Player X discusses NBA groupies

ESPN The Magazine has been running an interesting feature where an unnamed professional athlete writes candidly about his sport. It started with the NFL and now they’re featuring an unnamed NBA player. Here is what he had to say about NBA groupies (Insider subscription required):

Not that long ago, The Mag’s NFL Player X (whoever he is) estimated that 30 percent of married NFL players cheat on their wives. I was surprised to hear it was that low. In the NBA, I think it’s closer to 60 percent.

Trades have been arranged because one woman is involved with two guys on the same team. That’s what happened in Dallas some years ago. And right now I know of one girl who is dating two NBA players. One makes her car payments, and the other pays her rent. They don’t know about each other, but they do share a money manager who’s writing both checks. It’s bound to blow up at some point.

As for the married guys, it’s not that hard for a groupie to get with one of them, either. They’re like regular dudes in corporate America who travel a lot, except they have more money and more opportunities to cheat. They don’t get caught because they keep it on the road, calling their wives all the time to check in.

In fact, I would guess that 50 percent of NBA wives actually started out as groupies. And a lot of those women are realistic about the scene their spouses are in. They take a “don’t ask, don’t tell” approach. They will say something like, “Don’t embarrass me by getting caught.” It’s not that they like the situation, but they understand the circumstances. After all, it wasn’t that long ago that they were in those same clubs looking to get with a professional athlete, no matter how many tries it took.

The player goes on to wonder why players get married at all, and uses Derek Jeter as example of a player who can pretty much do whatever he wants because he’s single. It’s surprising that more players don’t go that route, though I’d guess that it can be tough to extricate yourself from a relationship that started before you hit the big time.

Lindsey Vonn wins gold in downhill

Despite battling an injured right shin, American Lindsey Vonn took home the gold medal in women’s Olympic downhill on Wednesday. Downhill is the first of five races that Vonn plans to compete in during the Winter Games.

From Yahoo! Sports:

Vonn was hurt Feb. 2 during pre-Olympic practice in Austria and had hardly skied over the past two weeks.

Still, as the two-time defending overall World Cup champion and the winner of five of the six downhills this season, she was an overwhelming favorite.

Vonn increased her lead at the first three checkpoints, although she lost nearly two tenths on the bottom after getting knocked off balance as she went over a small bump just before the finish.

What’s remarkable about Vonn’s performance is not only was she injured, but due to bad whether in Whistler of the past week she and the other competitors also only received one downhill training session, which was before the race. Plus, the course was extremely bumpy so for her to still win a gold medal despite having to overcome several obstacles is impressive.

Danica Patrick crashes in her NASCAR debut

Making her NASCAR debut on Saturday in the Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway, Danica Patrick ran outside of the top 20 for most of the event and then participated in a 12-car wreck to cap off a stellar day of racing.

From ESPN.com:

Patrick was hoping to learn as much as she could about a new style of racing. She ended up going to the school of hard knocks.

“It’s important to have realistic expectations,” Patrick said. “There’s going to be spikes in performance, I don’t doubt that. But there’s also going to be tough days. And today, I would say, was more of a tough day.”

After she finished sixth in last week’s ARCA event at Daytona, many people were encouraged about her debut. Obviously things didn’t go the way Patrick had hoped, but it’s only the first race of the season. She arguably has more pressure on her as well, given all the media attention she conjures up.

Natalie Gulbis gets signature shoe, gives me a reason to post about her

Natalie Gulbis has teamed with Adidas to create her signature shoe. I think the shoe is designed to help one on the golf course because I believe she’s a golfer. Check, she is a golfer. It’s just difficult to think about facts while looking at her.

I’ve included more pics after the jump as well since I’m such a nice guy.

(Thanks to SPORTSbyBROOKS for the tip.)
