      Dunn sounds off (literally) on Vick

      All around great guy and underrated player Warrick Dunn sounded off about Michael Vick to the Atlanta Journal Constitution Tuesday. Although he was professional as always, one term he used especially stood out to me:

      “To me … he needs to worry about his life,” said Dunn, who keeps in regular contact with Vick. “As an ex-teammate, right now he definitely wants the guys on this football team to move on and move forward.”

      Ex-teammate? Wow. Even though it’s a foregone conclusion that Vick’s days in Atlanta are over, it’s interesting to hear a guy like Dunn – a teammate and friend of Vick’s since 2002 – say “ex-teammate” just a day after Vick announced he’s guilty. I marvel at the way Dunn is quickly moving on from the whole situation and putting the onus back on football. What else is there to do?

      Professionalism like this shown by Dunn is one of the reasons why I think the Falcons are actually going to rid themselves of Vick sooner than people think. Maybe not on the field of course, but certainly off it.

      Eli grows a pair

      As an analyst now for NBC’s Sunday Night Football, former Giants running back Tiki Barber ripped Eli Manning for the way he could never lead the Giants.

      Always one to back away from controversy, Eli actually spit venom back at Barber Tuesday after Giants practice:

      “…It’s one of those deals; I’m not going to lose any sleep (over) what Tiki has to say. I guess I could have questioned his leadership skills last year with calling out the coach and having articles about him retiring in the middle of the season and (how) he’s lost the heart. As a quarterback, you’re reading your running back has lost the heart to play the game and it’s about the 10th week…”

      Who told Manning he had a set between his legs? Seriously, fantastic work Eli! Although quite frankly, both Tiki and Eli are just in their comments – it’s just nice to see Manning fight back for once.

      Chris Brown to be the starter in Tenn?

      Titans’ running back coach Sherman Smith is set to name Chris Brown the starter in Tennessee, not LenDale White like the team initially hoped at the beginning of OTAs months ago.

      Brown is a quality back, but two things scare me as far as fantasy value goes. The first thing that would cause me to pass is how much the Titans were dying for White to be the starter this offseason. If and when White becomes healthy again, will he steal Brown’s carries or flat out take his starting job in general? Secondly, White has always been viewed as the goal line back, so I’d have to assume that role is still his. Obviously if that’s the case, Brown’s value decreases big time.

      I’d probably stay away from both of them on draft day, but the value of White in a touchdown-heavy league is still appealing. Plus, the Titans line is above average and should only get better while Michael Roos and Jacob Bell continue to develop.

      Larry Johnson signs extension

      Larry Johnson signed a six-year deal with the Chiefs and is expected to join his teammates at the team’s training camp in River Falls, WI sometime this week.

      Fantasy owners can comfortably take Johnson with the third pick overall, though in PPR leagues, Frank Gore, Joseph Addai, Brian Westbrook and Reggie Bush are still attractive options. Now that he’s in camp, LJ should project to 1400-1500 rushing yards and 12-14 TD, along with 40 receptions for 350 yards and a couple of scores.

      Team USA’s final cut

      Managing director Jerry Colangelo and head coach Mike Krzyzewski have made the final cuts to form the squad that will compete in the Olympic qualifying tournament that starts Wednesday.

      The U.S. roster includes: Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Amare Stoudemire, Dwight Howard, Jason Kidd, Chauncey Billups, [Michael] Redd, [Mike] Miller, Tyson Chandler, Tayshaun Prince and Deron Williams.

      Redd and Miller were added for their unquestioned ability to shoot from the perimeter. Over the past few tourneys, Team USA has been lacking in this area and it has cost them dearly. The team also wanted to add defensive toughness to the squad, which is why Chandler and Prince made the cut.

      Kevin Durant and Nick Collison were the last two cuts. Durant made a splash by scoring 22 points in a recent intrasquad scrimmage, but the team wanted to go with experience over youth. Durant will certainly appear in a Team USA uniform at some point in his career.

      It’s about time that Redd made the team. Year after year, we’ve watched Team USA clunk shot after shot from the perimeter as their opponent sits in a zone. The presence of Redd (and Miller) should hopefully open up the lane for LeBron and Kobe to penetrate. The team needs to be mindful of the fact that international officials don’t call the game the same way that NBA officials do. (No Tim Donaghy jokes, please.) In the World Championships last summer, there were several players looking for fouls as they attacked the rim, yet they weren’t getting the kind of favoritism that they saw in the NBA.

      It is critical that Team USA has a good showing in the 2008 Olympics, and that means winning the whole damn thing.
