NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is debating whether or not to allow cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones to workout at Titans’ training camp later this month. A decision should be announced by the end of the week.

The commissioner apparently will weigh at least two elements before making a ruling. One involves whether Jones violated terms of his suspension when he was identified by Atlanta police as being part of a group that was involved in a shooting outside a strip club on June 18. Jones is not a suspect in the shooting.

This may sound ridiculous for Goodell to even consider, I mean, Pacman was suspended for the entire season, so why should he have the right to workout with the team, right? Wrong. If he’s in practice it means he’s spending more time doing something productive for once instead out at a club “making it rain” and punching strippers. I’m all for the idea of keeping this a-hole off the streets as much as humanly possible.

The Detroit Lions re-signed franchise defensive tackle Cory Redding to a seven-year, $49 million contract on Monday. The deal also includes $16 million in guaranteed money and makes Redding the highest paid defensive tackle in the NFL.

Redding is coming off a fantastic season with eight sacks, but the way the league is set up right now regarding free agent contracts is absolutely nuts.

Somewhere Tommie Harris has a huge smile on his face. The Bears want to extend Harris’ contract before the regular season kicks off, but if Redding’s deal is any indication, they’ll have to pony up big.

The Colts signed defensive end Dwight Freeney to a six year, $72 million contract with a $30 million signing bonus on Friday. The deal makes him the highest paid defender in the history of NFL.

Upon seeing these figures, the first reaction for most people is probably, “The highest paid defender in the league? Freeney’s not the best player in the league!” True, but that’s just the way the market is set up right now, so get used to it.

Personally, I love Freeney. He’s damned near impossible to halt one on one and at only 27, he’s just hitting his prime. He would have commanded even more on the open market seeing as how he’s registered 10-plus sacks every year except 2006 (he finished with six). Plus, he’s a great locker room guy, which is saying a lot taking into account all the hooligans the NFL is producing these days. However, it’s well known teams can pound the ball to his side and do so with a great deal of success. Even in Indy’s impressive defensive performance against the Chiefs and Larry Johnson, Freeney was getting blown off the line and didn’t fair well against double teams. He’s a bit one-dimensional for $72 mil, but once again, the market is set up for free agents and the Colts were extremely smart to pony up for him considering most teams are dying for a sack artist like Freeney.

Somewhat surprisingly, Michael Vick was not named in documents filed by investigators looking into the QB’s involvement in an alleged dogfighting ring. So now what? In my latest column for Bullz-Eye.com, I provide a wake-up call for Vick’s apologists, his critics and, more importantly, the media.

And yes, those of you experiencing a little déjà vu, I did to a blog about this a week ago. However, I go into more detail in the column and hey, who doesn’t like a little more detail right? I mean, there are people all over the world dying for more detail, and here I am handing it out for free.

Rams quarterback Marc Bulger recently hinted to Sirius NFL Radio that he would holdout if he doesn’t receive a new contract by training camp. He told the St. Louis Dispatch that his comments were blown out of proportion, however, and that he’d like to stay a Ram.

“I’d love to finish my career here,” he said. “I know everyone says that, but being seven years in one place, I know I’m fortunate and I’ve had a blast here. . . . Hopefully we can get something done so I can finish (here) and we can win a couple of Super Bowls.”

It’s very likely the team gets a deal done with Bulger, considering the options the Rams have at quarterback on their roster, as well as what’s available on the free agent market (i.e. Aaron Brooks).
