Alexander to miss two more weeks

On the heels of a nice victory at St. Louis, Mike Holmgren announced that the team’s star running back, Shaun Alexander, will miss at least two more weeks. The team wants to allow the foot to completely heal so that he doesn’t re-injure it and need to have surgery.

Fantasy Impact: While it’s a smart move for the Seahawks, the news isn’t good for fantasy owners who are probably scrambling to fill their RB spots with the normally tough Alexander out of their lineup. Maurice Morris will continue to fill in, but he hasn’t been able to produce #1 RB numbers thus far. Of course, neither did Shaun before he got hurt. Maybe the team’s running game is feeling the loss of Steve Hutchinson.

Weekend Wrap: NFL Sunday Night Game

Boy, Denver is a really fun team too watch, huh? On Monday night the Broncos beat the Ravens 13-3 in front of a national audience and then come back six days later and beat a winless Oakland squad 13-3.

Does anybody get the feeling that the Broncos aren’t all that they’re cracked up to be? Excellent defense (they’ve only given up one touchdown so far this year), but I get the feeling that the offense is going to fold against better opponents once teams start to find a little wiggle room against the D. Nevertheless, wins are wins and Denver needs victories to keep up with San Diego in the AFC West.

I’m going to stay tuned on whether or not this team is Super Bowl-worthy, however.

Most impressed with: Even though it was the Raiders, the Broncos defense looks fantastic after five games. They fly to the football, can stop the run and Champ Bailey has my vote for the best overall cornerback in the league. He made a tremendous play on Monday Night in the end zone to stop a potential Baltimore scoring drive. And then made an outstanding diving interception on the sidelines against the Raiders while keeping two fit inbounds to halt yet another scoring drive. He also plays the run extremely well and can cover any wide out in the league man to man.

Least impressed with: Denver’s inability to blow this game wide open in the second half. Like Al Michael’s said: “You never get the feeling that the Broncos are on the verge of losing tonight, but yet here we are and the Raiders are still only two scores down and threatening.” Couldn’t have said it better myself on how the game played itself out. That’s what leads me to believe that Denver isn’t still a top tier team quite yet, but better than average, nonetheless.

Fantasy Football: The Postgame, Week 6

Week 6 is pretty much in the books and several wideouts put up huge numbers on Sunday. T.O. scored a hat trick, but his performance was trumped by a class act in St. Louis. LT2 ran roughshod over the 49ers, while Rudi and the Houston QB blew great matchups. But enough with the tease, let’s get to the Week 6 Headliners and Flatliners.

HEADLINERS

Marc Bulger (360 yards, 3 TD, 1 INT)
The Seattle/St.Louis game was a shootout, so it’s no surprise that the two QBs in that game top the Headliners list. Bulger threw like he was still playing in a Mike Martz offense, but benefited from a great game (and a spectacular catch) from the WR Headliner.

Honorable Mention: Matt Hasselbeck (268 yards, 3 TD), Philip Rivers (334 yards, 2 TD), Jake Delhomme (365 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT), Drew Brees (275 yards, 3 TD, 2 INT), Kyle Boller (226 yards, 3 TD, 1 INT)

LaDainian Tomlinson (28 touches, 135 yards, 4 TD)
Tomlinson went apeshit on the 49ers, scoring three times before halftime. Luckily for his owners, the Chargers still played him quite a bit in the second half, and he was able to snag a few passes and score a fourth time. This was the first time in his career that he scored four TDs in a game.

Honorable Mention: Travis Henry (34 touches, 181 yards, 1 TD), Tiki Barber (29 touches, 227 yards), Willie Parker (22 touches, 98 yards, 2 TD), Kevin Jones (29 touches, 163 yards, 1 TD), Warrick Dunn (14 touches, 146 yards, 1 TD), Clinton Portis (19 touches, 75 yards, 2 TD), Ronnie Brown (22 touches, 127 yards, 1 TD)

Torry Holt (8 rec, 154 yards, 3 TD)
There were a lot of strong games turned in by wide receivers today, but none better than Torry Holt. He made a beautiful adjustment on a tipped ball to score his third TD of the day. Right now, he is the hottest fantasy WR in the game. On a side note, do you think Terrell Owens was disappointed to see that five other receivers scored multiple touchdown? He’s just happy to get the win, right?

