Jamison’s Cavs debut a dud

Check out this line from Antawn Jamison’s first game in a Cavs uni:

26 min, 0-12 FG, 0-4 3PT, 2-2 FT, 7 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl, 2 pts

Wow, that’s ugly. But it’s only one game and we all know Jamison is a better player than that.

The Cavs lost to the Bobcats, 110-93. Tyrus Thomas debuted for Charlotte. Here’s his line:

25 min, 3-9 FG, 3-4 FT, 12 reb, 2 ast, 6 blk, 9 pts

Now that’s more like it.

As luck would have it…Ludmila Privivkova

There are many things I hate about the 2010 Winter Olympics. I hate that, even though I live in the same time zone as Vancouver, I don’t have the option of seeing the marquee events live. I hate that, even though I resign myself to watching the preempted coverage, the events can go until midnight. I hate that the live coverage I do get on the USA Network, MSNBC, and CNBC is treated with little care, as commercials are thrown in willy and nilly and events are cut short by other programming. I hate that Brian Williams tells me to look away from the screen because NBC — the network that is counting on us from the West Coast to stick around — is going to show the results from events that happened earlier in the day.

The Olympics owed me one, and they came through. Because I could, I put on women’s curling on USA this morning. The United States was taking on Russia and I had no idea what was happening on my screen. Now, I expected hulks of women to fill the teams, but this was not the case. Both boasted rather attractive athletes, especially Russia. In my opinion, even though the U.S. took the match, the real winners were the men everywhere who got to witness Russia’s skip, Ludmila Privivkova, handle a stick. (Sorry.)

Report: White Sox pull offer for Damon

According to ESPN Chicago’s Bruce Levine, the White Sox have pulled their offer for Johnny Damon, leading many to believe that the Tigers are now the clear favorites to land the free agent outfielder.

“It became clear to us in our recent negotiations that the money that we were offering was not going to be good enough for Johnny at this time,” White Sox general manager Kenny Williams told ESPNChicago.com. “At this particular point, we feel it’s necessary to withdraw our offer.”

The White Sox made a $6 million offer for Damon, according to major league sources.

Asked if the White Sox would get back into the running for Damon at some point, Williams said: “As you can see by the way that we kept going after this situation, we are very much interested in the player. All I can say is that I reiterate at this time that this offer for now is off the table.”

Only in Scott Boras’ world is Johnny Damon worth $6 million. The White Sox made the right decision here by pulling the offer on the table and not getting into a potential bidding war with the Tigers over a 36-year-old player that can’t play the field and isn’t likely to hit 20-plus home runs (or even 15-plus home runs) outside of Yankee Stadium.

Boras and Damon should come to the realization that it’s either Detroit or come down on their demands.

Gay activists upset over commentators’ remarks about figure skaters

Network Nine Australia commentators Eddie McGuire and Mick Molloy have come under fire for comments they made about the Winter Olympics men’s figure skating competition.

From ABC.net:

While discussing the competitors’ costumes as part of last night’s Winter Olympics wrap, Molloy said: “They don’t leave anything in the locker room, these blokes, do they?”

McGuire replied: “They don’t leave anything in the closet either, do they?”

The long-time Channel Nine personality then described one competitor’s costume as “a bit of a brokeback”, referencing Ang Lee’s film about gay cowboys.

“A bit of Brokeback Mountain exercises – you can’t wear that,” Molloy responded.

Gay rights activist Gary Burns isn’t too pleased with the duo’s comments:

“They’re harmful to, particularly, gay youth who are living in isolated areas across the nation,” he said.

“These young kids look up to [McGuire] and when they hear these kinds of comments and [they’re] having issues with their own coming-out process, or low self-esteem or depression… they feel worthless.

“Channel Nine should sack both of them because they’re not fit to be broadcasters or to be involved in a television network when they use this kind of banter.”

Molloy is apparently an Australian comedian, so I’m not sure why he would be broadcasting a men’s figure skating competition in the first place. Quite frankly, I blame the television network for thinking that putting a comedian in that type of situation was a good idea.

But the kicker here is McGuire, who is a regular show host on Channel Nine, so he should have known better. How many media members need to get into trouble for making stupid comments on air before other members avoid situations like these entirely? It’s not a hard concept, just don’t say anything racial or homophobic on air and you should be fine. I mean, was he trying to impress Molloy with his horrible humor?

Considering there is a Facebook page dedicated to how McGuire is ruining the 2010 Winter Olympics coverage, maybe it’s time for Channel Nine to give this clown the boot.

Bill Simmons on Tiger’s statement

I have to hand it to Simmons. He turned this around pretty quickly. It’s a good read…

Say this much about Tiger: People give a crap. I don’t know anyone who didn’t watch this morning’s speech. There isn’t another athlete — not one — who could have made the world stop from 11 to 11:15 like Tiger Woods did.

And with that, we’re done with the positives. I thought it was a borderline train wreck. It amazes me that Tiger learned little to nothing from the past two months. The control freak whose life slipped out of control dipped right back into control-freak mode, reading a prepared speech in front of a hand-selected audience of people, taking no questions, talking in clichés and only occasionally seeming human. Everything about it seemed staged. Everything. When the main camera broke down at the nine-minute mark and Tiger had to be shown from the side, I half-expected to see that he was plugged in to the wall.

Whatever. I was going to leave it alone. After all, that had to have been a humiliating experience for the guy. But listening to talking heads praise that ludicrous speech pushed me over the edge. Someone actually said, “It came from the heart.” It did? Was it C3PO’s heart? I thought it seemed like an automated response from Microsoft’s new “Cheater’s Confession” program.

Let’s look at the facts. Tiger cheats on his wife relentlessly and brazenly. She find out somehow. This leads to him crashing his car in the wee hours of Thanksgiving night. Scandal. Cover-up. More women come out. And more. And more. Tiger disappears like Jimmy Hoffa. Elin stops wearing her ring. Tiger stays hidden. Rumors swirl. By hiding, by not saying anything, Tiger enables every rumor and negative story to gain steam. When he sneaks away to a sex rehab clinic for 45 days, neither Tiger or his representatives acknowledges rumors that he’s there. He emerges with a staged jogging photo op; one day later, three other photos of Tiger hitting golf balls, even seeming jovial in one of them, hit the wires. And then, today’s prepared remarks. That came from the heart. Just as long as you didn’t ask a follow-up question.
