Playoff Preview: Wildcard Weekend

REDSKINS @ BUCS

These two teams are very similar. Both have good defenses, strong running games, diminutive yet explosive #1 WRs and quarterbacks that are asked to manage the game. The Tampa Bay defense is slightly better against the run (3.5 ypc vs. the Redskins’ 3.9) and against the pass (183 yards per game vs. the Redskins’ 193). Otherwise, Clinton Portis isn’t much better than Cadillac Williams while Santana Moss and Joey Galloway are pretty much a wash. I think the game will come down to the play of the young Bucs QB, Chris Simms. If he plays well enough on third down, the Bucs will have the edge and home field advantage should carry them to a win.

JAGS @ PATS

They’re baaaack. A lot of pundits wrote off the defending champs when they lost their whole defensive backfield to injuries. They still aren’t good against the pass (231 yards a game with 25 pass TDs allowed), but the Pats’ front seven are back, assuming Teddy Bruschi can play through a calf injury – he’s currently listed as questionable. If he doesn’t play, Jacksonville’s chances of winning go up dramatically. The Jaguars are a very solid team, with a good defense, a good running game and an efficient passing game. Byron Leftwich may return to the starting lineup, but if he doesn’t, David Garrard has proven he can get the team wins. I think the key is the Pats defense. If they can put up a fight on the ground and (especially) through the air, then New England has the advantage.

PANTHERS @ GIANTS

This one might be a shootout. The Giants D is banged up while their offense, when healthy, can put up some serious points. It all depends on how conservative each team is offensively. Carolina QB Jake Delhomme and WR Steve Smith shouldn’t have any problem carving up a Giants defense that is 6th worst against the pass. The Giants are also without MLB Antonio Pierce; the last time they played a good team (WAS in Week 16), they gave up 156 yards on the ground. With all due respect to the Steelers, I think the Panthers are the road team that has the best chance to win this weekend.

STEELERS @ CINCINNATI

This game will be decided when the Bengals have the ball. If they can move the ball consistently and score against a very good Pittsburgh defense, they should win the game. This is one of those games where everything points to a Steeler win, but for some reason I think the Bengals will be victorious. I know, I know, defense wins championships, but I’m having visions of big games from Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh and the Cincinnati passing game.

Alexander beats out Manning for MVP

The numbers were in his favor, but I still didn’t think Shaun Alexander would win the MVP over Peyton Manning. Guess I was wrong.

Looking back, it was probably kind of foolish to doubt Alexander’s chances. The Seahawks classed the NFC at 13-3 while Alexander broke the single-season TD record with 28 and led the NFL in rushing. Sounds like an MVP to me. Sure, Peyton was great and the Colts made a legitimate run at undefeated history, but he only tossed 28 touchdowns, 21 fewer than last year, and six QBs threw for more yards, including Kerry Collins. Granted, he’s not going to throw 49 TDs a year, but Manning didn’t set himself apart in any one category. Alexander did it in two.

Now, if Seattle had only won nine or 10 games, then Peyton would’ve been the better choice. And please don’t say Matt Hasselbeck’s career season (3,459 yards, 24 TD) made it easier for Alexander to shine; it’s the other way around. Everyone played the run against Seattle, which opened things up for Hasselbeck, and yet Alexander still blew up. Besides, don’t forget that Peyton had Edgerrin James (1,506 yards, 13 TD) in his backfield.

All of that said, there certainly is a strong case to be made for Manning and even Tom Brady, who finished third in the voting. But Alexander’s record-setting performance during a dominant team season makes him the logical choice. At least, I would’ve voted that way.

Can you survive?

The Ultimate Survival Pool is back for the playoffs! For each round during the NFL playoffs, you pick one winner against the spread. But unlike the regular season contest, you can pick the same team more than once — you can pick the same team every week, if you want. Just win, baby! Because there are just seven rounds (two for the wild cards, Saturday and Sunday, two for the divisional games, Saturday and Sunday, a round for each conference championship, and then the Super Bowl round), they are limiting the contest to 250 people (subject to increase) to increase the likelihood of a single winner. Enter today! The week-one deadline is Saturday, January 7 at 4:00 EST.

The axe continues to fall

There are now eight vacant head coaching positions in the NFL – Green Bay, Oakland, Minnesota, Houston, St. Louis, New Orleans, Detroit and Kansas City. Of that group, only the KC opening was voluntary as Dick Vermeil decided to retire. It appears that there are going to be more openings than there are big-name candidates, so more than a few fans are going to be left scratching their heads when the positions are finally filled.

ESPN’s John Clayton says that the Houston job is the most attractive – coming off a two-win season, there is nowhere to go but up and the team has some talented skill position players in David Carr, Andre Johnson, Domanick Davis, along with dibs on Reggie Bush if they so choose.

Week 16 Preview

Every week, I submit six names our fantasy football owners – three marginal players to start and three to bench. Let’s see how I did last week:

START

David Garrard, JAX – 216 passing yards, 27 rushing yards, 1 rushing TD (HIT)

Ryan Moats, PHI – 78 rushing yards, 1 TD (HIT)

Jimmy Smith, JAX – 6 receptions, 70 yards (PUSH)

BENCH

Mike Vick, ATL – 122 passing yards, 2 INT, 35 rushing yards (HIT)

Willis McGahee, BUF – 50 total yards, 1 TD (MISS)

Mushin Muhammad, CHI– 3 catches, 40 yards (HIT)

On to this week’s picks:

START

QB – Steve McNair, TEN
McNair’s matchup against a suspect MIA secondary is a good one.

RB – Carnell Williams, TB
Cadillac has a pretty good matchup against a Falcons rush defense that is not playing too well.

WR – Samie Parker, KC
Parker may still be available on your waiver wire if you need help. He’s been playing well lately and the KC/SD game should be a high scoring affair.

BENCH

QB – Brett Favre, CHI
Favre faces a very tough Bears defense on the frozen tundra in Green Bay.

RB – Edgerrin James, IND
HC Tony Dungy has said he’ll be treating this game as a preseason affair, so don’t expect to see any major Colts out there for more than a half.

WR – Deion Branch, NE
Beware of Pats this week, as the team has nothing to play for. Plus, Branch faces a good Jets pass defense.