Honorable Mention: Steve Smith (8 rec, 189 yards, 1 TD), Reggie Brown (6 rec, 121 yards, 1 rec TD, 1 rush, 15 yards, 1 rush TD), Joe Horn (6 rec, 110 yards, 2 TD), Laveranues Coles (5 rec, 106 yards, 2 TD), Mark Clayton (5 rec, 101 yards, 2 TD), Terrell Owens (5 rec, 45 yards, 3 TD), Roy Williams (10 rec, 161 yards, 1 TD), Deion Branch (6 rec, 76 yards, 2 TD), T.J. Houshmandzadeh (10 rec, 102 yards, 1 TD)

Jeremy Shockey (6 rec, 55 yards, 2 TD)
Shockey had his best game of the year against a pretty good Atlanta pass defense. Even more impressive, he finished the game without aggravating his ankle injury. I grow weary of watching him limp around on the field. I get it, you’re a tough guy for playing through the pain. Let’s move on.

Honorable Mention: Antonio Gates (5 rec, 78 yards, 1 TD), Todd Heap (5 rec, 55 yards, 1 TD), L.J. Smith (4 rec, 48 yards, 1 TD), Chris Cooley (2 rec, 27 yards, 1 TD)

FLATLINERS

David Carr (128 pass yards, 2 INT)
Carr squandered a great matchup against a Cowboys secondary that has been playing some suspect football of late. What’s worse, his team was behind the whole game, but he could still only muster 128 pass yards. He looked like the David Carr of old.

Dishonorable Mention: Damon Huard (162 yards, 1 INT)

Rudi Johnson (17 touches, 52 yards)
After a red-hot start, Rudi has cooled off considerably in the last three weeks, rushing for a total of 164 yards and one score in the last three games. Cincinnati is supposed to have the best offensive line in the league, so their inability to run on the Bucs Sunday is a complete mystery. Coming into the game, Tampa Bay had allowed an average of 163 yards on the ground, so RJ’s performance is a big disappointment.

Dishonorable Mention: Jamal Lewis (12 touches, 50 yards), Ron Dayne (11 touches, 18 yards), Reggie Bush (15 touches, 60 yards), DeShaun Foster (28 touches, 70 yards), Willis McGahee (19 touches, 80 yards)

Derrick Mason (0 rec, 0 yards)
Oddly enough, I benched the next guy on this list for Mason in one league and neither guy did diddly-squat. Mason was targeted on that crazy Kyle Boller pass that was deflected into the air before falling into Mark Clayton’s hands. Mason is definitely a better play with Steve McNair under center.

Dishonorable Mention: Jerricho Cotchery (1 rec, 6 yards), Plaxico Burress (4 rec, 44 yards), Keyshawn Johnson (5 rec, 46 yards)

Tony Gonzalez (3 rec, 15 yards)
After a great game in Week 1, Gonzo has been pretty quiet, catching only 11 passes for 106 yards over the next four games. Something stinks in KC, and Gonzo’s production is probably a symptom, not the cause. Regardless, he’s on pace to have his worst year since his rookie season.

Dishonorable Mention: Jason Witten (3 rec, 17 yards)

Weekend Wrap: Late action in the NFL

Here was your best late game in the NFL:

Jets 20, Dolphins 17
I guess this contest wins by a matter of default with the other two late games being blowouts. After being finding itself in a 20-3 hole early in the fourth quarter, Miami fought all the way back to make it a three-point game with under a minute to play. A 50-yard field goal attempt by Olindo Mare fell just short, however, and New York hung on for the victory.

Most impressed with: WR Laveranues Coles had a great game with five catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns. It’s amazing how QB Chad Pennington can continue to find Coles open on so many plays with no real threat on the other side. Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown finally had a breakout day in rushing 22 times for 127 yards and one touchdown. The biggest thing about Brown’s day was the 5.8 yards he averaged per carry.

Least impressed with: Eric Mangini should settle on one running back and right now, the hot hand is Leon Washington. Washington only carried the ball 11 times in this contest, but managed 5.3 yards per attempt and should get the bulk of the carries. Mangini has to find a running game if his team is going to be serious contenders with the Patriots in the AFC East.

