Weekend Wrap: Early Action in the NFL

Observations from the early games:

-Drew Brees continued his M.V.P surge in a 31-13 victory over the hapless Falcons. Brees threw for 349 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. Of course, if Brees was throwing against a real NFL secondary, I could give him more credit. Atlanta is terrible. It’s like shooting fish in a barrel against that team. Jim Mora and company should be issued out of Atlanta in the offseason. Mora rarely has his team ready to play and his coordinators’ game plans are an absolute joke. Mora’s father has called Michael Vick a “coach killer”. Well, let me be the first to call Mora and Greg Knapp a “Vick Killer” and the Falcons are lucky that Vick makes enough plays to keep everybody employed in Atlanta.

– What a funny team the Carolina Panthers are. Just when you want to crown them “back”, they choke something mightily against a less-superior team. Sunday it was the three-win Redskins that knocked off the Panthers 17-13. Memo to Jake Delhomme, it’s not always your offensive line, coaches or receivers fault. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Delhomme is nothing without Steve Smith. Congratulations to Jason Campbell, who won his first NFL game as a starter. Campbell didn’t have a huge impact, but he did more than Mark Brunell ever did this season. It’s a shame that Joe Gibbs sat on this kid for so long.

– It’s ironic how the Panthers and Jaguars came into the league together, because they’re like the same team. Just when you’re ready to crown them a good football team, the Jags blow a chance to prove you right. Jacksonville lost to the suddenly hot Buffalo Bills 27-24. J.P. Losman went 21 of 28 for 169 yards and a pick, but led a late charge to secure a win. Jacksonville’s defense, which has been good, better stop its yo-yo performances week to week if this team is going to go anywhere.

I think the Steelers played in Baltimore Sunday. I say, “think” because I’m not entirely sure given that 30-0 score the Ravens hung on Pittsburgh. Welcome back to earth Ben Roethlisberger

– See above for the Bengals 30-0 victory over the Browns. Who pissed off Chad Johnson the past two weeks?

– Chad Pennington wanted to end his recent slump against the Texans this Sunday and I think he did that in the Jets 26-11 victory. Pennington was 24 of 31 for 286 yards and a touchdown. Pennington did all of that while getting just 27 yards from the rushing department.

– Minnesota hung on to a 31-26 victory…over Arizona. Not that this is college football and you have to blow everybody out, but no Dennis Green-led team should every come within six points of a somewhat decent squad. What a massive day for the quarterbacks in this game. Rookie Matt Leinart passed for over 400 yards and Brad “Elbow Pads” Johnson threw for three touchdowns. Chester Taylor had a good game as well in rushing for 136 yards and a score.

I’ve got to hand it to the 49ers. Unlike some other teams in the NFL, San Fran gives it all it has for four quarters. The Rams topped the Niners 20-17, but there is nothing to suggest that this team isn’t a playoff team in the near future. The defense has played better and the offense is young and explosive. Frank Gore had another great week in rushing for 134 yards and a touchdown while Steven Jackson rushed for 121 yards and a score. Jackson also had nine receptions for 71 yards.

Fantasy Football: Saturday Update (11/25)

Ronnie Brown had surgery on his hand and may miss several weeks. He’s out for this week and then will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis…Todd Heap missed some practice time this week but is expected to play against the Steelers…Brett Favre is listed as questionable, but returned to practice and should start Monday night against the Seahawks…Santana Moss was upgraded to probable and should play Sunday…Marques Colston missed practice on Friday and it looks like he will be a game time decision on Sunday. If he can’t go, the expectations for Devery Henderson and Terrance Copper go way up…Andre Johnson returned to practice Friday and should be able to go on Sunday…Hines Ward missed parts of practice this week and is listed as questionable. Keep an eye on the Sunday inactives before starting him this week…Matt Hasselbeck will start Monday night against the Packers…Ernest Wilford returned to practice and should play against the Bills…Willis McGahee practiced on Friday and is likely to play this week. It’s not clear how the Bills intend to split up snaps between McGahee and Anthony Thomas, who has performed well in McGahee’s absence.

Couch Potato Alert (11/24)

There are two huge college football games this weekend. Later today, LSU squares off with Arkansas in a game that has national championship implications, while the Notre Dame/USC clash on Saturday (the BE College Game of the Week) is a must-win for both teams if they have any hope of playing OSU in the Fiesta Bowl. In the BE NFL Game of the Week, Chicago and New England square off in a possible Super Bowl preview. In college hoops, be sure to catch the #12 Jayhawks as they face #1 Florida in Las Vegas.

Thanksgiving Day Action in the NFL

The theme for Turkey Day in the NFL yesterday had to be the play of the quarterbacks. Joey Harrington goes back into Detroit, where he was tormented, abused and damn near made fun of, and throws for 213 yards and three touchdowns in a 27-10 thumping of the Lions. Nobody outside of Detroit, or non-Lions fan for that matter, can understand the magnitude of Harrington walking into Ford Field and burning his former team. This guy served as an absolute whipping post for Lion players and fans for four years. Revenge is best served cold, I think.

Tony Romo, a.k.a. Greatest Quarterback in ESPN Land, had an unbelievable game against the Bucs, tossing five touchdowns and 306 yards in Dallas’ 38-10 victory. I know it was only Tampa, but Romo continues to look calm, cool and best of all for Bill Parcels, like he completely knows what he’s doing. Terrell Owens had a nice game in Dallas (eight receptions for 107 yards and one TD) as well. Of course he also dropped three passes in the first half, including a touchdown where he acted like he was hurt on the play. Please.

Now for the overcooked, dried out and overall bad tasting turkey that is Jake Plummer. Mike Shanahan, in my opinion, now has nine days to get Jay Cutler ready for Seattle. Once again, if you look at Plummer’s stats (25 of 39 for 216 yards, one TD, one INT) in the 19-10 loss to the Chiefs, they’re not that bad. However, you watch this guy and he seems like he’s one play away from mucking everything up. At 7-4 in the NFC, the Broncos damn near clinch home field advantage. At 7-4 in the AFC, however, it’s time to firm up your team for the stretch run. Switching gears, the job that Herman Edwards has done in Kansas City is remarkable. Consider for a second who he has lost since arriving in KC: All-Pro tackle Willie Roaf in the offseason, quarterback Trent Green for virtually the entire season and Pro Bowl tight end Tony Gonzalez. Yet, Edwards has the Chiefs at 7-4 and right in the thick of things in the division. Great job.

NFL Game of the Week: Chicago Bears at New England Patriots

In honor of the 2006 NFL season, Bullz-Eye.com will take one contest off the schedule every week and break down each team’s strengths and weaknesses vs. its opponent. Plus, no preview would be complete without a forecasted score – you’ll find a prediction on the game at Bullz-Eye.com as well.

The most compelling game this week pits quarterback Tom Brady vs. the Chicago Bears defense. Will the Patriots struggles at home continue or will Bill Belichick find a way to beat Brian Urlacher and the stout Bear defense?

On tap for Week 4: Bears (9-1) at Patriots (7-3).
