Twins’ lose Liriano for ’07 season

The aftermath of the 2006 World Series is not even a week old and the Minnesota Twins have already lost a key member of its pitching rotation. After only being able to pitch six innings throughout the final two months of the season, it was determined that Francisco Liriano needed Tommy John surgery on his left elbow.

Promoted to the rotation in mid-May, Liriano dominated the league with a wicked slider that he often threw well over 90 mph and went 12-3 with a 2.16 ERA and 144 strikeouts in 121 innings as a rookie. It’s possible the strain put on his arm by throwing that pitch so hard was part of this problem with his ulnar collateral ligament, which first popped up in late July and was diagnosed then as a mild strain.

Obviously this is a huge blow for the Twins after such a dominating rookie campaign by Liriano. The best thing that Minnesota can do for both its future and Liriano’s career is to let him fully recover. As similar to the cases of Kerry Wood and Mark Prior of the Chicago Cubs, when young pitchers experience injuries so early in their careers, it’s important for those athletes that the club doesn’t rush them back.

Hopefully the Twins are smart enough to allow Liriano to regain his full health.

Fantasy Football: The Pregame, Week 9

Each week in the Pregame, I’ll provide a few players to start and a few to bench. These recommendations are based on that player’s strength of schedule (SOS) for that particular week or that player’s specific situation.

I’m a strong advocate of always starting your studs, so I won’t be telling you about LaDainian Tomlinson’s tough matchup or how Peyton Manning and company will light it up against a bad defense. Anyone can make those calls. I’ll be discussing marginal fantasy starters – guys that can start for you, but only under certain circumstances.

START

TONY ROMO, BRAD JOHNSON, DREW BREES and DAVID CARR are all marginal starters that have nice matchups this week against subpar pass defenses…If he plays, LAMONT JORDAN should be a nice start against the Seahawks, who have had trouble stopping the run in recent weeks…JAMAL LEWIS and WILLIS MCGAHEE also have good matchups, but don’t bench a stud that’s playing well for any of these guys…MIKE FURREY, EDDIE KENNISON, ANTONIO BRYANT and LEE EVANS are good options this week. They all face subpar pass defenses.

BENCH

PHILLIP RIVERS has a tough matchup against a Browns defense that is pretty good against the pass. Likewise, SENECA WALLACE, MARK BRUNELL and BEN ROETHLISBERGER should probably ride the pine this week…RUDI JOHNSON, RONNIE BROWN, THOMAS JONES and FRANK GORE all have tough matchups this week, but only bench these guys if you have another good option. In fact, I’d probably still start Rudi over the disappointing Jamal Lewis at this point…The NEW ENGLAND RECEIVERS might find the going tough against a Colts team that is pretty good against the pass. The Pats should be able to run at will, so Tom Brady and company may not have to throw it much…SANTANA MOSS also has a bad matchup, but he can explode at any time, so it’s wise only to bench him if you have another good option.

Be sure to check back Saturday for a full injury update. In the meantime, feel free to post your questions on our Fantasy Q & A.

Spurs, Clippers victorious

There were only two games tonight in the NBA, but they were both good matchups. The Spurs beat the Mavs in Dallas, 97-91, even though Tim Duncan didn’t play very well. It’s early, but San Antonio’s win on the road is a statement. The Spurs found something in Francisco Elson, a seven-foot forward/center whom they signed away from the Denver Nuggets. He is a tremendous athlete and can run the floor. Against the Mavs, he tallied 12 points, 6 rebounds and blocked two shots in 26 minutes. Look for his role to increase as he gains more experience. With Duncan and Manu Ginobili completely healthy, the Spurs look like the class of the West.

In the other game, the Clippers bounced back from a loss at Phoenix last night to nip the Nuggets, 96-95. Carmelo Anthony was ejected early in the third quarter after drawing two technicals for arguing with the officials, so the Clippers really should have won this game by a larger margin. In truth, they were lucky to escape with a win. Sam Cassell made a bonehead turnover late in the game with his team up one that led to a J.R. Smith dunk. But Cassell is nothing if not crafty, and he drew a foul on the next possession to give the Clippers the win. He finished with 35 points, six rebounds and six assists. On the other hand, Smith is primed for a breakout year as the Nuggets’ starting shooting guard. He led Denver with 21 points and provides the long-range shooting that the Nuggets so desperately need.

On a side note, the NBA should consider giving home court advantage to whomever wins the season series. This would place a bigger emphasis on regular season games and give the players something else to play for. If two teams split the season series, then home court would go to the team with the better record, as it does now. Thoughts?

Brady vs. Manning: Are we watching the best ever?

As the Patriots get set to take on the Colts in the NFL’s best match up this week, ESPN.com journalist Michael Smith has raised an interesting question in his latest column: are we watching the best quarterbacks ever in Tom Brady and Peyton Manning?

It always seems far fetched to say that a player, team or game should be labeled has “the best ever”. However, when you think about what Brady and Manning have done in this league and what is still left to come – wow. Brady already has three rings and is possibly working on another one, while Manning will probably own every NFL passing record when he finally calls it a career. One has taken his team down the field on game winning drives during a Super Bowl ala Joe Montana, while the other is shattering everything we used to link to Dan Marino’s name. And while Marino and Montana were in separate conferences, how lucky is this generation to get the chance to watch Brady vs. Manning virtually every year?

Everybody loves to discuss which QB they’d take if they were starting a franchise today. But bask in the moment for a second that we might be watching the two best signal callers every to play the game.
