      – According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Mets offered Carlos Gomez, Mike Pelfrey and others for Johan Santana. However, Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com writes that the Mets did not talk to the Twins about Santana.

      – The A’s are interested in Barry Bonds. Friday, Bonds pleaded not guilty to perjury and obstruction of justice charges.

      – The Yankees need a reliever and rumor has it that they’re willing to part with outfielder Hideki Matsui to land one. The Giants have an abundance of young pitching, but zero position players, so Jonathan Sanchez, Brad Hennessey and Kevin Correia’s names have been thrown out as possible trade bait for Matsui. Starter Noah Lowry’s name has also been linked to the Giants obtaining Matsui.

      – The Cubs are shopping Mark Prior and are also interested in Japanse outfielder Kosuke Fukudome. The Padres and White Sox are also interested in Fukudome.

      Michigan talking to Schiano

      December 7, 2007 /

      According to FOXSports.com, athletic director Bill Martin met with Rutgers’ head coach Greg Schiano to talk about the head coach vacancy at Michigan.

      Both papers cited unidentified sources saying the meeting took place Tuesday night in New York during the College Football Hall of Fame banquet at a midtown Manhattan hotel. Though Michigan has made no official offer to Schiano, both papers reported one could be coming soon.

      Schiano, a New Jersey native, has orchestrated one of the most impressive turnarounds in college football during his seven seasons at Rutgers. When he took over in Piscataway, N.J., the program was one of the worst in the Division I-A.

      The Scarlet Knights have had three straight winning seasons and will be making their third consecutive postseason appearance at the International Bowl against Ball State on Jan. 6. They went 7-5 this season, a disappointment after starting the season ranked No. 16 in the nation.

      Gasp! You mean Michigan is actually considering a head coach who isn’t a “Michigan man”? Wow, maybe the athletic department is starting to realize that there are decent candidates outside the “Great Lake State.” Schiano has done wonders at Rutgers and one would think that with more recruiting power, he could do the same at UM. Even if Schiano can’t be lured from Jersey, it appears that Michigan is going after a big name.

      Update: ESPN is now reporting Schiano is staying at Rutgers. Michigan is now 0-2 luring head coaches.

      Texas Rolls as Barnes Adapts

      Rick Barnes maybe the best coach at adapting to his talent and environment of any coach in the business. After losing Kevin Durant to the NBA many thought there would be a drop off. Starting 8-0 with a road win at UCLA is not looking like a step back. He has adjusted once again and created another formidable team…. I can remeber talking with him after practice during his first year at Providence. He had followed Rick Pitino and had enough smarts to know what his strengthes were and what the fans expected. He was expected to press like Pitino. However, his strength was in teaching man to man half court defense. So he adapted. Pressed for one pass and then fell back into a tough, in your face man to man defense. Therefore, he was able to combine both and put together another outstanding team and keep the fans happy.

      Now at Texas he has done that again.