Quick Shots:
Okay, who pissed off Pittsburgh? A few days ago Ben Roethlisberger said this team was starting over and the Steelers certainly stuck with that plan Sunday, trouncing the Chiefs 45-7. Roethlisberger was outstanding in going 16 for 19 for 238 yards and two touchdowns. More important than numbers, however, was the way he stood in the pocket like he’s done for the past two seasons and didn’t dive out of plays. He also didn’t throw any interceptions, which has plagued him so far this season. With Cincinnati and Baltimore both falling Sunday, Pittsburgh is starting its climb back up the AFC North totem pole. Nice day by RB Willie Parker (21 carries for 109 yards and two scores) too…Okay, who pissed off San Diego? Nobody? Oh, I guess they’ve played this well all season, huh? The Chargers embarrassed the 49ers 48-19 in a fantasy dream day by RB LaDainian Tomlinson. Four touchdowns on just 71 yards rushing for Tomlinson as San Diego improved to 4-1 on the season. QB Philip Rivers was excellent as well in going 29 of 39 for 334 yards and two touchdowns. Tough day for San Francisco defense – the Niners D gave up a total of 421 yards…

Weekend Wrap: Early Action in the NFL

The best of the best from the early NFL games:

Seahawks 30, Rams 28
These two teams always play each other hard don’t they? Seattle gets a last second FG by Josh Brown to put the nail in a topsy-turvy contest. The Seahawks take sole ownership in the NFC West, but St. Louis proved today that their 4-2 mark isn’t by fluke.

Most impressed with: The two star receivers on both squads. Deion Branch caught six passes for 76 yards and two scores while Torry Holt hauled in eight catches for 154 yards and three touchdowns. While Branch will get more headlines because of the win, Holt continues to outperform most receivers on Sundays and gets less and less exposure.

Least impressed with: Nobody in this game should be ridiculed, but I guess Steven Jackson (20 carries, 56 yards, one TD) getting out rushed by Maurice Morris (23 carries, 74 yards) isn’t too impressive on Jackson’s part. However, Seattle’s run defense is among the best in the league, so Jackson’s low rush total isn’t a total shocker.

Saints 27, Eagles 24
It’s time to stop biting a lip when saying how good New Orleans is. After beating Philly 27-24 on a last second FG by John Carney, the Saints are among the leagues best. The Saints are in first in their division by two games now, play extremely motivated at home and are overachieving on both sides of the ball. New Orleans is a very solid football team and should be recognized after staving off several Eagles comebacks throughout the game.

Most impressed with: Drew Brees are brought security to the quarterback position in New Orleans. He did throw two picks to keep Philadelphia close in this game, but was otherwise marvelous in going 27 of 37 for 275 yards and two scores.

Least impressed with: I’ve said it for a few weeks now about how the Eagles don’t look the same on defense as they did in going to all of those NFC Championship games earlier this decade. They allowed 372 yards of total offense and are allowing opponents to score on a regular basis in the red zone.

Quick Shots:
The Giants look strong again after Tiki Barber (26 carries for 185 yards) pounded a once stout Falcons’ run defense. New York sacked Michael Vick about 42 times in its 27-14 win and are now right back in the NFC East chase…After a painfully slow start against Houston, the Cowboys abused the Texans 34-6 as Terrell Owens scored three times. Now shut up T.O…What a weekend for the city of Detroit. First its Tigers clinched a World Series appearance on Saturday and then on Sunday the Lions somehow found a way to hang on to a 20-17 victory over Buffalo. It was Detroit’s first win of the season…The Ravens defense got beat up like a piñata by QB Jake Delhome in the Panthers 23-20 victory in Baltimore. Delhomme threw for 365 yards and two scores as Carolina is now back from the dead and Baltimore is back to reality…Congratulations to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for winning its first game of the season. The Bucs beat the Bengals 14-13 on a last minute Bruce Gradkowski pass to Michael Clayton. The Bengals have now lost back-to-back games after starting the season 3-0…Another team that notched its first victory of the season was the Tennessee Titans. Rookie QB Vince Young (13 of 25 for 161 yards and a TD) wasn’t overly impressive in the Titans 25-22 victory over the Redskins, but he didn’t throw any picks and kept the offense moving the entire contest. What a crushing blow for Washington to lose against a winless team on its home turf. Yikes…
