steve Slaton carried the ball 21 times for 178 yards and two scores. Other than Syracuse being up 7-0 to start the game – this was a laugher.

#6 Texas
Baylor did have a 10-0 lead against the Long Horns Saturday night. Then Texas woke up and blew by the Bears 63-31 on the strength of an amazing six-touchdown performance by freshman QB Colt McCoy. McCoy connected with receivers Limas Sneed and Billy Pittman twice each and finished with 276 yards on 21 of 32 passing. The Long Horns are quietly sneaking back into the top five, especially with Florida losing. The defense might not be as stout as it was when it started the season, but McCoy is playing great and Texas has a bright future with this kid only being a freshman.

#7 Louisville
The Cardinals got QB Brian Brohm back from injury and he looked sharp in a too-close-for-comfort
23-17 win over Cincinnati. Brohm completed 20 of 36 passes for 321 yards and a touchdown. The Bearcats made it close at the end when QB Dustin Grutza hit Derrick Stewart on a touchdown pass that cut Louisville’s lead to 23-17 with four minutes left to go in the contest. Grutza drove Cincinnati 71 yards to the Cardinals’ 21-yard line after a Louisville punt, but failed to connect on a 4th and 15 on the last play of the game. Louisville’s fifth ranked rushing attack was held to just 105 yards.

#8 Tennessee
Off – will host Alabama next weekend.

#9 Notre Dame
Off – will host USC in South Bend next weekend.

#10 California
The Golden Bears didn’t have much trouble against fellow Pac 10 opponent Washington State. California took care of business on the road in a 21-3 contest that didn’t feature a score in the entire second half. Junior RB Marshawn Lynch provided all the offense that the Bears needed, rushing 24 times for 147 yards and two scores.

Most impressed with: I think I have to go with a quarterback (White) rushing for 235 yards on just 14 carries. Regardless of whom they played, that was a hell of a day for the Mountaineer.

Lest impressed with: Florida not using Tim Tebow like it did last week. Where was this guy against Auburn? Everybody just hailed this team (including myself) on how well Urban Meyer got this kid the ball and then he’s virtually a no-show except for a rushing TD. After Leak’s performance, I can hear the calls for Tebow starting to rumble now.

Biggest melee of the day: Do yourself a favor and read this article about Miami and Florida International throwing haymakers at each other for five minutes before being retained by police officers. As if that wasn’t enough, the officers had to then go into the stands because several fans decided to act out what was going happening on the field. Wonderful, another situation where Hurricane players are throwing punches.

Upset of the day: It’s a toss up between #15 Iowa losing to Indiana 31-28 or #16 Georgia losing 24-22 to Vanderbilt. It has to be the Bulldogs, however, because at least the Hawkeyes lost on the road. How does Georgia get trounced last week at home to Tennessee, only to turn around and lose again between the hedges to freakin Vanderbilt? I understand that the Commodores might possibly have their best team since 1982, but Georgia was a team that was supposed to be a big contender in the SEC. Forget that notion now, Florida is going to wipe the floor with these guys in two weeks.

Looking forward: Iowa-Michigan should have been hyped, but with the Hawkeyes choking Saturday in Indiana, that showdown is a moot point now. Texas-Nebraska should be a good contest, but the last big game that the Cornhuskers had on their schedule, NEB dropped the ball against USC. So forget that one too.

Believe it or not, the best game on the schedule next week is Georgia Tech at Clemson. Possibly the two biggest surprises this season square off in what should be an even match up. With the Tigers racking up 63 points on that high school team named Temple last Thursday and GT coming off a bye, this game might be a great ACC shootout.
