How did your team do at the trade deadline? If you’re a Braves or Red Sox fan, you’re probably pretty happy right now. But instead of doing an analysis on all the trades, in my latest column I decided to look at how past deals involving Grady Sizemore, Hanley Ramirez and Brad Penny played out.

Los Angeles Clippers forward Elton Brand ruptured his left Achilles tendon during his usual workout routine.
Achilles tendon injuries typically sideline NBA players for at least a year, which would theoretically threaten Brand’s availability for all of the 2007-08 season.
But ESPN.com’s Marc Stein reports that the Clippers have received a preliminary medical indication that Brand will be sidelined only six months. If so, Brand would be in line for a comeback in February.
The Clippers are already a bubble playoff team in the West, and this injury all but ruins the team’s season. Without their best player, they don’t have much of a chance to stay afloat until his potential comeback in February. It’s a shame when this happens to anyone, but it’s especially tough when it happens to a class act such as Brand. The league will miss his competitiveness and hustle this season.
The USC Trojans are the top ranked college football program according to the USA Today 25 coaches’ poll. Not much of a surprise there considering John David Booty is set to embark on his senior campaign and is highly regarded as one of the top quarterbacks in the nation.
LSU is ranked second, which isn’t a huge surprise considering the Tigers defense is going to be nasty again next year. Losing quarterback JaMarcus Russell and defensive leader LaRon Landry doesn’t help, however, so it wouldn’t be a total shock if LSU slips as the season wares on and they face stiffer opponents.
Out of the rest of the top five, (#3) Florida, (#4) Texas and (#5) Michigan, I think I’m most excited to see how the Long Horns will fare. Colt McCoy was something special last year as a freshman and if he can stay healthy, I believe he could potentially lead UT to a national title, whether it be this year or next. Of course, the defending champion Gators rarely get the respect they deserve and it’s evident once again with the way they’re ranked third in these preseason polls. The Wolverines are going to be tough too with Chad Henne, Jake Long and Michael Hart all returning to try and finish what they couldn’t last year when they lost to rival Ohio State in the regular season finale.

SPORTSbyBROOKS.com blogged an article that stated Yankees owner George Steinbrenner’s health is dramatically failing.
In an (unauthorized) brief visit with the turtlenecked-one, Lidz writes of Steinbrenner: “His body is bloated; his jawline has slackened into a triple chin; his skin looks as if a dry-cleaner bag has been stretched over it. Steinbrenner’s face, pale and swollen, has a curiously undefined look. His features seem frozen in a permanent rictus of careworn disbelief.”
It’s no secret Steinny’s health has been poor for a few years now, but it appears that it’s getting extremely serious. But the speculation of the Yankees being on sale is just that right now, speculation. However, eyebrows were raised after the YES Network – Steinbrenner’s cash cow cable association – was put up for sale. Speculation or not, Steinbrenner won’t be the Yankees owner forever, so the question is: will the next owner of the Yankees be as free-wheeling spending wise as Steinbrenner has been? Yankee fans love it, but the rest of baseball followers curse their ever continuous spending as much as they curse the ground Barry Bonds walks on. Can anyone envision Mark Cuban – who’s in the mix to be the next Cubs owner – taking over in the Bronx? Holy crap.
Starting pitcher Matt Morris had some choice words for his former team after the Giants traded him to the Pirates minutes before the trade deadline Thursday afternoon.
Morris said he was excited about returning to the National League Central and “getting some better defense and some young guys who are looking to play hard.”
He also insinuated the Giants’ organization accepted losing.
Better defense? The Giants and Pirates have the exact same .989 fielding percentage this year and how does it get any better than Omar Vizquel at short? Hey Matt, in your last 45.1 innings, you gave up 80 hits and 40 freaking earned runs – so don’t blame anybody but yourself. The Giants were ready and willing to trade you months ago when you were actually earning that ridiculous three-year, $27 million contract. If you wanted to be dealt to a contender, you shouldn’t have muffed up your last four starts. You deserve the Pirates.
