Highlights from the Wednesday that was

NBA Playoffs Game 5: Celtics 106, Pistons 103

John Paulsen has the scoop on this game, but here’s what angry Sheed had to say about the refs:

NHL Stanley Cup Game 3: Penguins 3, Red Wings 2

Welcome to the NHL Stanley Cup Finals, Penguins.

MLB Musings:

Cubs 2, Dodgers 1. Outside of the Phillies, is there any club playing better than the Cubs right now? And although he’s a circus act in left field, is there any player hotter at the plate than Alfonso Soriano?

Giants 11, Diamondbacks 3. What is going on with the D-Backs? They’ve lost three in a row, are 3-7 in their last 10, and are on the verge of being swept by the Giants. They can’t lose to Barry Zito on Thursday can they? No, no way.

Mariners 1, Red Sox 0. Erik Bedard finally arrived in Seattle (7.0 IP, 2 hits, 0 ER, 8 K’s). Holding Boston’s lineup to only two hits is damn impressive.

Phillies 6, Rockies 1. Chase Utley is a man-child. He’s got 17 home runs on the year and it’s only May 29.

Kids go crazy for Kiprusoff

Larry Brown Sports downloads a gem from YouTube of a kid who is completely infatuated with Calgary Flames’ goalie Mikka Kiprusoff. Like, completely infatuated.

Can you imagine when this kid is 50 and living in his parents’ basement still? Mikka Kiprusoff (long retired) jerseys, posters and pictures cover the walls and the now adult is still in full goalie equipment, rocking back and forth and every now and again shouting, “Mikka!” for no reason. By then he should have a restraining order or two out and all he does with his time is watch old Kiprusoff save highlights. Oh man, what a site.

What exactly did the lockout accomplish again?

I know we at the Scores Report don’t do a ton of puck-talk (or any at all for that matter), but I had to chuckle when I saw that the New York Rangers doled out $4.25 million to retain goalie Henrik Lundqvist.

Just like baseball, hockey has always been about teams that spend, and teams that don’t. Teams like the Rangers and Red Wings would go out and spend butt loads of money for free agents every offseason, while organizations like the Penguins, Oilers and Lightening tucked away their cash like parents saving for a child’s college fund. Part of the reason for the 2005 lockout was so that a salary cap could be put into place and it could even out the spending.

Well, here we are just two offseasons later, and in efforts to save space – there are still teams that spend, and teams that don’t. The Lundqvist deal – although well deserved for Henrik – proves what I’m talking about. I would love to see a cap in MLB, but something tells me the Yankees and Red Sox would still push the spending, while the Pirates, Marlins and Devil Rays sit on their ass and do nothing.

Couch Potato Alert (10/2)

MLB playoffs start this week, which means there will be a ton of games on ESPN and Fox. Brett Favre and the Packers visit the Eagles Monday night, which is the site of the “4th and 26” debacle that sent the entire Green Bay franchise into a tailspin in 2004. Hockey also starts this week – check your local listings.
